I can only speak for myself, but the format of this draft lends itself to confusion and apathy. When picks are being made in advance and a glance at the current page shows picks over a 20 pick range, it makes it really difficult to follow and stay on top of

Half the time determining who is OTC is a bit of a challenge

Also, when you know there is little to no chance of being sniped, you tend to not pay as much attention to the draft itself

Why should I care who someone on the other end of the draft is picking from a 2000 era season when I have an 1920s season 20 picks away

I think this draft has produced some interesting strategies and has been different than what we have done before, but I also think it has caused the above to happen

Just my two cents

Well, that would have been nice to know before I sent you my predrafts for Rounds 24 and 25.

FUTURE SIM IDEA: Thought of a way to combine the strategy of "drafting by years" and the strategies present in our old-style straight drafts. No need for dice rolls, even.

Do a regular straight draft, but have each pick lock out not only a player (no clones), but also a year. Each pick would have to declare both year and player (important: can't change the year after the next drafter picks). After four rounds, the "chalkboard is erased" and every year is up for grabs again.

For instance, if 1927 Babe Ruth is pick 1.01, 1927 Lou Gehrig is off limits until the top of the 5th round. But you can still pick 1930 or 1934 Lou Gehrig.

Picking a pitcher shuts out all the batters for that season until the current four rounds is over. If 2004 Randy Johnson were pick 1.01, anyone wanting Barry Bonds afterward would have to take his second-best (or worse) season. Same is true in reverse -- take 2000 Todd Helton early, and shut out Pedro Martinez' best season for four rounds (someone would soon take 1999 Pedro probably ... unless someone took 1999 Larry Walker or Chipper Jones to block).

The strategy would slowly build up ... the top of the draft wouldn't be too different from a normal draft, except for some strategic early blocking that wouldn't kick in for several picks. At some point, though, elite seasons would be blocked, and people would have to start strategizing and looking for alternatives. Then, you have the top of the fifth to look forward to -- can you wait it out and pounce at pick 5.03 (or better yet, 17.03) for a pressing need?

Draft order would have to be tinkered with for each four-round block. The fourth round in a serpentine would be the reverse of the first, so maybe the 4th/5th (and 8th/9th, etc). would be a break in the serpentine and just repeat the same order. Then flip it back over for the 6th, 10th, etc.

EDIT: could make it a little more challenging by limiting all picks to a 96-year period (wouldn't even have to be consecutive years).

It's much less complicated than our current draft, actually. It's just like tracking clones -- if a player's picked, he's off the board. If a year's picked, it's off the board (for a while).
