***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Porcello was really good today, need a lot more of that in these last 2.5 months. Team is hitting and the starting pitching looks good but now they have to go into chicago and show me something. If they take two of three, I'll be ecstatic.

Valverde has allowed baserunners in 12 of his last 13 save opportunities and lefties are hitting around .350 against him. He has not allowed a run in those games and he's 26 of 26 in save opportunities but that is gonna come to an end with all these baserunners. Save the blown saves for non division games please.

Satisfied with the weekend but not excited, they really need to go to Chicago and play well.

Yeah the Chicago series is really big. They outplayed the Tigers in Detroit after the break. I expect Below to get lit up and Verlander to shut them down after they got to him last time. If Scherzer can deliver a series win the Tigers will be in pretty good shape.

Rookie Below a 7-5 dog tonite, would be huge if the Tigers could somehow with this first game of the series.

There's that good old Detroit eternal optimism.I've never seen a fanbase that panics over every loss like this one. Tigers just took three out of four from the Twins and then lose a game they had no business winning and this town is lining the bridge.

I was shocked myself, would have preferred seeing AL Al in to put the fire out and then put Ruffin in the next inning or whenever.Leyland's logic on this (and i dont have much of an opinion either way) is that Bat Flippin' Quentin has hit EVERY other tiger pitcher it seems like, might as well try a guy he's never seen before. All of these auditions may be trying to see if they need to deal for bullpen help in addition to anything else they might be looking at (SP, etc) or if they have guys that can take the heat.

I think very highly of myself, but I wouldn't consider myself the "town". I'v just seen this act before and I see nothing that will result in a more positive outcome. A pessismist is an optimist with experience.

I think very highly of myself, but I wouldn't consider myself the "town". I'v just seen this act before and I see nothing that will result in a more positive outcome. A pessismist is an optimist with experience.

I've yet to see an even halfway plausible explanation for this belief that the second half performances of 2006-2010 have any bearing on 2011. If people want to be pessimistic because they just don't think the roster is good enough to win then so be it. But people around here actually cite their recent second half struggles as evidence of why they will do poorly and expect to be taken seriously. I think these are the same people who believe that whether they use the word 'no-hitter' will actually have an impact on the outcome of a game.
 
"I'm suprised that Leyland put the kid in that situation." Why? You mean the past 5 years haven't been indicative of a moronic move in a clutch situation. You mean history hasn't proven that Leyland puts the team in a position to lose and not to win. It's tiresome. Leyland only won a championship in the first place due to an owner loading up a roster before he sold the team and he won't win another one. He has a below .500 career record, he flops in the second half, and it might almost be better for the team with the talent they have to flop in this second half so a real manager comes in next year.

Edit to add: My curiosity has spiked recently on Leyland's managerial moves during the Pirates/Braves series. I'll report back if my lazy ### does ever look into it.

I think it's a lot like the Wings in the 90's under Bryan Murray before Scotty Bowman came to town. Yes that team had talent to get deeper into the playoffs but somehow they'd end up choking when it came to crunch time and getting bounced from the playoffs earlier than they should have. Same thing with the Tigers here. They may have the talent to play well in the second half and win the division but does the team have the mental makeup to overcome its prior 2nd half failures if times get tough - there are a lot of guys on those prior teams that failed in the 2nd half that are still on the 2011 roster so it's not as if there has been a culture change with the mental makeup of the current team. I am hoping for the best but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if this team failed to get it done in the 2nd half. What's the old saying - fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me...

ETA: 4-1 Tigers tonight. 5-2 win tomorrow with Max. They take 2 of 3.

The common denominator is Leyland. I just don't have faith in his ability to finish the deal.

Where there is reason for Tigers fans to be nervous, I think this team is shaping up to be a better team right now than they were before the All-star break. The middle of the lineup is looking tough as nails and no more automatic out Inge at the bottom. Betemit is a big upgrade with the bat. Guillen is hitting well. Rayburn isn't even a complete waste anymore. That said, Verlander is coming down to earth a bit, but still one of the best in the game. Starting pitching is what will determine if the Tigers make the playoff. I like them better than any of the other teams in the division.

Sux own Verlander, always have. He's not "coming down to earth."
 
I really needed a 1-2-3 ninth for Valverde. Whew.

Good win, Verlander made a couple of bad pitchees but got medieval on the Sux late. Nice job Betimet!

 
Inge played his first game for Toledo tonight:

3-4 2B, HR and 4 RBIs

I think that's more RBIs than he had in Detroit in June and July. Call'em up!

 
2-6 in the order without a hit today. Tough to do anything with that to overcome. A very frustrating game so far today.

 
Brad Penny and V-Mart got into it pretty good this afternoon. Penny was acting like a tool.
