Great for the Fever. First game looking like a team instead of players thrown together in a pick up game.

Somebody's always got to lose, but it sucks for the Mystics. They are a much better team than 0-11.

Hope to see more of this. Seems like Washington, Atlanta, and Dallas could all play in higher capacity arenas.

I don't pretend to know anything about this subject that Brink is talking about.

I'll just say the reaction on the WNBA subreddit seems overwhelmingly positive about her comments.

Alright, in the full context, I don't think that's too bad. Might not have used the word 'masculine' there, though. Yikes.
Being charitable, I think there's a good chance that she didn't mean it the way it comes off in writing. I imagine she was probably acknowledging two separate privileges she has in the area of general popularity/fan support - being a white player (as opposed to her black teammates) and being more feminine (as opposed to her teammates with other gender identities) - but just awkwardly seemed to combine things by the way she stated it.

I don't think you have to be charitable to understand her point. Its just that she's acknowledging out loud what most people are uncomfortable discussing.

I'll give an example - when I hosted a watch party for the NCAA final four women's volleyball tournament last year (my alma Wisconsin is a perineal powerhouse and made the final four), guess what most of the guys are all focused on? Of course I get it, but is that hard for a group of grown men to watch these incredible athletes (who are less than half our age) play their sport without constant comments about their sexual appearance? These athletes aren't dressed up for a photo shoot, they're competing at the highest level of their game and yet many spectators can't help but focus on the masculine features and sexuality of the athletes.
a what now?
Taint quite spelled right

Short rotation for the Fever. Caitlin played 39 of the 40 minutes.
They should get Temi Fagbenle back soon. May not necessarily help reduce Clark's minutes, but help the depth overall. Temi just signed this year, but gives them some much needed size and veteran presence.

She's won titles all over the world, including the WNBA, which she hasn't played in since 2019. Still getting used to how much international ball they play. A ton do in the off-season (the 3x3 thing upcoming is give them a way to make some money in the US during the off-season). I'm assuming Temi wanted to spend a couple years closer to home, but I'm not sure. I wasn't watching during the Covid year, but I'd guess that jacked some things up.

Another friendly reminder.......WNBA League Pass.....$35.
You don't have to miss a single minute of women competing for life's ultimate prize (Walton was the best).

Roughly 1/50th of what it costs to watch every NFL game.

Not exactly apples to apples.

Noble effort here, buddy, but you can stop trying to make fetch happen.

And btw, tonight, Aaliyah Edwards is reminding people that she's a big part of that exciting rookie class too.
Haha, yep, it's a cute narrative for some to say that games are moved to bigger arenas to see the rookie class, but, no, it is happening because people want to see Caitlan Clark. The attendance numbers of last night's game and how quickly the game sold out tells the tale.

An 0-9 team played in front of 10,000 people against Chicago without Caitlin Clark. Normal capacity for their home arena is 4200. Sounds like more than a cute narrative.

Maybe - but Clark drew double that, the next night.

Isn't Reese originally from Baltimore>. That would be a more logical explanation for that crowd than some mythical "rookie class" - because every game includes part of the "rookie class".

Sure - there could be all kinds of explanations. This was the first time in 5 years that they moved to the bigger arena and drew crowds that were 2.5x and 5x bigger than their normal capacity. That seems like fantastic news for the league. Drawing 10K fans on a Thursday night to a winless team is pretty impressive.

Away attendance figures this season:

Indiana Fever16,0327112,2248,91020,333
Los Angeles Sparks11,104.25444,4177,91116,013

Atlanta Dream6,099.33318,2983,84710,251
Las Vegas Aces5,891.67317,6754,0157,409

Average attendance at all games: 9,212
Average attendance at Fever games: 16,256

And if you remove Away games at Indiana (NY, Connecticut, LA, Seattle, Chicago) - LA remains in 2nd, but their average drops to 9468.

Attendance is up overall - which is good. But there is a definite spike.

I could be wrong but I very seriously doubt there was a huge Baltimore crowd.

Just caught the quick highlight clip for Caitlin - impressive.

Those passes are incredible.

She is still shooting too many off balance 3s but she makes a lot of them. I would like to see her take better/more squared up attempts but maybe she’s comfortable drifting.

Still, those passes tho….:chefskiss:

The attendance growth year over year is fantastic.

However, I am a bit surprised that even with so much incredible press and hype, the league is still averaging under 10k. They are effectively averaging the same numbers they did back in the first 6 seasons of the league.

As always, we need time to figure out what is happening. If this is the start of a growth profile that will continue in years to come, that is very positive.

If instead this spike is momentary and only lasts a year or two with no further growth, the league won't be any better off than it has been during various times in the leagues history.

I still have no guesses where this ends up.

And to give this some perspective. With less than 1/100th the hype and attention the WNBA is enjoying, the NWSL averaged 10,432 last season.

Careful GB. The Red Lobster CEO is also a big WNBA fan.

This seems like a colossal mistake but I’m happy she will get the time off.

Yup. Colossal might even be an understatement.

This seems like a colossal mistake but I’m happy she will get the time off.
She certainly needs it. But her ommision is utter horse****.

That’s all I am gonna say.

Drawing record crowds in the WNBA, coming off an historical college career.

This reeks of BS.

Again not saying anymore.

I'm not watching regardless....but they took another PG who has been out with a foot injury since OCTOBER and hasn't played yet this season.

I'm sure there will be outrage but was there anyone else picked that didn't go to camp.

CC did not go to the USA camp because of final four

I'm generally asking I don't know

Any chance they reconsider because of public perception? Or any injury?
Injury, absolutely. I think she is already an alternate.

But changing based on public perception would be nuts. That would mean telling another player who was already picked for the Olympics that she can't now go. That would be utter BS and probably make things worse. i say this only if the roster is official. If not official, they can do what ever they want.

I’ll actually say I don’t disagree with leaving her off of the team. It’s pretty clear that the current WNBA’s style of play is centered around the Bigs and not well suited to Clark’s style of play. Most players would have to learn to make adjustments to mesh well with her. IMO, it would ultimately lead to better teams overall, but it also would require a lot of time and effort. And Clark has not been able to adjust her game enough yet to mesh really well with the WNBA’s style of play.

So if we’re talking about putting together a team that gives the US the best chance to win gold, with the limited time they’ll have to practice together, then Clark probably isn’t the best choice for them. Would it be awesome to see Clark paired with actual athletic Bigs playing a great high low game and putting teams in binds with pick and rolls? Of course, but those Bigs aren’t changing up their games and trying to learn new play styles/skill sets just to play with Clark in the Olympics.

Yeah, I think this is fine from a team perspective, there is precedent for earning your place, etc.

But at the end of it all, this is a business, with a lot of money on the table.

Whoever is last in minutes for the US team? That person, whoever it is. It's better for the sport if THAT person goes home, and Clark gets the last spot. It could be MUCH better for the sport. Who knows, she could go there and pull a Steph Curry in the finals, and now she's basketball Messi.

She should be on the team.

Why would the bigs need to make adjustments? It seems like a great passing/great shooting guard is the perfect paring for strong bigs. At Iowa they had a good big and her and Clark paired up amazingly well.

Having Clark out there would make it much more difficult for teams to double those bigs down low, and she can get the ball into them better than anyone.

10,000 in an arena that holds around 20,000 vs selling out the arena of 20,000 in 30 minutes (and who knows how many it could have been had the capacity been higher).

Yeah, that's not close. It's simple math, really.

The problem if she is on the team is clear: certain veterans would likely cry like 1-year olds and freeze her out in the games and embarrass us at the Olympics, much like Isiah had the All-Stars do to Jordan early in his NBA career. Clark will have a great chance to make it the next time and hopefully some of the bitter curmugeons will be retired and/or less weepy by then.

From what I have watched, the bigs rely on size and physicality. They clog up the lane and don’t move great without the ball. Clark isn’t great just because she can splash 3s, she is excellent penetrating into the paint and either finishing or making the great pass to an open teammate. With bigs clogging up the paint, it takes away a big element to her game.

Jordan paid Isiah back later, with interest, for that when he was left off the original Dream Team.

Did somebody in here say they were -1200 to win it? Figured it would be 2500. Who could even keep it within 20 against these women?

I do not know if she is one of the best 12 women for the Olympic team but what I do know is it appears the WNBA hates money. .
Are we sure it was the WNBA's choice? I thought the team was chosen by a committee that was not related to the WNBA (I may be wrong about this)

Oh this is a good point. I truly have no idea who the Olympic committee is. For the men Grant Hill makes the call and he’s not in an NBA org so you are probably right.

WNBA players and franchises : We want to grow our game and should make more money.

Clark and all these rookies show up.

WNBA Players and franchises : Not like that!

I have no idea either. I would assume it's like other sports and it's an Olympic committee not tied to any professional League.

So I wouldn't think it's the WNBA's call, nor is it the WNBA losing out on money. But again I don't know.

But that Olympic roster is absolutely stacked. I know nobody is interested in that, apparently. "That PG" that hasn't played yet this season is a two-time world champion and plays beautifully with the greatest player in the world.

And it would be horrible for Clark. Think of all she's going through going straight from college to learning a new league to play with new teammates. She literally just now had a chance to practice with those teammates.

Olympics start in a few weeks.

She could either go through this whole ringer all over again, or she could get a month off to practice with her teammates.

Sometimes I wonder what everybody's long-term plan here is.

At some point loving Caitlin and hating everything else about women's basketball is not going to work out very well.

Maybe she could start a Caitlin Globetrotters tour and sell out arenas, but the far more likely scenario is that she's going to need to spend her career playing against the best players in the world in the WNBA. (Which is exactly what she's been dreaming of doing her whole life)

It seems like a lot of people haven't realized that yet.

Not directed to anyone in particular. Just the general pro-Caitlin, yet anti-WNBAvibe that I sense (which of course I could be wrong about).

I mean it makes sense for other types of rabid fan bases.

If a Taylor Swift fan says Taylor is the best and every other musician in the world sucks, that's fine. Taylor can play an arena by herself.

But this is a team sport where opponents and teammates are an unfortunate necessity.

If you say something like "Patrick Mahomes is amazing, but the NFL is a worthless league full of worthless players. There's no reason to care about that League other than Mahomes."

At some point that starts to sound ridiculous and just not make much sense. And if you really follow that logic you just stop watching the NFL because why would you want to watch Mahomes play against the worthless players.

Out of curiosity, why does basketball use a committee to choose a national team instead of letting the coach choose like soccer does?

I don’t watch much women’s basketball so my default assumption is that the Olympic committee or whoever makes these decisions probably understands the process better than I do.

At some point loving Caitlin and hating everything else about women's basketball is not going to work out very well.
Meh, there's really not that many of them, and they are just really noisy at the moment. They'll be bent about something else in a week.
Thank you for that.
Sorry to bring negativity to this beautiful moment.

On a proper positive note, I had customer today randomly ask if I ever do anything for fun or if I just work all the time.

Mind you, this is a 65 year old man. Construction worker. Not sure why, but I said actually lately I've been having a blast watching the WNBA.

He lit up. He's like "man did you see that last night, it was awesome, and the crowd.........." and on and on.
Then he said every league just needed the right stars at some point.

It was awesome. It might really be happening.
