I'll get off my soapbox at some point, but so far the let down stings too much to not VENT...
I think the FO is letting the market set itself instead of being the team to always set the market prices. I was bummed to not land one of the top safeties, but looking at this list from Rotoworld, I think we can still sign an impact guy.Agree with bolded for sure. Problem is we are not prestigious anymore as a franchise, we have had losing season over n over...so we have to over pay to get talent because there is no lure to coming to Redskins. We don't have the luxury to sit back, like the top franchises and ESPECIALLY not when we are 3-13 with horrible defense that is missing as many part as we have. Front office seems reactionary opposed to being aggressive from the looks of it.There's still help out there at safety: http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/nfl/45947/309/2014-nfl-free-agents?pg=2With all the holes we have, especially at safety...all top target safeties are GONE. Who's going to play safety? Point of weakness last year and none on roster and we are signing 29-30 year old special teamers instead...I call that losing when we have as many holes as we have. Not saying break the bank on one player, but at some point you have to make a move to fill your holes and we have plenty. At this point, RAK better play more than just OLB...How are they losing in FA? We're not even 24hrs inRedskins taking 3-13 record to Free Agency and losing there too...in-season climate carries over to off-season...used to losing now.
Oh and the Guard, grades out as a good pass blocker and terrible run blocker, I can see why it was important to jump on him in the first hour of FA.
So because we signed someone early that you don't think they should've signed early, we're losing? Who cares when we sign someone, all I want to know is does the person we signed fill a need. So far, everyone we've signed fills a need.
Hall, Orakpo, Riley, Baker, Moss, Roberts, Louvao and the ST guy from Tampa all fill needs this team has. We weren't going to fix the entire roster the first 18 hours of FA.
Fixed it, as that was my round about point...all the impact guys are gone as the market set itself and we decided to not participate or invest in it. Sure there are other things that can be done and all is not lost, but we not only missed out on the Safety position, but targeted CB's and DL. Best news is that Riley's contract looks to be real good and not a hindrance for team at all.I think the FO is letting the market set itself instead of being the team to always set the market prices. As a team coming off a 3-13, there are obviously alot of holes to fill on this roster. But so far with the guys we've signed, we've been able to address some of them. It's still early. If we go into training camp with these holes, I'll be more concerned.
Right and understand that, unfortunately we have NEVER in last decade had as many holes on the roster as we have right now. We were 3-13 for a reason and that reason was not just Shanny, we are missing talent in a lot of areas. Of course, every team is not complete and has that issue to smaller degree, but we a devoid of talent at the starter positions and lack depth too. Scary when we are just sitting back as lack of draft picks makes building via FA essential.I think the Redskins are going just fine so far in free agency. I am sure they could have landed the big names, but did not want to pay them as much as they wanted. Mitchell got $25M for 5 years. Cooley loved Mitchell, but thought he would be a $2m per year guy. I am sure we could have gotten him for $6M per year, but is he really worth that much?
There will be better values for the Redskins coming up. And given the number of players they are looking for, it makes sense to go in that direction.
In the past, I have always been skeptical of the big name free agents the Redskins signed on day 1. This is the first time I remember when they had money to burn and they did not burn through it the moment they could.
We don't lack draft picks. Still have 6 (one each in rounds 2-7). Sure, the one we're missing is a big one, but all is not lost.Scary when we are just sitting back as lack of draft picks makes building via FA essential.
Again, I do not see signatures as I careless what anyone including you puts in it. Also, leave it to Mr. Positivity to understand that and call names. Maybe an idiot is a person who puts a handle that can be interpreted as something different. I'm calling your bluff, based off your negativity I in no way believe it has anything to do with support of the Redskins from your posts. But say what you like. You can make up all the different ways you want HTTR to mean all you want. Clearly says Hater to me, your posts support my claim.FYI - AGAIN, YOU ARE AN IDIOT as HTTR is HAIL TO THE REDSKINS, it's in my signature...go sell crazy elsewhere, we're all stocked up here.Do you think you are going to get any positivity or reason about a teams signing from a guy whose handle is named after hating your franchise QB? Seeing that negativity from a fan of the team is off putting. Redskins have made some good signings and are attempting to make their team better. They can make their fanbase better by getting rid of negativity like RG3 Hater. There's still help out there at safety: http://www.rotoworld.com/articles/nfl/45947/309/2014-nfl-free-agents?pg=2With all the holes we have, especially at safety...all top target safeties are GONE. Because even when we had picks we didn't know how to use them. Are any Vinny drafted players besides Orakpo still on the team and contributing?Considering the picks that have been wasted and traded, we've been lacking for some time...how do you think our roster got so thin on talent? We don't lack draft picks. I don't see any way Hall moves to safety. He was their best defensive player last year. You don't take away a strength and use it to plug a hole.Speculation.
Defense. Good chance hall is moving to FS. Another 2 cb come in on budget figures ... Rogers + 1 more. Add a de. Get lbs in draft.
Well that's already an upgrade over Chris Chester then. And if you read a little more about him you'll see they didn't run the same blocking scheme in Cleveland that the Redskins use, so how he'll run block here is unknown. The phrase "good pass blocker" is sorely needed here.Oh and the Guard, grades out as a good pass blocker and terrible run blocker, I can see why it was important to jump on him in the first hour of FA.
I'm fine with the Redskins' signings so far, but at safety I do think an investment of $5 million/year on Mitchell would have upgraded their entire defense more than the same amount of money spread over several different players. A good free safey really takes the load off the CB's and they're no longer the last line of defense wondering where safety help was while some WR heads down the field for another TD. That's one position where I think paying well would have paid off for them.I think the Redskins are going just fine so far in free agency. I am sure they could have landed the big names, but did not want to pay them as much as they wanted. Mitchell got $25M for 5 years. Cooley loved Mitchell, but thought he would be a $2m per year guy. Just stop. You stopped into a random thread, misunderstood something any Redskin fan has known for 20 years, picked a fight, and now you want to continue it despite being wrong. Man up, you made a mistake, admit it and move on.Again, I do not see signatures as I careless what anyone including you puts in it. Also, leave it to Mr. Positivity to understand that and call names. The roster is bad now, but was even worse when Vinny left.Right and understand that, unfortunately we have NEVER in last decade had as many holes on the roster as we have right now.
I actually don't think the roster is in that bad shape. The 3-11 makes them look a lot worse. The roster is bad now, but was even worse when Vinny left.Right and understand that, unfortunately we have NEVER in last decade had as many holes on the roster as we have right now.
Not bad in devoid of talent, terrible in cap mgmt and crazy contracts. Unfortunately, we are not a prestigious franchise by any means, so to get an real talent...we have to overpay to a degree, just not go Haynesworth type overpay though. The roster is bad now, but was even worse when Vinny left.Right and understand that, unfortunately we have NEVER in last decade had as many holes on the roster as we have right now.
Ok, we were one of the WORST defenses in the league last year and were exposed because our offense was not a dynamic as the previous year (covered our weakness/holes). What have we done to improve it??? So, if our roster was not in bad shape and produced terrible Defense then...???I actually don't think the roster is in that bad shape. The 3-11 makes them look a lot worse. The roster is bad now, but was even worse when Vinny left.Right and understand that, unfortunately we have NEVER in last decade had as many holes on the roster as we have right now.
For instance, Will Montgomery had a pretty bad year last year. But the year before, we was actually pretty good. If the decision makers think Gruden can get more good years out of Montgomery, they should keep him and give it a shot. The Redskin dysfunction makes everyone look worse. Also, if any of Shanahan's draft picks actually pan out (LeRibeus, Gettis, Compton, Rambo, etc), the roster will look significantly better. It is too early to give up on these guys.
The roster was in dismal shape when Shanahan took over. It was pretty week when Gibbs 2 started. I don't think it is nearly as bad now.
Agree, it wasn't just about Byrd...although when the others had signed...it completely turned into his market. When you have a significant need and whiff on not one, but two, three...you have to start wondering if the person driving is under the influence of something because it makes no sense. I love value, but as we know the Redskins defense needs more than value to fix it or to be an average NFL defense.I get the frustration when there is a big need at safety and the top guys are getting scooped up, but I am actually okay with no Jairus Byrd at his price. Once the Eagles got Malcolm Jenkins I thought we'd have little competition for Byrd and we'd get a deal, but then the Saints came in with their big offer. You have to wait til the process is over to really evaluate though, a lot of the big names are gone but after the first couple days is when it becomes a buyer's marker and the best values are had. The goal now is to get 75-80% of the performance of the guys that just got signed for 50% of the price, and that's still pretty feasible IMO.
Verner is actually the guy that jumps out at me as someone who went for a reasonable price and fills a need that we have, that's someone I would have really liked. I agree that Corey Graham would be a good get. Rodgers-Cromartie also interests me, he has been pretty good but made some dumb comment about possibly retiring if they won the Super Bowl and it seems like it may have deflated his FA buzz. We really need the pass rush to improve greatly for the secondary to have a chance anyways.
Speaking of "not prestigious" this one made me chuckle a bit.RGIII HTTR said:Not bad in devoid of talent, terrible in cap mgmt and crazy contracts. Dan Daly @dandalyonsports 9 mins
Gibbs was a drawing card in free agency. So was Shanny, inasmuch as he'd won 2 titles. For now, at least, Jay Gruden is Zeppo Marx
Well remember all those people that didn't want to bring back Orakpo? Wasn't their argument that we needed more money because we had so many holes to fill? Now they're mad because we aren't spending a ton of money on 1 or 2 players. Can't win for losing around here. And to be fair about the defense, it's not like they've done nothing. They re-signed Hall, Riley, Baker (a big deal to me), and Orakpo so far. Imagine things without those guys.
http://washington.cbslocal.com/2014/03/11/2014-redskins-free-agency-tracker/
- Redskins sign OT Bruce Campbell to one-year deal, reportedly worth $645K, per ESPN’s John Keim.
- Redskins hosting offensive tackle Bruce Campbell (formerly Panthers) on Wednesday, via Aaron Wilson.
- Defensive end Antonio Smith (formerly Texans), was seen on his way to the airport Tuesday, telling a reporter he was flying to Washington. Asked if he had other visits scheduled, he said he wanted to see how his visit with the Skins went before addressing other interested teams.
So the same defense as we had last year (that struggled) with no upgrades in depth or glaring missing starting positions (ILB, S, CB, DL).And to be fair about the defense, it's not like they've done nothing. They re-signed Hall, Riley, Baker (a big deal to me), and Orakpo so far. Imagine things without those guys.
Not sure what qualifies as nothing, but...So, take our best CB and move him to another position??? Who's covering the WR's if Hall is moving to safety? Amerson and Crawford??? LOL....we thought we were on track to set records for most passing yards allowed before, we haven't seen anything yet then as the pass rush and LB'ers haven't improved any either.I like that they didn't sign anyone big named. There will be bargains after the top names are signed. For example, there are a ton of WRs out there that aren't getting what their agents told them they would get (ie nicks, decker, etc). Sprites may hit the market. Those are all impact players.
Safety is my big concern right now. As I mentioned long ago, I wouldn't be surprised if they resigned merriweather and played hall at some FS.
Remember we need to depth to add players to ST and in 2 years we will hopefully need to sign RG3 reed and Morris. That could be expensive so you don't want to tie up long term $s.
He's got 3 other teams looking him originally, but has said he's like to return to Texans first.http://washington.cbslocal.com/2014/03/11/2014-redskins-free-agency-tracker/

Nice when you have depth and take chances on 3rd stringers becoming something more than 3rd stringer. Great value add for 2nd day of FA after the rush of 1st day FA's got overpaid.Bruce Campbell signing works for me. Bringing him in for peanuts and if it works, it's a steal. If not, we're only paying him peanuts.
I think it's an option, but like Plan Q. I think that's where they go if the next few weeks, draft, and June 1 cuts don't give them something. Basically, that's their "Crap, we're starting Training Camp and we have no safeties."Safety is my big concern right now. As I mentioned long ago, I wouldn't be surprised if they resigned merriweather and played hall at some FS.
Yes, because there are still quality CBs left in FA...a lot of them. S...not so much. As a Hokie I'm glad Hall has a good year last year, but he is hardly a shutdown corner anymore and he's requested several times to move to FS. I think they can prolong his career and happiness by letting him be a ball hawk back there. He can't tackle for $H!t. But right now Rambo is back there, and that guy couldn't even tackle my dead grandmom. So, take our best CB and move him to another position??? Who's covering the WR's if Hall is moving to safety? Being smart is one thing, but value is not a luxury when we have with such a depleted roster. That being said, don't misunderstand what I'm saying as of course signing all the TOP $$$ guys is not the answer either,
First hand knowledge of the safety state of affairs...from our just stepped down defensive captain. It appears he hasn't taken one shot to many to the head.
Maybe Shanahan majorly undermined the defense. Had an incompetent spy coaching the linebackers last year. Etc, etc.RGIII HTTR said:Ok, we were one of the WORST defenses in the league last year and were exposed because our offense was not a dynamic as the previous year (covered our weakness/holes). Barring a diamond in the rough, getting lucky...we might be in serious trouble. Unless we are truly buying into this Shanny was holding Haz back significantly, which might partially true, but in reality is more like horse crap.

Look, defensive guys are getting completely overpaid in FA. Talib isn't close to worth that. Byrd either. There is still value to be had.
If the Redksins had signed Byrd and Talib and Ware and Decker...the press and a lot of fans would be beating them up for spending too much money on just 4 players. And they'd be right too, because the rest of the holes would be there. OL, LB, ST. They need quantity more than they need quality.
I am rooting for signing Ryan Clark. Maybe he will end the curse of the Redskin's safeties.Ryan Clark will visit with the RedskinsPosted by Josh Alper on March 12, 2014, 2:34 PM EDT
APSafety Ryan Clark played a couple of seasons with the Redskins before joining the Steelers and he could be headed back to Washington now that it looks like there’s no spot for him in Pittsburgh.
Clark broke the news that he’d be visiting with the Redskins in his sideline as an ESPN talking head on Wednesday. It’s the first visit that Clark will be making since the start of free agency.
Clark will turn 35 this year and definitely isn’t the same player he was earlier in his career, but the Redskins are as desperate for safety help as any team in the league. They got shoddy play at the position all of last season and both Brandon Meriweather and Reed Doughty are free agents. With many of the top free agent safeties off the board already, Washington is in a position where rolling the dice on Clark could make sense.
Clark had 104 tackles and two interceptions last season and his expected departure from Pittsburgh became all but certified when the team signed Mike Mitchell on Tuesday.
i would be ok with ryan clark @ SS, esp over doughty. From PFT:

LOL because Shanny was missing those tackles and blowing coverage assignments. Gotcha! On a 3-11 team, no one ends up looking that good. That is my only point.
The fact is no one on the Redskins had a particularly good year last year. Management has shown a lot of faith in the currently players. I sure hope they are right.

Being smart is one thing, but value is not a luxury when we have with such a depleted roster. That being said, don't misunderstand what I'm saying as of course signing all the TOP $$$ guys is not the answer either,
Look, defensive guys are getting completely overpaid in FA.
OL, LB, ST. They need quantity more than they need quality.
people often remember the cam newton ride he took during cam's rookie yr that pretty much costs the skins that gm and judge him by that. fact is, he's a better than avg tackler and has no problem putting his head into the churning legs of a WR or RB. i see it every yr, fairly consistently.
i tend to agree with you on haslett. guess we'll have to ride it out and see.LOL because Shanny was missing those tackles and blowing coverage assignments. Gotcha! That Shanny held down shtick is odl and worn out, it's about time people woke up and stop drinking the kool aid that being provided.Maybe Shanahan majorly undermined the defense. Had an incompetent spy coaching the linebackers last year. Etc, etc.RGIII HTTR said:Ok, we were one of the WORST defenses in the league last year and were exposed because our offense was not a dynamic as the previous year (covered our weakness/holes). What have we done to improve it??? So, if our roster was not in bad shape and produced terrible Defense then...???Marvelous said:I actually don't think the roster is in that bad shape. The 3-11 makes them look a lot worse.fatness said:The roster is bad now, but was even worse when Vinny left.RGIII HTTR said:Right and understand that, unfortunately we have NEVER in last decade had as many holes on the roster as we have right now.
Barring a diamond in the rough, getting lucky...we might be in serious trouble. Unless we are truly buying into this Shanny was holding Haz back significantly, which might partially true, but in reality is more like horse crap.
On a 3-11 team, no one ends up looking that good. That is my only point.
The fact is no one on the Redskins had a particularly good year last year. Management has shown a lot of faith in the currently players. I sure hope they are right.
I previously wrote that Reed Doughty is one of the no-brainer re-signings. He is a very good special teams player, solid for a back up safety, and signs a 1 year, veteran minimum contract every year.i would be ok with ryan clark @ SS, esp over doughty. From PFT:
Clark had 104 tackles and two interceptions last season and his expected departure from Pittsburgh became all but certified when the team signed Mike Mitchell on Tuesday.
well said. also, in some way id like to pretend that a clark signing would 'reset' the karmic universe for us at safety.I previously wrote that Reed Doughty is one of the no-brainer re-signings. The only issue I have with Reed Doughty is he plays way too many plays on defense and starts too many games. But is more of a statement on the Redskin's other safeties than on Reed Doughty.
Nope, more of the same **WHIFF** he's signed with Buffalo while he was sitting in Redskins park. Free agent Captain Munnerlyn will visit the Vikings...yikes!fatness said:I don't see any way Hall moves to safety. He was their best defensive player last year. You don't take away a strength and use it to plug a hole.Brunell4MVP said:Speculation.
Defense. Good chance hall is moving to FS. Another 2 cb come in on budget figures ... Rogers + 1 more. Add a de. Get lbs in draft.
I think they'll make a pretty big effort to sign Graham at CB when he comes in to talk. And to me it's looking more and more like their first draft pick may be a safety.
About the bolded:Yes, because there are still quality CBs left in FA...a lot of them. S...not so much. As a Hokie I'm glad Hall has a good year last year, but he is hardly a shutdown corner anymore and he's requested several times to move to FS. Probably means he got an offer from another team. This year the Redskins seem to have that Joe's Fleabag Motel look to free agents. 3-13 will do that.
