I really hate the All Star break.
I love watching the game though so it's a small price to pay. I didn't realize the break goes through Thursday though. Is that new this year? Traditionally there has just been a day off on Monday and another on Wednesday before games started up again on Thursday.

See I don't like any of the festivities - including the game. So I really hate it.I agree with you about Thursday. Does everyone have that off?

Valverde has been a lot better than I'd thought he'd be thus far. That splitter has a lot more bite than it has over the past few years IMO, the bottom just drops outta the thing about two feet from the plate.

Yes, it's nice after Rodney & Jones to have a guy in there that rarely makes you sweat. Antics aside, the guy can pitch.

After that they have 23 straight games vs the Rays, Red Sux, White Sux, Angels and Yankees (so 30 straight games vs winning teams). If they are in first place on August 20th, they are gonna stay there. The September schedule is not very difficult outside the 12 games with the Twins and White Sox. Lots of KC, Indians and Orioles.

Yeah, because KC is a pushover for this team in September...

Tigers: Rebuilding on the fly

Minneapolis Star & Tribune

The Tigers have the least to lose. After saying goodbye to Curtis Granderson and Placido Polanco, this was supposed to be a transition year. Eight Tigers have made their major league debuts, including outfielders Austin Jackson and Brennan Boesch.

Detroit is reportedly searching the trade market for relief pitching after losing Joel Zumaya because of a broken elbow, but new closer Jose Valverde has a 0.92 ERA and 19 consecutive saves. Fellow All-Stars Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera are showing no signs of slowing.

"We've got to play better on the road in the second half, and we've got to play better in our division," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

"If we do that, we'll be in the hunt. But it's not going to be a day at the beach."

The key for Detroit is 21-year-old righthander Rick Porcello. Like Chicago second baseman Gordon Beckham, another top rookie last season, Porcello is going through a sophomore slump.

Porcello is 4-7 with a 6.14 ERA, but he tossed seven shutout innings for Class AAA Toledo last weekend and will return for Saturday's doubleheader in Cleveland.

"We're hoping Rick Porcello can come back and be very successful in the second half," Leyland said. "We need him."

The future is extremely bright for the Tigers. With all the money that comes off the books next year and all the young players they have - they are set up to be very good for a long time.Porcello is extremely important, though. A big three of Verlander, Scherzer and Porcello would be awesome.

Interesting factoid today during the broadcast:

Tigers are the 5th youngest team in baseball (Indians, Dbags, Pirates, Marlins)

Verlander demonstrated why he was an ace today. He was not very good, had trouble locating his fastball and leaving stuff up a little. But he did a great job working out of a jam in the 5th and Avila awful defense was the only reason he didn't get out of the 6th (both were scored as WPs, both were PBs IMO). But what he did was pitch through his struggles and he kept them in the game.

Not a good loss at all though but the Indians bailed Carmona out with some great defensive plays. 3-0 lead in the first, Carmona walking guys left and right and a horrible at bat by Mags in the 8th with Damon on second with no one out.

Alex Avila is not a good catcher, they need to look elsewhere to find a long-term solution at the position. He's usually overmatched at the plate and Tigers pitchers have 23 wild pitches while he is on there this year. The Tigers have 16 in more games played when Laird is catching so I think seven or eight of those wild pitches are passed balls. The two in the 6th should have been caught, especially the one that allowed the run to score.

Tigers are 16-27 on the road. Oof.

You forgot to add the catcher's interference he had earlier this year and the balk he caused in another game by picking up the ball with his mask. This team sucks on the road. It's like night and day. Tigers needed to win Game 1 today after going up 3-0 and having Verlander on the mound. Will be interesting to see what version of Porcello we get tonight.

Fantastic performance by Porcello tonight , which is a very good sign going forward. :censored:

Too bad these idiots can't get runners home, leaving them all over the place. ;)

In both games today Damon doubled in the late innings to lead off an inning, and in both games they failed to score.

Those were two of the worst baseball games I've seen all year today, Cleveland played like a last place team and still won both. Terrible.

—1B Miguel Cabrera extended his career-best hitting streak to 20 games, lining an RBI single off the left-field wall in the first inning. Cabrera, named AL Player of the Week for last week's work, now has a league-high 78 RBI with 43 of those coming on the road. "We're here to win games," Cabrera said, "not for personal stuff."

If the Tigers win the central, I got a feeling Cabrera will be a big reason why. This guy has turned his life around and brought his game to a new level.

Raburn has no business ever playing CF. Why Leyland would put him there and DH Damon is beyond me.

The Andy Oliver experiment is officially over. He needs to go back to Erie and develop more.

What a :goodposting: weekend of baseball.

Toledo scored 18 runs in 15 innings off of Gomez this year while the Tigers managed two in seven innings today.Worst series ever, that was absolutely embarrassing and now they get to the tough part of the schedule. I have no idea what this team will do because they probably will continue to win at home even against good teams, and lose on the road to the Indians and Orioles of the league. Every time I think they have figured it out, they blow up again. Now 16-29 on the road.

Oliver looked decent in his first start. After that he was nothing more than a BP pitcher. Why did they keep trotting him out there? Cost the Tigers 3-4 games.

The great/terrible part of this is that the Twins, WS and Tigers are all extremely flawed. We can laugh at each other in the bad times, yet also empathize. I think each group will believe they are completely done at some points, in the driver's seat at others from now until October 1st.

Yep, he's gone for now at least. I would assume Porcello will be starting on Friday.Sun, 7/18 at Indians L 2-7 Gomez (1-0) Oliver (0-4) Mon, 7/19 Rangers 7:05p Bonderman (5-6) Feldman (5-8) Tue, 7/20 Rangers 7:05p Galarraga (3-2) Hunter (6-0) Wed, 7/21 Rangers 7:05p Scherzer (6-7) Lewis (9-5) Thu, 7/22 Blue Jays 1:05p Verlander (11-5) Romero (7-6)

This divisioin is maddening. It's the same thing every year, and always ends up coming down to the wire between two of the teams or all three. I kind of would just like to see a really good team come out of this division and run away with the whole thing and threaten to actually win the Series. As long as it's not the White Sox, that is.

Pretty much what you said, I'd be surprised if the winner of the 3 gets past the 1st round. That said, 23 years and counting for the kittycats when it comes to winning even this division...

I have to disagree on Avila. He's technically a rookie, has a good arm and can hit the ball with some power. The skills that he doesn't have yet are teachable and come with experience. And short of John Buck, the free agent market in this offseason for catchers is pretty weak.Let Avila play four out of every five, put Laird out there for the occasional lefty, and let Avila sink or swim.

Yeah that looks like what is going to happen but I think he's gonna sink a lot. He needs a lot of work on technique, I mean a ton.

It's unfortunate that due to Laird's play he's been pressed into duty at the major league level this year. He certainly should've been in AAA this year developing instead of being thrown into the fray. Starting him at AAA was the original plan in ST from what I recall. Unfortunately the Tigers have no other options so he is playing a lot more this season than he should be. Hopefully it doesn't hurt his overall development because I think he can be a solid catcher long term. Maybe they should re-sign Inge for next year and then tell him in ST that he'll be playing catcher full time.

I hate Raburn more than Inge. At least Inge can play defense. Raburn has to be the worst defender I have ever seen play at the major league level. No joke. Only thing he hasn't done yet is pull the Canseco "have the ball bounce of your head and into the stands for a HR" gaffe in the OF. His hitting this year has also been worse than Inge's.

Bonderman looks like #### tonight, you aren't playing Cleveland any more guys. One thing I really don't like about Leyland teams is when they get in a rut, they seem like they'll never win again. Very streaky teams, and when they are bad they pitch and hit bad.

What a horrible swing bu Guillen in that situation (2-0 count and he reached for it with the bases loaded) and Damon should have been able to judge that the ball was going to drop on that Boesch hit. ####### incredible.

Not feeling very good about Boesch. I fear the fun may be over.
Since a few of you refer to me as the Debbie Downer of Tigers fans on this board I haven't said much about him, but this correction was way overdue. His name may still be hot enough to sell before his value falls any further.

I'd rather have Inge than Kelly.
I would like to see both of them gone. Keep Kelly as a utility guy that plays once a week or so. Inge has run his course in Detroit, he will be a FA next year and it is time to move on. Inge has no upside at all at this point in his career.

I kind of hope we collapse this week without Inge, push us towards being sellers instead of teasing us with a pennant race I don't think we can win.

I think we'd have to lose something like 7 of our next 9 to make it happen though.

Any Tiger fans think Detroit would trade back for Jackson, going to be a fire sale in AZ

Possible, but with Inge out i think they will be looking for a 3B or SS first, they were already weak hitting before the injury.
