***Official*** Washington Redskins 2014 Offseason Thread (1 Viewer)

Press conference at 4pm. Can't wait to hear all the "I'm here to restore the franchise" and references to Redskins history and our "proud franchise". that we've heard from the last 3-4 coaches. I'm sure we could come up with some catch phrases and make a good drinking game out of it. Nothing against Gruden, but as Skins fans, we've all heard this optimism too much in recent years. I'm excited for the chance that this change at coach actually changes the trajectory of the franchise. As the optimism of 2012 showed, winning cures all. HTTR!

As long as he doesn't call them the maroon and black, we're good!

"storied franchise"

"past glory"

"best fans in the league"

"real Redskin"

"nobody wants to win more than Mr. Snyder does"

Ones we won't hear:

"fighting his guts out"

"caveman"

"cyborg"

We're about to find out who our DC is. God I hope the reports are wrong and it's not Haslett.

But if it's Haslett, I hope we at least switch back to a 4-3. And let him call his own damn plays so we know who to blame.

Gruden said "If Robert doesn't like a play or is not comfortable with it, I'm not going to call it". So I guess he is calling the plays! Still says he wants to interview people for staff. Said no decision on an OC/DC yet.

No official word on coordinators. Gruden says he's going to talk to a lot of people, both inside and outside the organization.

Also says he will call plays.

Both Bruce and Jay saying that personnel decisions will be a group effort, but Allen did say he would ultimately be responsible for all decisions.

Seemed 99.9% committed to the 3-4. Not that I know anything, but I bet Cofield and Baker were hoping to be DTs in a 4-3, and Orakpo and Kerrigan were hoping to be pass rushing DEs.

In radio interview, he said same thing if Kirk doesn't like a play. He said several things where he is showing that he is not a put a square peg into a circular hole type guy.

He talks/sounds a lot like his brother (understandably), so the one thing that's for certain is we're going to be hearing the word "alls" a lot over the next few years.

"Alls I know, is that..."

Best part of the press conference was when he was explaining that he hadn't chosen coordinators yet and someone asked him about the rumor of McVay being named OC already. Gruden laughed and said "good for Sean" without missing a beat, and went on to talk about his upcoming interviewing of people for coordinator staff jobs.

I think it was a good press conference for Gruden. I listened online, did not see, but seems he handled it well and didn't sound like a buffoon. That's not saying much, but considering Zorn failed the sounding like a buffoon test, it at least says something. Can't believe how much he sounds like his brother. All i can picture is Jon talking.

The one thing I do not understand is he said they would likely stick with the 3-4 because the players are here that fit a 3-4. Is that really true? Most of the defense are free agents and the guys that are coming back could easily fit in a 4-3.

I didn't read it that way so much. I think his goal in the press conference was to not set off any fires, so he just said he loved the zone read and loved the 3-4 and loved Griffin as a QB ---- in other words he said complimentary things about what the Skins have been doing and who they are.

He may stay with the 3-4 but I don't think it's at all settled yet.

It's 100% obvious now, by the coaches who've been kept and by Gruden's approach, that Allen (and probably Snyder) saw the main problem with the Skins as the Shanahans.

As Allen’s conference was winding down, a television reporter with a history of asking confrontational questions raised his hand and was handed a microphone, at which point communications director Tony Wyllie signaled to end the meeting. The reporter, WUSA-TV’s Dave Owens, waved off the team employee trying to retrieve the microphone; Wyllie then walked over and, after a brief tug of war, pulled the microphone from Owens’s hand.

Owens asked the first question at Gruden's press conference.

“First of all Jay, congratulations on the position. This team is coming off of not just a 3-13 year, but one where a lot of ‘distasteful’ things happened, drama-filled things. What convinced you in the interview process that this was a place that wasn’t filled with dysfunction, and how will it be different under your [leadership]?”
I know it's early but the treatment of the local reporters covering the Redskins has improved about 1000% since Shanahan's been gone.

introductory news conference = love fest.

Everything is supposed be nice and enjoy it. This isn't the time to ask difficult questions or make others look bad.

Only heard Cooley a little bit on the way home from work today. He gave his thoughts on personnel:

On offense, the biggest need is a WR. He said the Redskins saw a lot of man coverage and the WRs really bad at getting open. The offense just can't function with only one playmaker. He like Garcon and Jordan Reed.

The OL will evaluate better than most people think. Cooley noted that the play looked better when you had a QB that stayed in the pocket more. They will probably bring in at least new OL, probably for the interior of the line.

On defense, the biggest need is inside LB. He thought they could draft a player here, as a lot of young LB has played well recently. He also thought re-signing Chris Baker is a top priority and his should be the NT. Baker drew some interest last year as a restricted free agent and will get a lot of interest if he hits the free agent market.

Orakpo will test free agency and will probably get more than the Redskins are willing to pay. He thinks they will be fine with Rob Jackson and Kerrigan at OLB.

They can use another safety, nickel corner, and 4 special teams players. He stated you need some players that play all the special teams and due to the number of snaps, you should consider them starters. There is too much to expect people to start on special teams and on offense or defense too. Mike Shanahan viewed special teams as a stepping stone to other positions, so he kept players he thought could develop into starters on offense or defense. Cooley said you need players that excel specifically at special teams. This supports his earlier comments that there just isn't enough talent on the Redskin's special teams.

Cooley said he thinks the talent is not that far off. But he also said to expect 50% turnover of the roster.

Cooley also commented on the 4-3 vs 3-4 debate. He said the defense will play less than half of its snaps in a 4-3 or 3-4 defense. They spend a lot of games in nickel packages that have 4 down linemen. Against Denver, teams use the nickel defense the whole game. So it's not the biggest deal in the world. The Redskins just need more football players on their team

Could you see us maybe going after Hakeem Nicks? A healthy Nicks alongside Garcon could be pretty dangerous.

I would ideally like Decker. Garcon and Decker would be a really nice combo. Not sure if we can afford him. A fallback option would be Maclin. Coming off an injury he may be cheap and willing to take a 1-yr deal to prove himself and hit it big. Could be a nice piece to add

I wouldn't want him, he is always hurt or hampered with something...only gets worse as he gets older and has his money. Pointed out by Matt, Decker would be the cream of the crop, but there is also J. Jones (GB) who can stretch the field, which is needed.

Yeah we shouldn't go after Jones or Nicks. The only reason Jones would be leaving the best QB in the league to play with the Skins is the money. That doesn't work out well a lot of times. See Greg Jennings.

Could argue Jones could have more opportunity in Washington. In Green Bay, Cobb and Nelson are the 2 clear favorites of Rodgers. Jones could come here and easily be the #2 target behind Garcon.

Sorry meant to say "shouldn't"

Yeah, obviously Nicks being injured prone makes him less desirable but if he didn't have problems with injuries, he would never make it to free agency. Maclin is in the same boat but seems like he has a lower ceiling than Nicks. Depending on the price, I wouldn't mind taking a flyer on either.

Not sure about Decker. He could be good but something about paying #1 money for the Broncos 3rd best WR is hard to stomach.

The Raider Nation slip-up is close.

Gruden outwits Haslett

“We had a pretty good indication that they were gonna be in Cover-0 when we went wildcat with whoever we had back there other than a quarterback, whether it’s a running back or wide receiver,” Gruden said (h/t DC Sports Bog). “It took a little bit of time, but the free safety came out of the middle of the field, and came in the box, and we knew we had A.J. one-on-one against a safety.”

This wasn’t a play that the Bengals had sitting in their playbook. It was designed to go against Haslett and the Redskins.

“Actually, it was just for this game,” Gruden said. “Because Coach Haslett, I was just watching their wildcat reel. And every wildcat snap they had, they played Cover-0. And I’ve been waiting for it.”

A Cover-0 is not necessarily a bad way to defend against the Wildcat. It is bad if you run the same defense against the same formation every time.

I do like the fact that Gruden wants to fit plays to what his players do well, and wants to eliminate plays the QB's don't run well. I've praised Kyle in the past for the periods of time in which he adjusted what he called to fit what they players on the field did best. But Kyle would always revert to "his system".

I agree. No point in rushing into saying we're going to do X, Y and Z. Watch film, talk to the players and decide what will work best.

Pierre Garcon has a lot to say. BTW I really like Garcon on the team, due both to his onfield play and to him making sense in difficult situations.

Garçon also said he doesn’t believe that Griffin, who was benched the final three games, had become too close to owner Dan Snyder or, perhaps, too full of himself, as some recent reports have suggested.

“It’s not reality,” he said. “But quarterbacks on any team have a little more power than anybody else in the locker room. They are the quarterback. They are the coach that’s on the field. They have the franchise in their hand every play."

Garçon continued: “But he’s not walking around with his chest [puffed] out and saying, ‘Hey, I’m the man.’ He’s Robert. He’s actually a fun guy in the locker room. He plays his music. He does little goofy things with us. …He plays his music a lot. He loves his music.”

Gruden also did a talk with the on-air guys at 106.7 the Fan and did an interview with Dave Owens. Sounds like the local press corp is finally going to be able to cover the Skins again without having to tiptoe around the Shanahan bunker.

He also bought all the media guys pizza

re: FA WRs, I know I might be in the minority here, but I'd like to pursue Golden Tate. I don't think he'd come with a price tag as high as Decker. Nicks is more accomplished, but I wouldn't trust his health. Tate has been dinged up too, but I think he'll play more hungry. I know he acts like a punk a$$ sometimes.

To be fair, the Redskins have done this for years. Still, I like Gruden's openness and ease with the local press. Allen has been more talkative as well.

Bruce Allen talking about Dan Snyder's involvement in football decisions.

“After working with Dan for four years now, can you say ‘no’ to Dan Snyder?” EB asked.

“Well I don’t know if you say ‘no’ or ‘yes’ or ‘maybe,’” Allen answered. “Dan will ask questions. And he’ll ask, you know, what you want to do. He’s been completely supportive of everything Mike has wanted to do, and he’s been supportive of ideas that I have had. And his focus is, ‘what do you guys want to do?’ and ‘how can I help’ and then ‘go do it.’”

“So you don’t feel pressure to have to, like subtle pressures, where even in the past where Dan has reportedly said ‘hey look, I want this guy. You guys don’t want him? Well I hope he doesn’t become an All-Pro over there, because that’ll be on you guys.’ Like those kind of subtle pressure, you don’t see that happening?”

“No, well I hope that other guy doesn’t become an All-Pro somewhere else, but, no, the players that we choose will be a decision of the coaches and the personnel people. The coaches and players we choose will be based on our decisions. And that’s what Dan wants us to do. He doesn’t want to get involved. Since I’ve been here, he’s never watched one foot of tape or looked at any of the scouting reports. Now he’ll see the big vision and the big board once it’s set up, but that’s what he wants us to do.”
