OFFICIAL WIS XVII THREAD: Long Balls, Boy Bands, and Booming Economies (1 Viewer)

Made the playoffs, woohoo. Im going to lose in the 1st round tho. I have no stud pitchers.
X

1 have one starter that I can count on to at least do decent (Brown) and I can't pitch him until Game 3 because of fatigue issues. And if Gleaton or Hernandez isn't pitching in the pen, it becomes a game of Russian Roulette.

You took 7 of 12 in the regular season from me for good reasons. I'm just lucky to be here.

Ok stop with the Lou Holtzing over here. I'm the guy from the toughest division, the best record in our league and 2nd best overall who doesn't face the wildcard because it's from my damn division.

So, relax. Nerds.

At least you are facing a manager with limited playoff experience. :coffee:

Bogart had 8 of the 9 gold gloves in the AL.
Damn you Scott Erickson!!!

Lead league in Assists, Errors, Fielding Percentage, Double Plays

But you kind of have to have offense and pitching as well.

Good news: My team put on its clutch shoes in my series with hoos.

Bad news: Kevin Brown and Jose Rijo are filing OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) complaints as we speak. :kicksrock:

Good series, hoos. You get Mr. Round 25 Mark Gardner in the decisive Game 5 because Rijo and Brown are too busy working on a lawsuit due to "unsafe working conditions".

Catching up from the weekend - been camping and without cell except for a couple daytime trips to Town, hunting free WiFi. Good series DD. Looking to see who I will face after the result of game 5. Crazy series over there.

You got it, dont worry.
With Gardner, there's a 50/50 chance he'll either be brilliant or a complete and total loser. He was just brilliant in 3+ innings of relief in PM2 last night, so odds are...
I'll be hoping for a 32 inning 43-42 run barn burner tiring everyone on your respective rosters.

You kicked my ###, Koya. GL in the WS
Appreciated. Guys were well rested for bot yours and BMs series. Never know what will happen in a short series but was fortunate that my team came through. Definitely had some concern after BM took out Nomo in game one as a five gamer is really primed for anything goes.

Let's hope I can represet our league well in the Series and TOC!

Likewise. I think either one of us were screwed against Koya.

Besides, I helped contribute to Koya's success with the landmark Steve Finley/Jim Abbott for Tim Raines/Greg Hibbard (screw this guy for life) trade.
The trade really helped my regular season more than anything as Abbott ate a lot of innings and did ok with a 5 era.

Finleys been a little better than Raines but still disappponting but is a better lefty in a platoon at CF, although he's been great so far in the playoffs (as is his righty counterpart)

Very surprised I was able to get by in 5 games, my first trip to the final in the five of these I've been in :excited:
Good series, NV. Your pitching thoroughly shut my guys down.in your four wins.

Going to be an very interesting World Series ... AL bats vs NL arms. Will the old axiom that "good pitching always beats good hitting" come true?

NV on an great run, facing the 3 teams with the top regular season records in a row. 2 down. . . . .
I've really enjoyed the combination of steroid freaks and Coors field, at the start, I was mostly curious to see how many HR's McGwire could get to, but as the season wore on and IP/AB limits became a bit less of a concern, my team's been pretty successful since I trimmed down the starting rotation (Melido Perez was terrible and Benes was ok but I seemed to be 50/50 every time he started).

I don't know enough about the sim to know if I could have gone with a 3-man Guzman/Gooden/Dreifort rotation from the start and not totally destroyed them (Guzman and Dreifort both only pitched 180 actual IP), but with the breaks in the playoffs, it seems to be working pretty well now.

Also 10-0 win in game 1!

It's been a long road back but ill take it. M

Great series NV. After getting railed 10-0 and then losing a one run game to go down 2-0 it wasn't looking good.

Was down two runs in the 9th about to be down 3-0 in te series when the heart of my order saved my ###. Caminiti, Tartabull, Felix, HoJo and Hundley got consecutive hits to go from down 8-6 to up 10-8 and keep me in the series. Then a crazy 17-11 barnburner Coors style before a couple more traditional ballgames to close it out.

Third WS ring in four appearances, and hopefully this means I gots my groove back.

Great series once again NV.

Now, onto the next one! What's the theme?

Congrats Koya, definitely a great series, came down to whichever one of us figured out how to win a home game.
It was weird that way. I recall you mentioning something about doing better outside of Coors. Way to get to the series in that ball park too.

After getting the last pick in the draft I thought my drought would continue. Then a slow start to the season but my roster ended up nicely balanced with few stars but solid top to bottom. And Finley absolutely rocked in the series - MVP of the clincher.

Congrats, Koya -- you're the first three-time champion of the FBG WIS leegs
Thanks Doug (and Hoos).

There are a few two time winners, correct? You, JFranco, Kraft... I thought Sparty won two, but don't see it on the master list. Anyone else in four WS? I know Eephus was darn close to winning two, as he and I went 7 games way back when. Since my last WS win I don't think I had even made the playoffs. Hopefully I can sustain this because while it's fun regardless, when you are out of the running 50 games in it's just not the same. And I admit, after that long drought and then getting the very last pick I thought it was going to be another long season. Would be tough to figure out, but I wonder what draft slots have ended up in the WS through these.

Crazy to think we've been doing this for pushing a decade or so (didnt we decide it's been like 7-8 years?).

The way I've always reckoned it is that the first FBG baseball draft that eventually led to the WIS leagues was taking place in November-December 2004. That particular thread was later purged, but the subsequent draft thread from January 2005 -- the one where "simfishing" entered our vocabulary -- is still around.

So that's pretty much all of 2005 ... then a continuous run through 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and mid-way through 2013 so far. 2013 is our 9th calendar year of actual WIS leagues. And if you're inclined to counf the late-2004 All-Time MLB "for fun" draft (essentially a Tim-style draft that was meant to be judged via FFA vote) as sort of the Ur-draft, that gets us into a tenth calendar year.

Unreal. My wife wasn't even of legal age when this started! ####.

So, that original all time greatest MLB draft thread is gone? such good shtick there. I know I had A-Rod at SS and Griff Jr. in Center. Well, I think. We used the SIM in that one to "test" how good the teams were, correct? I used Memorial Stadium, Baltimore for that.

I actually recall sitting in my bedroom going over that draft and researching next picks. I had a LOT more time on my hands then, and have moved like 2-3 times since.

J Franco's ratings were pretty good overall, with a couple interesting quirks.

7 out of the 8 playoff teams were in his top ten overall, with Brady Marino ranked 16th as the last one. However, they were #4-10, as the top three missed out.

However of those top three, J Franco was making a very hard charge after a slow start to miss the WC by one game and Oso, in similar fashion, was 3 behind the WC (and Maddux was just a beast). The only huge miss was TU, who struggled big time, even though most of us thought he'd do very well, and was ranked better than anyone other than JF on the list.

Your two WS teams were ranked 9 and 10, respectively.

I miss that first draft, even if I melted down for some stupid reason (I forget what it was, but it was much easier for me to blow my stack back then...I was an angry young man in that time of my life). I remember people flipping out when I took Old Hoss Radbourn in the late teens.

I've only won one, but I'm also the only one from our group to win the Tournament of Champions. So that's like three IMO.

Congrats though, at least my team lost to the champs at the end of the day/season.

In late September we usually do one. have we ever done a 50s and 60s league? Korea to Vietnam? 1948-1964?
Not sure we have unless it was in the BT era. I really would like this idea.

I also wouldn't be sad if we bumped the next one up to, say, mid to late August? Yeah, I'm an addict.
Nah, that messes with fantasy foosball drafts. I say we aim for September at some point.
