He did it with ridiculous stuff, too. When Logan Paulsen got the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for being in the huddle and then going off the field Gruden hung that on McCoy saying the QB needed to be in control of the substitutions.

If it is true then that is an extremely risky move. If you thought Super Bob was starting to lose favor with the fans, try losing to the Vikings a week after your backup just beat the 6-1 Cowboys on national TV. It pretty much ensures that he and/or Richie Rich has the real power in the team and not Gruden
The idea of the starting QB never losing his job because of an injury only applies if you are either
a. An elite QB like Brees, Brady, or Manning. RG3 is not that guy no matter what the DC area thinks
b. The backup QB is so awful that you have to get rid of him like the plague. That applies to Cousins but right now not McCoy

Well he better be really ready to play and not the wishy washy "well he is ready if he does this or does that" then Gruden has been in the last 2 weeks. You really can't tell listening to his press conference.
It maybe a great move but if not then you are going to have a lot of explaining to do to a fanbase that is just gaga for anyone that beats the Cowboys

If hes ready, then he plays. Nothing shocking here. And i doubt they would put him out there if he wasnt. It will be good to have him back and continue to develop him.
Gruden has been clear for weeks that when Griffin is mentally caught up and ready physically he will start. Not sure where you are getting this wishy washy stuff

If he's 100% healthy, I see no reason why he shouldn't be starting. If he's 100%, it's not like his ankle can get better. He's been doing drills and such at practice for a few weeks so it's not like he's just jumping right back in there.

I'm quite frankly amazed that folks are saying that Gruden should "stay with the hot hand" and start Colt, even if RGIII is ready.
Did we learn nothing from the Kirk Cousins experiment? I know I did. Sometimes a guy can look gangbusters in relief and even through a limited number of starts, but over time, he can only succeed if he truly has the goods. Over the course of Colt's career, he's certainly prooved that he can play football at the NFL level. I also think that based on his performance the last several games, he could definitely be a very serviceable backup Quarterback. But, to conclude based on 1 1/2 games that he should supplant Griffin as starter -- immediately after we did the same thing with Cousins -- that's just incredible to me.
Even when I look at Colt's outstanding performance vs. the Cowboys, I was not left thinking, "wow, Colt put us on his shoulders and won that game." I mean, he played well, but he left a lot on the table you would not accept from a starter. Underthrowing Desean Jackson regularly absolutely cost us points. If a guy like Brady or Manning or even Cutler is throwing that ball, DJax conceivably has one or two scores in that game. I'm not saying Colt sucks...he's actually pretty decent...but let's not say just because we beat Dallas that he is Joe Montana all of a sudden.
I also agree with you that we need to just see what Griffin has -- win or lose -- so we can move on confidently as a franchise one way or the other. I guess, at 3-5, we are not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, but it's still a very long shot, so "win now" should not be the main consideration.
I think the key is whether Griffin is truly ready. Gruden is saying all the right things. He does not sound like a guy who is rushing...he is saying he's physically ready but he needs to make sure that he's mentally ready, and so on and so forth. He's sounding like a coach who is moving forward deliberately. I guess we can conclude that he's just lying and that in reality it's all a smokescreen to hide the fact that Evil Forces are making him start Robert against his will. That sounds a big conspiracy theory-ish to me and I'm giving Gruden the benefit of the doubt here.
I guess we'll see Sunday.

In the wake of these reports, I have heard numerous media types and message board posters state confidently that Griffin is probably not really ready, nor does Gruden want to start him, but he is only starting due to "less than pure reasons."

Implies that Griffin is starting because Colt has played well, meaning Griffin has to get in there to erase all doubt that he is the man. The comments that follow the post incredibly say the Redskins are stupid for not simply naming Colt McCoy the starting QB!
And yet, when I read Gruden's actual comments, either he is a terrific liar, or it really sounds like he is legitimately evaluating whether Robert is ready to play. E.g. he's physically strong but doesn't know if he needs more reps to get back mentally, etc. Why go into all that detail if it's a foregone conclusion? If it was a foregone conclusion, wouldn't you just say, "He looks ready" and go with it?
I've also seen no evidence that Snyder-Allen-Robert-Robert's father are behind all of this. Instead, it's just 100% innuendo based on the fact that the Redskins have made mistakes in the past.
My question to you guys is -- do you believe that Gruden is in control of this decision and is making it based on his eval?
Or do you believe someone is forcing him to do this against his will.
I may be naive, but I actually am giving Gruden the benefit of the doubt here. Am I being naive or foolish here?

RG3: 29/37 (78%), 267yds, 0TDs, 0INTs, 1 Fumble, 96.7 (Loss)
Colt: 25/30 (83%), 299yds, 0TDs (1 Rush), 1INT, 0 Fumbles, 94.3 (Win)
Can anyone tell a huge difference between the 2 starts? Except for that we had 1 less turnover against Dallas, created more turnovers against Dallas and didn't give up a blocked punt for a TD or have a blocked XP.

And regarding Colt's rushing TD, if I recall, that QB draw in the Redzone was a goto redzone play in 2012 when Griffin had that great season.
If they let Colt run the ball, they better let Robert run it.
I agree if he's not 100% he should sit. But I guess my question is: what are we basing our assumption that he's not healthy on? Has anyone seen anything to show that he's not healthy? Or do dislocated ankles typically take 6 months to heal? I mean, I understand the skepticism, based on past mistakes the Redskins have made. But have we really seen anything concrete to suggest that he's not ready or are we just expecting the same Redskins narrative to play out because we've been "battered" so long?

I think I would feel that way too if we played him 2 weeks ago when he first started doing individual drills in practice. There was a tweet last night from one of the beat guys with a quote from Darrel Young that said, "I thought Robert was ready to go 2 weeks ago". I think last year, Robert would have played 2 weeks ago. Instead of Gruden putting him back in at the first sign of getting back to full-strength, he made him sit another 2 weeks and prepare both mentally and physically. To me, that's the difference between last year and now with Gruden.
Dallas also has no one on defense that is quite as disruptive as JJ Watt. Despite their relative records, Houston may be the tougher defense...

Yup very true. I mean Colt play well against Dallas, however, I wouldn't say he was the reason we won. We won on the backs of our defense (as weird as it is to say that). Colt did a good job not turning the ball over like the human TO machine Kirk Cousins and that helped keep us in the game.

What sucks is that if RG3 had a good O-line or a good defense things could be so different. If he had some protection he could have time to pass instead of scrambling for his life, especially since scrambling is when he gets hurt every time. He didnt get injured on designed runs...
If he had a great defense I have no doubt he could be doing comparably to Russel Wilson. Wilson had up and down games, but when he only needed to score 10-17 pts to win games instead of 30+ it makes a huge difference.

Good points. Though the OL looks to be improving a tad, it's still not up there with some of the better OLs in the league, same for the defense. People are just so quick to try and pull the trigger on RG3 being a bust. It's crazy.
I was listening to sports talk on my way in this morning and people were saying how McCoy lead us to the biggest win in the last 12 years. Um, did everyone just somehow forget about Dec 30, 2012 when we beat the Cowboys in a default NFCE Championship game? So winning a random MNF game is more important that the division. Got it!

Agreed. If he was back in 4 weeks or something like that, then yes he was rushed. But the timeframe for this injury was anywhere from 4-8 weeks.
And I think this is the perfect time to get him back out there. If he does struggle and show signs of rust (which wouldn't be surprising) at least he and Gruden will know what to work on during the bye week.

Well, technically they could still make the playoffs. 10-6 teams make it all the time! The steelers started 2-6 last year and finished 8-8, they were 1 FG away from making the playoffs in the KC-SD game last year.

I'd be pretty happy if they went 7-9. That would mean after starting 1-5, they won 6 of their final 10 games. I thought best case if everything went right this year, they could contend for the playoffs. Sure, there's still a chance they can make the playoffs, but I'd be happy showing progress in Gruden's first season.

Hall's base salary jumps significantly next year. Unless his rehab goes really, really well I'm wondering how likely it is he gets cut, or at least forced to restructure. Especially if the young guys keep showing promise.

We've seen some hot runs 3 times in the last 10 years to make the playoffs, so it wouldn't be totally shocking to a Redskins fan. 2005 they won 5 straight to go 10-6 and get a wild card. In 2007, they won 4 straight to finish 9-7 and get a wild card. In 2012, they won 7 straight to 10-6 and win the division.
Obviously the team's focus is only Minnesota right now and getting to 4-5. As a fan, my focus is Minnesota and then Tampa and getting back to 0.500. No reason to think playoffs, even as a fan, until they can prove they can string together several wins in a row.
Playoffs or no playoffs, I mostly want to see how the offense works over several games with Griffin. Really looking forward to Sunday.

How do injury settlements work, especially their impact on the cap?
If Amerson and Breeland can continue to grow, I don't see any way they bring back Hall for anything other than a vet minimum after this injury.

They'd save approximately 2.5 million in cap space if they cut him before next season. Around 2 million in dead money.
Injury settlements are for players who settle in lieu of going on IR. It is supposed to be the equivalent of going on IR, being paid while healing, then getting cut. There is no grand savings from doing this. The team pays the player's salary for the time on IR either way.
During the off season, teams can cut injured players and the players lose any non-guaranteed part of their salary. They still get all of their guaranteed portions of their contract. If they are cut, the normal cap hits apply.
This sucks. I know it's a business and they should probably just cut him to save the money.
At the same time, Hall has been a leader and a steady veteran through tough times so I'd like to see them throw him some sort of bone instead of throwing him on the scrap heap. Remember he signed for peanuts several years ago instead of leaving on Free Agency and then he actually played himself into a better contract. He has tried to be a team guy -- I think he's one of the most underrated "veteran leaders" on the team.
That said, it's probably wise to go with the young guys at Corner. Hall is 30 and Breeland and Amerson's growth is probably best for the long term interest of the team.
I do wonder if Hall could give Safety a try; he may be able to lend a steady hand there at a position where we've really struggled.
