***Official*** Washington Redskins 2014 Offseason Thread (2 Viewers)

Good news in my opinion. The Browns expect to play their starters for the first half on Monday. The Skins plan to play their starters for the first quarter. That means the second quarter will be Skins second-teamers against Browns starters. That's when you can see who's really an NFL backup and who will be a train wreck if they ever get on the field.
i agree, fatness.

i'll be watching how this plays out, too.

Not sure if its true, but either way, not a good thing to hear this....

Saying RG3 is not very liked in the locker room, and is alienating his teammates. Not sure how this reporter would know this, but don't like hearing this kind of crap either way...
already been disputed by many local beat reporters.

Total headline grabbing bull####. Not even worthy of the click.

ugh..... slide!!!
I would be more worried with the fact that SuperBob is still throwing pass off his back foot. I mean he had the excuse with the leg last year but now it is just poor fundamentals

Plus it doesn't help that he still doesn't know how to slide. I mean how do you get up limping after a slide

Yea hopefully thats just a preseason reminder he will learn from. But him taking those hits in preseason game. I think he is just too competitive to slide. Frankly he looks awkward when he does. ah well.

...and that's why, as long as he continues to develop, you do whatever it takes to keep Cousins on that roster...

Was it just me or did it look like he was going to DeSean more than Garcon?
Definitely. I'd say it's purposeful, getting timing down before the season. He completed 113 passes to Garçon last year, not as much practice needed there even in a new offense.

The downside to being a great running QB in high school and college is you rarely get caught by anybody and you can usually avoid contact by running out of bounds. This means that you never really learn to slide to protect yourself and you have less awareness of when someone is going to hit you in the NFL because you rarely got hit prior to the NFL. Michael Vick is a prime example of this. He also is a terrible slider and seems to have no awareness when he is about to get drilled. That is a big reason why he was such a turnover machine in his last couple of years with the Eagles.

Griffin seems to be suffering from the same thing. He better overcome it quickly or he is going to be knocked out of some games.

Agreed. He's probably never had to slide much because he could outrun everyone on the field. Doesn't happen as often in the NFL. It seems simple to just say, "he needs to learn to slide". But he's got to retrain his whole line of thinking to be able to do that. I think he can and will. I really think Gruden will keep preaching to him that he needs to slide or his career/season will be cut short.

What has he been doing in the offseason? There is a baseball team in Washington and I'm sure they would be more than willing to teach him how to slide. When I was watching the game last night I saw the same thing you saw, Vick. If you have RG3 you better have a quality backup.

My takeaways from last night's game FWIW.

--Griffin was inconsistent and obviously has the sliding issue but I saw things I liked. He went through his progressions and several plays and looked relatively comfortable in the pocket when he had time. Would like to see more consistency in terms of footwork and decisiveness but I saw enough positives to build on.

--The right side of the offensive line still terrifies me. Chester, in particular, had several plays were he might as well have not been on the field.

--It looks like Rambo has made a huge leap in terms of tackling and getting better angles as he gets to the ball. I really like what I see out of Breeland and wonder if he is a future starter at Safety for this team. This secondary really needs young players, particularly Amerson, to develop NOW.

--The depth at RB and WR looks very good. Redd and Seastrunk both look good to me and are going to make for difficult roster decisions. Grant continues to impress and it's nice to see Aldrick Robinson running intermediate routes and looking like a complete WR as opposed to just a 9 route guy.

--Overall the defense has looked pretty good and seems to be getting fairly consistent pressure from the front 7. But it's preseason. I really hope they can get pressure in the regular season and make a drastic improvement in terms of giving up the big plays that plagued them last year.

Also there is absolutely NOTHING available up the middle for Morris. The stretch plays looked good to decent, but that goal line debacle was pathetic. Griffin's ego is going to get him nuked.

ETA: Again.

The sack was awful. Guy who created the pressure barreled through a double team (center and RG)

I thought it looked like he wasn't going through his progressions, but it can be hard to tell. I just didn't see his head moving from receiver to receiver very often. Last week, he got to his check down very quickly. This week, he seemed to take longer. Maybe it was more about wanting to get Desean or Pierre the ball downfield this week.

There was one play that it looked like he quickly recognized the lack of time and got the ball out to Young quickly in the flat. And, as I mentioned above, it looks like his explosiveness is back. Last year, he was run down from behind by DL a few times.

Interesting. I guess we would need to really look at the tape to make an accurate assessment. Last week he seemed to go to check downs almost too quickly to me without really going through his progressions.

Last night I was thinking of the first completion to DeSean where he looked to his left and saw Garcon running a post right into the safety then came back across the field to Jackson, the play to Young, and there were another couple of plays were he looked, to me, to scan the field and go through his reads.

I understand the need to be risk adverse but I do wish they would have left the 1s in on offense for at least another series. They all, and RG3 in particular, need the reps.

Keim says Griffin looked right to Jackson before coming back left on the deep ball to Roberts. And it was great to see that deep ball. He throws those so well, hopefully they take a lot of shots this year.

Seriously how many more helmet to helmet penalties is Merriweather going to get before someone tells management that he should be cut. He is an slightly above average player to begin with

The league needs to get serious with handling this. Once, twice, or three times, sure. But this is over and over and over again.

I hate that Merriweather is on our team, he's a dirty player, one of the dirtiest in the game. He never arm tackles, only spears people.

Man RG3 is really struggling throwing the sideline pass this pre-season. One INT last week and at this week 2 should have been INT's near the same position. Luckily that last one was on a free play

i dont like what i see from the O. But im glad its happening in the preseason so we can work on things. I think its going to take a lot longer than i thought for the O to get comfortable.

I feel a QB controversy brewing
If by controversy you mean that the chances of Kirk Cousins getting traded is more and more likely then sure. The reality is that Cousins is only a younger/better arm version of Rex Grossman

By the way, there is a team in St. Louis that probably needs a starting QB if Bradford is as hurt as it looked.

The optimist in me says the O has been very vanilla in preseason. In two weeks, I'd hope to see more creativity.

I know not to read too much into preseason, but the D has looked good and the O bad.
The first string offense has looked pretty awful. They couldn't run the last 2 weeks and last night they couldn't pass either. The line got collapsed on the majority of plays I saw. And what was with all the position changes on the first-unit offensive line? Chester was playing center for awhile. Chester is terrible by the way. The playcalling was terrible, playing to the offensive line's weakness -- straight drop-back pass blocking. Griffin had no time and was not good. The run blocking isn't what it used to be either. Either the entire O-line's ability level needs to jump way up in the next 2 weeks, the playcalling has to change to suit what they do well, or they're looking at 5 wins or so this year. Gruden better wake up here.

The defensive line pressure is improved over last year and it's good to see them disrupt things. And the inside linebackers seems to be in on a lot of plays --- both Robinson and Riley. The secondary, if everything goes perfectly, gets moderately close to being "average".

And just like last year the controversy would be put to rest as soon as Cousins plays a game or two. He's turnover-prone, and he's thrown numerous passes this preseason against 2nd and 3rd string defenses that would have picks in a regular season game. He's Rex Grossman Jr. -- functional pocket passer, can get hot, can give the ball to the other team easily.

How long do they give RG3 to turn it around before they draft another QB? Looks like he might suck. I don't mind the trade. They rolled the dice but now they need to figure out this year if they can salvage him. If not draft another QB in the 1st round imo.

I'd love to see him gone, but with the lack of attention the front office has given the safety position they have to keep him (until the league takes him away again). Our safeties suck, and the only thing that will save them this year is D-line pressure and young CB's improving very rapidly (Amerson, Breeland). I do not know why Allen consistently ignores that position. There were plenty of decent-to-good free agent safeties available during the offseason, Allen totally misjudged the market and missed on all of them by being cheap. Thanks Bruce, that $3 million you saved will really win us some games this year. Bad job by Allen there.
