*** OFFICIAL WIS XVI Draft Thread *** (3 Viewers)

Charlie Keller, OF yanksI had he and Murcer on tw short list for a while, was hoping to go a couple more rounds but once Murcer went, need an ok glove with decent range for CF.Still a number of yanks left to go and OF is still in demand so thought I best pull the trigger. Solid 6 hitter who seems to perform ok in the sims with a balance of ok OBP and a little pop.

Does anyone not have any players from the 16 that weren't active in 1903? (Angels, Astros, Brewers, Jays/Mariners, Expos, Mets, Padres, Royals, Rangers)...Does anyone have all 9 of those spots full? It'll be interesting to see if stocking up on the older franchises and punting some/most of the newer ones is a better or worse strategy than picking the newer ones first and taking lesser players from the older franchises. Hopefully we have someone at both extremes.
I've been pretty much ignoring franchises. I took Porter from the Royals because he was BPA regardless of franchise. I picked Ward from the Jays and it was probably my worst pick.

Because of his strength, Keller was dubbed "King Kong Keller", a nickname he never liked and seldom answered to.Despite his power and high batting average, Keller was the first Yankees player to strike out over 100 times in a single season, whiffing 101 times in 1946.

With Murcer and Keller going, did I overdraft Maris?
I had Keller and Murcer ranked very closely, Murcer's glove won out for me. I had them both ahead of Maris
Same here. Murcer a but more OBP and slightly better D, Keller a bit more pop. Murcer would have been a two hitter Keller will likely hit 6th, maybe 5thI'm hoping the power works for me with a strong xbh park

Sweated Greco taking this guy, can't let him go another round with yankee/OF slots still open on some teams.

Bobby Murcer, OF Yankees

Solid bat plus the CF glove I need
Murcer was fined $250 on June 30, 1973, by baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn for saying Kuhn didn't have the "guts" to stop Hall of Fame pitcher Gaylord Perry from throwing the spitball. That night he hit a two-run homer off Perry that put the Yankees ahead in a 7–2 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Murcer made his original comment about Kuhn after Perry beat New York the previous week, which ended the Yanks' eight-game winning streak. Kuhn said Murcer apologized in their meeting but Murcer refused to tell newsmen that he did and he "didn't sound too contrite". Murcer, who flung his right hand into the air when he rounded first after hitting the 'homer, said to reporters "I hit a hanging spitter."

For his career, Murcer hit Perry at a .232 clip with 2 home runs in 69 at bats. However, much of that low batting average was due to the 2 for 20 performance in the 1972 season, which caused Murcer's ire in the first place. Aside from the abysmal 1972 summer he had against Perry, who won the A.L. Cy Young Award that year, Murcer hit .286 against him.

Murcer had some fun with Gaylord; he once caught a fly for the last out of an inning and spit on the ball before tossing it to Perry. Another time he sent Perry a gallon of lard. Perry retaliated by having a mutual acquaintance cover his hand with grease before shaking hands with Murcer and saying "Gaylord says hello."

13.20 Elmer Steele RP Boston
That's the other red sox pitcher I was looking at web I took Shore. The raw numbers looked real nice helping out the pitching line averages, but in my park the number of hits and potentially xbhs had me go Shore.
When you took Shore I got real nervous because I had planned on taking one of the 2 and it was going to be a while before I picked.
Looks like one would have made it back to me, but I didn't want to chance it. Not really any replacements left at this point if I had missed out.
