Porcello optioned to Toledo. I'm wondering who will take his spot in the rotation? Bonine or Thomas until he gets a start or two down in Toledo?
I was thinking Gonzalez.
Sat, 6/19 D-backs L 5-6 Jackson (4-6) Porcello (4-7) Sun, 6/20 D-backs W 3-1 Scherzer (4-6) Kennedy (3-5)

Tue, 6/22 at Mets 7:10p Verlander (8-4) Niese (4-2)

Wed, 6/23 at Mets 7:10p Bonderman (3-4) Dickey (5-0)

Thu, 6/24 at Mets 7:10p Galarraga (2-1) Takahashi (6-2)

Fri, 6/25 at Braves 7:35p

With the off day today they should be able to skip Porcello's spot Friday with Scherzer pitching on his usual 5th day.

After that I don't know.

"The Toledo Blade reported Sunday that reliever Jay Sborz was called up by the Tigers. He's 1-1 with a 3.04 ERA and 15 saves in 24 appearances this season for the Mud Hens."

"Yeah, but he won't be in uniform." — Tigers manager Jim Leyland, when asked whether his newly signed son, C Patrick Leyland, Detroit's eighth-round draft choice, would be up with the club in September. The young Leyland is beginning his pro career with the Tigers' rookie-level Gulf Coast League team.

It be cool if Leyland could coach his kid at the big show

Spork was really bad along with everyone else tonight. Luckily there were only 75 people in the stands to see that stinker.

Wow, the Tigers lineup is really putrid when they can't use a DH and have to bat the pitcher.

Laird batting second during the series opener vs the Mets

That was a tough loss today. They finally get a run, and Zumaya is almost out of the 7th before Chipper hit his HR

Even then, the Tigers battle back and had a chance. The call 3rd strike on Damon to end the game was very Jim Joyce-esque. That ball was not even close to being a strike - way outside. JV needs to prevent a sweep tomorrow. I am just hoping Leyland doesn't trot out one of his "let's rest all our decent hitters" on Sunday afternoon lineup where even if JV pitches well he will get no run support.

Meanwhile, here come the White Sox....

That 3rd strike call was the worst call of the season that I've seen. It was socceresque, absolutely horrid. This team can't beat good teams even when they play a decent game. Why Lloyd McClendon is still employed is beyond me, DD needs to do that firing and soon.

I was saying over the offseason that they needed to fire Lloyd so they could improve their hitting much like replacing Hernandez with Knapp helped the pitching staff. Obviously Leyland is loyal and doesn't want to can one of his loyal buddies so it is up to DD. Last off season they could have simply moved Lloyd from hitting coach to 1B coach, and allowed him to stay on staff while getting someone else to work with the hitters. Unfortunately, I just don't see anything happening to Lloyd during this season.Tigers really need to get out of the NL parks so they can add the DH back into the lineup.

• The matchups for the Tigers series: Francisco Liriano vs. Jeremy Bonderman (Monday); Blackburn vs. Armando Galarraga (Tuesday); and Kevin Slowey vs. Andy Oliver (Wednesday).

Get your popcorn ready for this series. I thinking its worth paying stubhub prices for tickets to see the Liriano vs Bonderman game. I think the standing room only tickets at 22.00 are even sold out.

I like the match-up on Tuesday, but not the other two. Liriano owns the Tigers, even when his arm is broken.

Thought this was an interesting read as it lays out some of the decisions that will have to be made during the offseason:

Tom Gage: Tigers Insider

Tigers could make changes at four positions, including pitcher, for 2011

Detroit -- Next year.

Nearly halfway through this year, let's talk about next. It's never too early.

That's not to say the Tigers aren't going anywhere this year. They might. They very well could. There is more than a half-season left.

But even if they do make some noise this season, what will they look like next? Possibly a lot different.

They could have a new catcher, new shortstop, new third baseman, new outfielder, and a couple of new starting pitchers. Let's review the status of each position.

Catcher -- Alex Avila will be back, but Gerald Laird can be a free agent. He's making $3.95 million this year and still has a chance to interest the Tigers in bringing him back, but it's doubtful they would commit for more than a season to him -- and at this point, even that is far from likely.

First base -- Miguel Cabrera will be in the second season next year of the most lucrative portion of his contract. He moved up from $15 million to $20 million this season -- and stays at $20 million next year.

• Second base -- There's no reason to think it won't be Carlos Guillen again at $13 million. But 2011 is the last year of his contract.

• Shortstop -- A position that will have to be addressed. The Tigers have never believed that Ramon Santiago is an everyday player and the jury will remain out about Danny Worth for quite a while.

• Third base -- This could be the most interesting, and most talked about, uncertainty throughout the rest of this year and into the offseason -- unless, that is, the Tigers make it a moot point sooner than that.

Brandon Inge is in the final year of his contract at $6.6 million. He's basically been at that salary for three years, bumping up from $6.2 million in 2008 to $6.3 million last year. Small increments, in other words.

What if the Tigers were to offer him a two-year extension for $14.5 million right now? Would he be interested? He'd have to be. But would they be interested in such a contract? Possibly.

For one thing, $7 million for 2011 and $7.5 million for 2012 wouldn't break the bank, and the Tiges know full well what they would be getting: Outstanding defense, but a confusing hitter who's capable of impressive power, yet also capable of frustrating slumps.

It doesn't look like a strong upcoming field of free-agent third basemen -- in fact, not strong at all -- so the chances of Inge returning are enhanced by that. But there are trade possibilities as well.

At this point, however, it seems marginally more likely than not that Inge will remain a Tiger.

Outfield

Johnny Damon will probably move on to another team. What he does in the second half could change that, but no matter what he contributes, it seems unlikely at this point -- considering his base of $8 million -- that he would be back.

Austin Jackson and Brennan Boesch still will be in the infancy of their major league careers, of course, so no changes there.

Magglio Ordonez 's option for next year will kick in (unceremoniously for a change) in the second half. But it's for $15 million instead of the $18 million he's making this year. It's also the last option year of his contract.

Pitching

Jeremy Bonderman , at $12.5 million, is in the final year of his contract, and while he's been pitching well, he's won only three games. This is a future that's even tougher to call than Inge's.

Neither Max Scherzer nor Armando Galarraga is signed for 2011, either. But neither one can be a free agent.

Justin Verlander , meanwhile, starts taking huge salary leaps: Up from $6.75 million this year to $12.75 million next year, en route to $20 million in 2012 and for the two years after that, as well.

By the numbers

Twins' career batting averages vs. the Tigers

.391 -- Denard Span

.338 -- Joe Mauer

.318 -- Justin Morneau

.300 -- Delmon Young

.291 -- Jim Thome

.289 -- Jason Kubel

.260 -- Michael Cuddyer

Quotable

"He pitched a great ballgame. He basically overmatched us. The quality of his stuff was outstanding. He just threw fastballs. He beat us with fastballs all night. That was his pitch."

-- Rick Sweet , Louisville manager, commenting about Rick Porcello's first start for Toledo on Thursday night.

2011:

Get an outfielder - Push hard for Werth and if you don't get him go after someone on the next tier down.

Get a SP - Push hard for Cliff Lee and if you don't get him go after someone on the next tier down.

Should be able to get one of those two.

Re-sign Inge and Bonderman to one year deals.

Move Maggs to DH once outfielder is signed. Start new OFer next to Boesch and Jackson.

Sign shortstop to split duties with Ramon. Bat them ninth.

Give Avila the every day catcher job. Go find a new backup and put Laird to pasture.

Rotation - Verlander, Scherzer, Porcello, Bonderman, Cliff Lee or other FA

Bullpen - Bring up Schlereth and let Bonine go.

If Detroit could snag one of Lee or Werth, they'd contend for the title.

Yikes. That didn't look good at all. Zumaya down in a heap clutching his elbow after a pitch. In serious pain.
I feel bad for the guy, he's just the type of guy we all root for and he just can't stay healthy. Looking at that I can't imagine he'll be back before this time next year, at the earliest.

And then he'll just get hurt again. I feel bad for the guy but was thinking a few weeks ago that he would get hurt at some point. He always does - and fluky injuries at that. Maybe Schlereth gets his chance now.

2011:Bullpen - Bring up Schlereth and let Bonine go.
Bonine is awesome, you can drop a number of others first. Bonine can spot start and he has been terrific this year. Agree on Lee or Werth, they definitely need to add an OFer next year. With a few very good SP prospects coming up (Oliver/Turner/Crosby) Bonderman might not be back if they acquire a vet SP of any kind. But the pitching looks good to great going forward, the problem is going to be the bats. They have good hitters like Sizemore and Ryan Strieby in the system and a whole bunch of junk and guys like Casper Wells and Wilkin Ramirez who have potential, but have trouble living up to it. Too bad about Zumaya but I can't think anyone would be surprised he's gone. Perry and Coke are great options but they may have to lean more on Bonine or make a trade for a guy who can pitch in the 7th or 8th. Those guys usually don't cost a whole lot but we'll see how it goes. Leyland really depended on Zumaya and he just doesn't trust Perry yet which might become a real problem. If Perry blows up or is used incorrectly, this bullpen could get ####ty pretty fast.

Galarraga deserved better. He had Punto struck out in the 4th and the ump gave him the squeeze. Mags played both the Morneau blloop into a hit and the Span liner into a triple. I know it's hindsight, but why not Damon in left, Boesch in right and Mags DH for a bit?

I still haven't gotten over the Jim Joyce debacle, btw.

Whats the word on Iorg at SS in the minors? he readyto come up and play the spot or is SS gonna be a trouble spot still next season?
Dlugach is actually probably their best minor league SS this year, and his hitting is pretty mediocre and his defense has been terrible. They are definitely going to have to look outside the organization.

They need to send Ni down and bring up Schlereth. Ni is getting beaten like a drum lately. Time to find another lefty option.

Iorg is playing like garbage in the minors so there is no way he is coming up, or would be any assistance to the Tigers this year (or likely in future years it seems). Unfortunately, we are stuck with what we have at SS unless something really unforeseeable happens.

Heading to the game on Saturday night. Looks like the Tigers miss Felix (since he starts today) for the Sea series but get Cliff Lee on 4th of July.

Yup.Date Opponent Time Probable Pitcher Opposing Pitcher Wed, 6/30 at Twins 1:10p Oliver (0-1) Slowey (7-5) Fri, 7/2 Mariners 7:05p Scherzer (4-6) Fister (3-3) Sat, 7/3 Mariners 7:05p Verlander (9-5) Vargas (6-3) Sun, 7/4 Mariners 1:05p Bonderman (4-5) Lee (7-3)

I get they are a half game out of first, but this team will not suck me in again this year.
They do have the appearance of another "tease" team I would agree. The worst part is this is the one sport of the major 4 that you can't get away with it since only 8 instead of 12 or 16 teams make it to the playoffs. Oh well.

Personally, I like this team. They're going to look great in the White Sox rear view mirror.
If the White Sox win this division Ozzie should be Manager Of The Year. And to think some short-sighted White Sox fans were calling for his firing just a short time ago. :goodposting:

After the crap he pulled about his kid getting drafted, I still want him gone
Good luck doing that if they make first place. You're better off if the White Sox finish 3rd, that should get him canned. :bag:

Good call.Really like what I'm seeing from Scherzer tonight. Everything is down, slider is biting and he is dialing up the fastball to 97 with control. I'm not sure this guy will ever be consistent, but I think he can be a very solid #3 who can give you seven or eight outstanding performances a year. Nice to be back home, this team is horrible on the road.

I don't really understand bringing in Coke here over Schlereth.

I'm leaning towards giving Leyland the benefit of the doubt but from here it doesn't seem to make sense.

I just came in here to write this. WTF you use Coke who is 10th in the AL in appearances and is now your set-up guy, with a 7-1 lead in the 9th? ####### stupid.

Perry looking good and the top six and even Inge are getting hot. Would be nice if there were some consistency here but I do like what I see from this team most of the time.

I think Porcello is going to be the one key player down the stretch. If he can get over the sophomore hump and itch to his potential, I like their chances.

Dontrelle was given his walking papers from the D'Backs, not sure if he'll ever be back. I feel genuinely bad for the guy.
