***OFFICIAL WIS XIV DRAFT THREAD*** (3 Viewers)

Edward Marvin Reulbach (Big Ed) 1905

Schools: University of Notre Dame, University of Vermont

Ed Reulbach was a key member of the pitching staff during the greatest years of the Chicago Cubs. He led the league in winning percentage in 1906-08, and was in the World Series four times. In spite of his excellent performances, it was hard to stand out on a team that had a full rotation of top pitchers, with the most prominent being Mordecai Brown.
####ERPick coming shortly.

1.06- OF Fred Lynn, 1975

After graduation from USC, Lynn started his career for the Red Sox with a phenomenal 1975 season in which he won the Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year awards, the first player ever to win both in the same season. (The feat has since been duplicated by Seattle Mariners right fielder Ichiro Suzuki in 2001.) Lynn and fellow rookie outfielder Jim Rice were dubbed as the “Gold Dust Twins” because of their combined baseball talents. In 1975, Lynn led the American League in doubles, runs scored and slugging percentage, finished second in the batting race with a .331 average, and won a Gold Glove Award for his defensive play. On June 18 he bombed the Tigers with 3 HR, 10 RBI, and 16 total bases in one game.

Greco I selects:

1.08 OF Joe DiMaggio, 1936

DiMaggio hit 148 home runs in 3,360 at-bats at home, and in contrast, he hit 213 home runs in 3,461 at-bats on the road. His slugging percentage at home was .546, and on the road, it was .610. Oh, and he married Marilyn Monroe. She filed for divorce on grounds of mental cruelty 274 days after the wedding.

The DiMaggio's swing?

Rule clarification: Are we using a players 2nd season if in the first season they had a minimum number of AB's, for example, less than 20?

I am at home, waiting to pick, watching MLB network, and starting a game of OOTP.
Has anyone played both Baseball Mogul and OOTP? I've always played Mogul but there are a few things that bother me about it (notably the inability to trade draft picks and lack of a minor league FA pool).

I used to play both of these religiously. Do they still make mogul? To me, Mogul was always style while OOTP was substance.

I played Mogul a while ago. I have OOTP from 2009 and play with that every now and then when I get a specific idea. I agree on the style vs substance.

That's pretty much correct. I played Mogul 2010 and it felt a lot like the same game to me. The ability to go in history and run, say, the 1901 Superbas was nice, but that wore off quickly.OOTP was always a sabermetric guy's dream.

1.12 Carlton Fisk, C

In another memorable incident, pro-football and pro-baseball player Deion Sanders, then with the Yankees, hit a pop fly, and declined to run to first base, suspecting that the ball would be easily caught. Fisk yelled at Sanders to run the ball out and told Sanders during his next at-bat, "If you don't play it [the game] right, I'm going to kick your ### right here."

Need a few. This was my pick.

I considered him strongly when I picked **** Allen. I have a feeling that is going to be a very solid pick.

Hell - A number of us are on the road quite often. Maybe we can find you a co-owner to help things along (Kraft?) - when I am on the road, I usually have a printed sheet to go by and/or spreadsheet on my phone. GL either way and hope you can stay in.

1.14 - Darrell Elijah (Cy) Blanton, SP

Blanton was one of the mainstays of the Pittsburgh Pirates rotation in the mid 1930s. He pitched for the Albany Senators in 1934, being promoted to Pittsburgh to pitch one game. Earlier he pitched in the Piedmont League and the Western Association.[2]

In his 1935 rookie season he recorded 18 wins with 142 strikeouts and led the National League in earned run average (2.58) and shutouts (4).
My type of guy:
Blanton was known for his breaking pitches, one of which he named "Dewdrop" due to its lightning like drop when crossing the plate. Many close to him felt that he could have been a great pitcher if not for his fondness for alcohol.
The Philadelphia Phillies signed him to a contract in the hopes that a change of scenery would help him. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Blanton was a mere shadow of himself at this point in his career. Arm injuries and the fast life where taking their toll.

The best he could do with the Phillies was a 4-3 mark in his first season in 1940, followed by a miserable 6-13 in 1941. His 0-4 record in 1942 earned him a pink slip on June 12. Blanton tried to regain his old form with the PCL Hollywood Stars, going 9-9 in 1943 and 4-5 in 1944. But on March 27, 1945 he was suspended by the Hollywood Management for breaking training rules, having failed to get into shape since arriving at spring training.

By this time in life, Blanton's way had begun taking a toll on him. Amazingly, Cy got a letter from Uncle Sam, asking him to report for pre-induction tests. Of course he did not pass, and in fact was recommended by doctors to get more tests and treatment. Cy returned home to Oklahoma, where he was eventually admitted to the Central State Hospital in Norman on August 31. The painful end came on September 13, 1945, just 13 days after entering the hospital. He was just 37 years old.

3B Jimmy "Button" Williams

Williams put on one of the greatest rookie hitting displays in baseball history
Williams' final .355 was certainly excellent but it is a bit misleading. He began slowly at .213 after a dozen games and ended in a slight slump. For the greater portion of his rookie year he hit above .380.
It claimed Jimmy was a "legend" in his baseball "hometown" of Pueblo, Colorado, because of his early diamond exploits and the fact that he flattened the only man ever to knock out future boxing super champ, Jack Dempsey. "Fireman" Jim Flynn, himself a fabulous ring character of the era, who fought all the big name boxers into the 1920s, was also a Pueblo resident. Sometime around 1908, he became abusive to Williams during a saloon altercation and Williams gave Flynn "the worst beating of his entire career," quoted the Tribune from the Pueblo press.
and we always know the transitive property works

So there is a zero percent chance that I do any good in this thing, right?
Trosky is a decent pick
:excited:
FWIW, I had Trosky in the upper tier of hitters - only his position hurts as he is a 1B. Even so, he should rake IN THIS FORMAT
Seeing old WIS shtick in play again brings a tear to mah eye. :(
We should have an all time WIS Owners Draft. Not an easy choice at #1, as two past owners really brought a lot to the table in their brief time with us. While popular convention may go with the other, I have to go with:

1.1 Harrier. Haaarrrrr Sheets. The "original simfisher" - even when we were not yet simming. He was better than everyone, except that he wasnt. The reverence everyone gave to his "genius" and his rankings reminds me a bit of Mangenius' overstated abilities. Early success and nothing since. Oh, and there was the jail issue. :(
