***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (2 Viewers)

Verlander has pitched 2 beauties, but won't have any wins to show for it.
He's gonna have a loss to show for it, complete meltdown.
Never should have faced Longoria. I'm guessing the wind was keeping Jim from lighting his Marlboro and he was more focused on getting that done than being a head coach.
:lmao: A hardcore Tiger-fan bud of mine constantly hammers Leyland for not caring about anything except getting his smoke on.

Valverde vs Longoria might have ended worse and based on past experience there was no reason to think Verlander wouldn't have gotten out of that jam. What you do there is bring in Benoit, but Leyland would have never done that because Valverde is his closer.

Regardless of the advantage of hind sight, I think pulling him before he did would have been a mistake.

I often kill Leyland for his in-game management, but not this time.

See if Miggy and Prince got another rally in them...

Yeah I'd have left him in for sure, he's your best chance and probably the best pitcher in the franchise's history.Funny because I'm not sure what motivates Verlander besides winning a championship, I think after today he'll have something to push him when he needs it. Tigers were like 82 or 83 and zero when leading after the 8th last year. Already blew two leads this year, not liking that. But we move on, it's a long season and we won two in similar fashion already so it evens out.

I was at the game..Verlander threw way too many sliders and curves in the dirt in the 9th...just blow them away in the late innings. JV was hitting 98 on his fastball. Throw fastball until they can hit it!

Thought I read Verlander stating that after the first hit, he actually got away from what had been working and starting coming with pure heat ...and got burned for it. But that again gets back managing - someone spotting all that and going out to remind JV to stay with what worked for 8 innings.I wonder if leaving him in was an overreaction to the first game where he was pulled after 8 and Valverde gave away a couple.

JV was only at 80 pitches after 8 innings..he was 105 after 8 on opening day. Plus he was not tired, still hitting 98 mph. Just one of those days.

Oh, that's right. By the time I had a chance to check on the game on-line, he was already in trouble and at 100 pitches. Leaving him at with 80 pitches would have been an easy decision. And - wow - that's so dominating. One hit, only 80 pitches.

Write it off as a freak happening. And kudos to Leyland for leaving him in as long as he did, giving JV a chance to dig himself out of the hole he'd created. I like that, it shows you believe in your guys.

2 for 2 on series wins, always like to see that.
Yeah, taking five out of six to open the season against those two teams is good stuff. Should have won yesterday, should have lost Sunday. It all evens out.Smyly looked good today, just threw way too many pitches in that first inning. Getting out of that jam by striking out Zobrist and Rodriguez showed us something though. For all the talk about the Tampa pitching youth and the constant stream there, Tigers oldest starter is Verlander who is 29.

Tigers have a lot of guys in that 27-29 year old sweet spot. (Boesch celebrated turning 27 with his 4 RBIs today.)So Detroit's starting pitchers to date: No wins. :P

I'm gonna say Scherzer notches one tomorrow despite how bad he looked last week and the fact that I expect him to give up three runs through six.

I like the decision the second time better than the first. At least let Justin go into the ninth unless he is at 120.

--2B Brandon Inge is eligible to come off the disabled list and join Detroit in Chicago on Saturday, but that move was "pending" entering the weekend, according to manager Jim Leyland. "He may need some more at-bats, he may not be ready," Leyland said of Inge, who was 1-for-6 after two games of a projected three-game rehab assignment. Inge is coming off a strained groin, and when he returns will primarily play second base against left-handed pitchers.

looks like the tigers are close to getting more help

I hate all your Delmon Young and Inge updates. <_<

:goodposting: But no win. As has been pointed out, Peavy always butt####s the Tigers.

Are the boys hitting into a lot of double plays, or does it just seem that way? I'd like them to stop.
That was a problem last year and will even be worse this year. Tigers have to be the slowest team in baseball. Probably the two biggest weaknesses on this team is team speed and some holes on defense (which is somewhat related to the first). If Detroit can dominate teams with strong pitching and hitting, it is no big deal. But in a tight series, it is those little things that make the difference. Getting that extra base, staying out of double-plays, chasing down that fly ball.

I hated Inge before it was cool to hate Inge.
When will it be cool to hate Raburn?
ool
If Raburn hit like he did two years ago, or especially like he did the end of last year, I would be happy with him. But unfortunately, he is looking like that .200 hitter he was for most of last year. You can't count on a hot streak at the end of the year to make up for an otherwise crappy season. He needs to get some consistency, otherwise he needs to go. At this point, Inge is an upgrade.

Has he ever hit before July? And my frustrations have much less to do with his bat and much more to do with his abysmal defense.

Nuances of the game - I was reading in the Chicago Tribune this a.m. about how, shortly after DY's home run in the 7th, De Aza called over to Viciedo and suggested he move over several steps. Viciedo moves ...then makes a diving grab on Dirks to save two runs. That, plus the flashy double play in the eighth, might have cost the Tigers the win.

Sox fans already griping about Dunn following his four-K performance.
