i was just being touchy, dont mind me.

i suppose its a product of my surprise w/ how some of my fellow fans are upset about this seemingly frugal approach to FA and using it as an argument to support this FO's ineptness.

He had lined up at right defensive end in Dallas’ 3-4 front before switching to defensive tackle when the Cowboys went with a 4-3 front this past season.

His acquisition further puts in doubt the future of defensive end Stephen Bowen, who is coming off of microfracture surgery and has a cap hit of just more than $7 million.

He had visited both the Seattle Seahawks and Oakland Raiders and was scheduled to visit Washington on Friday, but the Redskins pulled off a deal with him in advance of his trip to the area.

The Redskins have signed former Dallas defensive lineman Jason Hatcher, his agent tweeted and the team confirmed. The four-year contract is worth $27.5 million, according to sources. It's the biggest deal handed out this free agency by Washington, which sought to bolster its pass rush.

The 6-foot-6, 299-pound Hatcher is coming off his best season with 11 sacks, but he'll turn 32 in July. In Dallas' 3-4 front, he recorded a combined 8.5 sacks in 2011 and '12. The Redskins will mix their fronts, using a 3-4 for their base -- but they spent a lot of time in a nickel package last season. Hatcher will play end in the Redskins' 3-4 scheme, according to a source.

Hatcher's ability to collapse the pocket was something Washington lacked this past season. That left too much pressure on the outside linebackers to generate pressure.

A source said the Redskins are also trying to finalize a deal with another Cowboys' free agent, defensive end Anthony Spencer.

The Redskins added several other parts total to their defense Thursday. In addition to Hatcher, they signed cornerback Tracy Porter and inside linebacker Darryl Sharpton.

Porter likely will be the No.3 corner and cover in the slot. Sharpton, if healthy, could end up starting alongside Perry Riley.

Washington also signed defensive lineman Clifton Geathers.

Free agent cornerback Tracy Porter and linebacker Darryl Sharpton agreed to deals, according to multiple reports. Sharpton signed a one year deal worth $2 million. Porter's terms were uncertain. Porter fills a job as the slot corner while Sharpton giving the Redskins depth at inside linebacker. Injuries have limited his career and Sharpton has never played a full season. He only played more than 10 games twice in his four seasons with the Houston Texans.

But Sharpton is considered strong against the run, which the Redskins place more importance on out of the inside linebacker position. If healthy, he could end up as the starter.

Porter was a versatile player for the Oakland Raiders last season and had perhaps his best season, with two interceptions, 13 passes defended and 1.5 sacks. But this will be his third new team in three seasons and his fourth overall.

The Redskins wanted to bolster their defensive line and still may do so by adding another starter. For now, they'll settle for potential depth.

The Redskins signed defensive lineman Clifton Geathers, who is now with his sixth team since 2010. He played 16 games with Philadelphia last season, the first time in his career he played more than eight. The 6-foot-8, 340-pound Geathers will compete at defensive end. He has one career sack and 12 career tackles, all in the last two seasons. Cleveland selected Geathers in the sixth round of the 2010 draft, but was cut that summer.

He’s the nephew of former Redskins defensive lineman Jumpy Geathers, who played here from 1990-92.

None of this makes any sense. Porter is a fine slot guy, gets burned deep on the outside. Just have to utilize him correctly. Rambo doesn't even play the same position. If you're using PFF to fuel your thoughts about Porter in coverage...you should stop doing that. They also have Hall in the bottom 20% of the league, as we know how good his year was.

Chris Cooley was very skeptical that Bowen will be on the team. He said it is very difficult to recover from microfracture surgery, especially for big guys. He also said a lot of times microfacture surgery is done to prolong the life of the knee after playing. He thought the chances of Bowen ever recovering were not good.

 
I kind of agree with what both of you said about Bowen. I think maybe someone put out the "Bowen might not be gone" talk due to Hatcher and Bowen being personal friends. "Hey Jason, here's your contract to sign, we're firing your friend to make room for you" might not have been a good approach to take.

So you are telling me that because one is a S and one is a CB that I can't make comparisons? And PFF having him 105/110isn't what I'm going on. FACT: Both get burned deep. FACT: Both are poor tacklers. They have the same holes in their games. If all Porter does is play in the nickel, I guess he's fine. But isn't he going to have to do more given the roster?

I do like the Hatcher signing. I think it will really give them a lot of options on how they use other players and deliver a pass rush.

 
Will Montgomery is getting released (creates ~$2 mill in cap savings). When Lauvao was signed there was a good bit of talk/speculation that Lichtensteiger would move to C. Looks like that will be the case now.

Cooley said a couple days ago that the Skins were officially moving Lichtensteiger to center, so it's pretty clear now that Lauvao will replace Lichtensteiger at left guard. Somebody remind me why Chester is still starting?

 
Hatcher

He's a guy who flourished in a 4-3 now he's going to a 3-4, how will he fit in Washington?

Keim: I think he'll fit nicely (and I'm sure his new deal convinced him a 3-4 was, well, OK). But he won't strictly be a 3-4 end. I'm sure he'll play end in a base package and inside in their nickel package. They used the latter nearly 70 percent of the time last season. I know his role changed in Dallas last year, but I can't believe the Redskins would deviate too much from where he had success as a rusher. And clearly that success came inside, as the Redskins know better than anyone. One team source said Hatcher's inside pressure was the best they'd seen against them in a few years.

Totally agree with this, the secondary will look much better with a decent push. I like the Hatcher signing a lot.

Does anyone know anything about the safety from the Dolphins? Clemons? Consensus I am seeing suggests he is the best safety left and it sounds like he is pretty solid, better in coverage than vs the run. Wonder if we have a shot there?

 
I'm getting the feeling that FA signings will continue to slow down, and players (like Clemons perhaps) who thought they'd get bigger offers will be available for some time. There will be some bargains to be had as time goes by.

I still think they'll target a S with their second round pick. It's the biggest need on the team.

“My game was getting upfield and causing havoc,” Hatcher, who signed his four-year, $27.5 million deal Friday, said in a conference call with local reporters. “Not just sitting back and reading blocks. I’m able to get up and disrupt and penetrate gaps. I took my game to another level. In a 3-4 a lot of guys sit back ... but they have great stuff for me, and I can get upfield and cause havoc like I’ve been doing.”


The Redskins have used a lot of two-gap schemes up front, but with a desire to apply more pressure they will use more one-gap schemes. So instead of a defensive lineman’s first step being lateral and worrying about two gaps, they can get upfield into a particular gap. It allows defensive linemen to be more aggressive.

That is partly why Hatcher recorded a career-best 11 sacks with Dallas last season. It’s likely, too, that he will move around -- playing end in their 3-4 scheme and tackle in their nickel.

Hatcher said veteran cornerback DeAngelo Hall called him, and quarterback Robert Griffin III texted him after he agreed to a deal. Griffin’s message?

“He told me he was happy I ain’t chasing him no more,” Hatcher said.

I think some fans were giving him a hard time. What happens on Twitter has nothing to do with where he signs.

 
Safety Ryan Clark remains in a holding pattern with Washington. He tweeted early Friday a message that came across as highly pessimistic: “Redskins fans only following me if I'm going to be a Redskin can unfollow me for now! Still treating me the way they always have. Never know” But his agent, Joel Turner, said not to read too much into that tweet and then pointed out Clark’s next one: “I will always appreciate the Skins taking a chance on a 24 year old working at LSU. I will never forget what they did for me. Gratitude” And, Turner said earlier Friday that there were still three or four teams Clark is considering and he did not rule out the Redskins. Whether there's still a real chance remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, the Redskins remain interested in free-agent tackle Donald Penn. Earlier Friday evening there was no visit set up yet with Penn, but CBS’ Jason La Canfora tweeted that Penn would be visiting this weekend. The Redskins would like to upgrade at right tackle. Penn had been a left tackle, but the feeling in Tampa, which released him, was that he was no longer effective at that position. Therefore, a move to the right side would be natural. Penn was visiting with Oakland.

Cornerback Brandon Browner, who was supposed to visit Friday, never did and has agreed to a three-year deal with New England. His former teammate, Walter Thurmond, also did not visit.

Tight end Owen Daniels visited and it was termed a good one by a team source. The Redskins like him, but no deal had been worked out as of Friday night.

The Redskins are expected to host free agent offensive tackle Donald Penn, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed.

Washington’s efforts to improve the offensive line that will protect Robert Griffin III and pave the way for Pro Bowl running back Alfred Morris remain ongoing.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released Penn earlier this week. He has started 108 consecutive games dating from the 2007 season. He has spent the majority of his career at left tackle, but Washington has interest in acquiring him to play right tackle.

The 6-foot-5, 340-pound Utah State product made the Pro Bowl in 2010. Redskins general manager Bruce Allen held the same title in Tampa during a portion of Penn’s career there, and Redskins secondary coach Raheem Morris served as Penn’s head coach from 2009-11.

CBS Sports first reported that the Redskins were expected to host Penn and that the team also has begun the early stages of contract negotiations with his camp.

John Keim: Plans for the draft always change after free agency. But I’m not sure how much their plans might have changed. They still need help at certain areas. The good news for them is that some of the positions they still need to address are solid in the draft. There are some good safety options in the first three rounds; it’s said to be a deep draft at corner and receiver.

Keim: I’ll get there in a minute. First, though, they can help the safety position by improving the pass rush and that’s what they feel they’re doing by tweaking their scheme and adding Jason Hatcher. If they do that, then the secondary will be helped. That said, they still need more bodies deep. From what I’ve heard they did not view certain safeties, such as Miami’s Chris Clemons, as better than what they had a year ago with Brandon Meriweather (and only a slight upgrade over Reed Doughty). I wouldn’t be surprised if one or both of those players returned. Doughty would not be brought back to start. I also think there’s a split opinion of him in the building. I think they still like some of the young safeties. If Phillip Thomas recovers well from his Lisfranc injury, that would help. But even then it will take time.

So how good is Clark? Is this someone we'd be upset over if we lose out on him? Or would it really be sort of a "so what?" situation?

 
Good stuff fatness, sounds like they aren't interested in Clemons at all then. Like I said, I dunno anything about him tbh...just saw that he seems to be fairly well regarded and is still out there. Good to see that what we need should still be there in rounds 2 and 3.

Personally, I am pretty meh on getting Clark.

I couldn't care less either way with Clark. He'll turn 35 this season and has probably never really been anything other than an average starter. Yeah, that would be an improvement here, but nothing to get excited. I've grown so tired of hearing how horrible it was that we let him go years ago as if he's a special player.
