First round of comments received from my German buddy, who I'll call "Der Kaiser" (to be read with a Col. Klink accent):

To my comments:My key arguments for good or bad picks are always:Will they play in key positions?Do they have a special function in their teams?Are they injury-prone?Are their replacements for them?Will they be able to score if the chance comes up?Judging the squads:Boubucarow: Very erratic. Many good and many bad picks. I give it a C.Very good:Best possible first pick: David Villa - in sensational form, stable, in thebest team. Goals will come flowing to him.Buffon - even better pick - he is arguably the best goalkeeper and in ateam that plays defense all the time. Whitewashes are a given thing forItaly.Novakovic - steal in Rd. 12, will play all the games, a pure natural goalscorer, in great form, scored in all the test games. Will also do in theWC.Team has very good chance to advance in weakest group.Good:Lugano and Luderio from Uruguay - very good playersNovakovic - he will score a lot for Slovakia. If they score he will.Zigic - will score for SerbiaMark van Bommel - will play for a good team, scores quite regularly, wellpicked at this position.Nicolas Loderio - very good pick in Rd. 10Mediocre:Bruno Alves from Portugal - good player not a great player, maybe pickedtoo high for a defensemanStojkovic - good player but taken a little bit high.Riveros - good choice, stable player in an offensive team with good chanceto reach the second round in a weak group. But picked too high in round 7!Lugano - good stable defenseman, quite small, team has a good chance toadvance in weak group. Picked too high in Rd.8.Christian Poulsen - experienced player, big underachiever in Torino, butplays infront of a stable defense, no goal scoring ability. But o.k. atthis position.Zigic - good player. o.k. for this positon, not a great scorer in a teamwere Pantelic and the midfielders score more.Caceres - o.k at this position - mediocre player in a relatively gooddefense. Team is in a weak group, but is generally quite offensive,therefore problems and goals against can occurr quite regularly.Godin - mediocre, average man in average defense in average team, whichstill could sneak out of Groupe A. At this position just acceptable.Bad pick:Lukas Podolski - terrible at this position, even when he will have a muchbetter tournament then his season he is not a world class player, thereforepicked too high by far (comment from a German). There are much bettergoalscorers available at this position!Simao Sabrosa - None of the journalists and preview magazines in Europe istalking about him. Why at this high position? He was picked far too highfor a team that never scores not even with one of the best forwards in theworld. Only the fact that Nani left the game is probably giving him thechance to play! Portugal is favored to not make the second round in thegroup of death, especially if Drogba plays in the first game!Gregory van der Wiel - picked much too high, very mediocre player, one ofthe few weaknesses in the Dutch team. Only advantage he is in the Dutchteam which has excellent chance of going far!Taiwo - pick too high, Nigeria has traditionally weak defenses - no changethis yr. He is at best internationally mediocre.Stojkovic - Bad pick, there were much better goalkeepers available, didn'teven make his own club team Wigan after he failed in Lisbon as well.Emana - Even at this position I think there would have been better playersavailable.Cletius Maximus: Many risky picks with players that probably won't bestarting. He might have problems getting 11 players for the game days. Badpicks in the top rounds. Very good picks in the middle rounds. CVery good picks:Terry - at this position he is a steal. he will play is in a very good teamthat will go far and has something to proove.Badstuber - great pick at this low position - he will be a young star. hewill start on the left defensive position (no better players available) andwill be first replacement for the interior linesmen. So, he will alwaysplay in a team that might get far. Tall player with good headball, greatfree kicker and scores quite regularlyMueller - Excellent at this position. if not starting he will always comein and soon claim his position. In excellent form. has a great midfieldaround him that will create lots of scoring chances.he is quick, highlyeffective and extremely goal-hungry.Good pick:Maicon, is a world class player but he is a defenseman - he was picked toohigh. he can't give enough impact to Cletius' squad. it's better to take MFor ST at this position, with eveything that's still available.Neuer - underrated excellent goalkeeper with typical German skillset. Maybepicked a little bit high, but he will positively surpriseSoerensen is a very stable goalkeeper behind a good defenseIniesta - he can make a great impact and can easily be a very good pick buthe needs to be fit and play!, which is not a given thing in this team.Felipe Melo - although no superstar he is a very reliable player who willplay a lot in a very good team.Ramires - dito, more offensive than Melo, so might have scoring opps.Van Bommel - still an important holding midfielder for a very good team. Hewill play a lot and scores occasionally.Bocanegra - USA is underestimated and Bocanegra one of the better players.might surprise a lot of experts. At this Round good pick.Mediocre pick:I like de Rossi but still think Cletius picked too high. There are betterplayers in his position. Additionally Italy is traditionally a low scoringteam and he will not add a lot to it.Joe Cole is better than most judge him at the moment, but Cletius pickedhim too high, if their are still defensemen of better teams like Puyol orLucio are available.Milijas - mediocre holding midfielder with a strong shot. Has a chance toadvance with his team. Maybe a little bit high pick. Better midfieldersavailable.Juarez - mediocre player in mediocre defense. Team has chance to advance inweak group. o.k at this position.Bad pick:Diego Milito is a superstar. In almost any other team he would be animmediate starter. Maradona already told everyone, that he is No. 4 behindMessi, Higuain & Aguero. When does Cletius think he will play in a teamwith only one or two forwards?Santa Cruz - not a bad player, but not in form and picked too high,especially if his own team mate Lucas Barrios who is a strong scorer isstill available.Otamendi - I wouldn't have picked him at this relatively high position. Heis Internationally very unexperienced and plays in a comparably weakdefense in an generally offensive team. May goals against will be theresult.Mphela - There are better players available even at this position. Mphelawas in arguably the weakest team not in the Starting 11. Thanks Kaiser - interesting comments. I think der Kaiser's Bayern Munich bias is coming through here - in his obvious personal hatred for Podolski, who flamed out in Munich, and Diego Milito, who ended the Bavarians' dream run in the final of the Champions League. Looking forward to seeing Die Mannschaft in action this afternoon.

Higuain and Muntari were disappointments, but not a bad day for team T-Bonz.

Damn... Piotr Trochowski didn't even see the ptich. I thought he was a starter for them. He played in 9 WC qualifiers and isn't hurt AFAIK.

Guess I don't know enough about the German players or team.

if he was on form, he'd have had 3 or 4 goals. he wasn't good except for that one play. however it will probably keep him in the lineup for a while.
