First of all, the fact that you insinuate that the Tigers would be six games better if Leyland wasn't the manager shows how little clue you have. I'm not the biggest Leyland fan, and yes he does things that make you question what the hell he is thinking, but managers don't have nearly the impact you seem to think they do, and neither does batting order. He plays the players he has, and on a team with as little depth as the Tigers, that means he ends up playing some guys he would probably rather not. And, believe it or not, Raburn is a much better outfield defender than Boesch.Career OF UZR/150Raburn: 1.1Boesch: -7.1This is just rude and quite frankly its clear you don't have a clue. The man has batted Maggs 3rd all season when he's been healthy. This is a .230 hitter with no power and no multiple basehit potential. Essentially a walking out. After VMart got hurt he surrounded Miggy with the bash brothers Maggs and Ryan Raburn striking fear into the hearts of the Royals. Ryan Raburn batted second for the majority of the year batting below .200. The man still was taking out Boesch in the late innings a few weeks back a few months after saying he wouldn't.... and who is his replacement, you might ask: Ryan Raburn. Real upgrade there Jimmy. How about throwing Coke out a night after he blew a game for us in a clutch situation only to have him start to do the same thing again? These arn't rarities or "nonsensical raving", this isn't "question one decision and praise one" this is paying attention throughout the season. Maybe you can withstand guys like Jason Grilli and Ryan Raburn but I can't. Jimmy doesn't play to win, he plays favorites. It's hard to lose when you have arguably the best hitter and pitcher in baseball yet they're only up by 4 when I feel they should be up by 10 and it is a direct correlation to Leyland's managing in my mind. The amount of time wasted bashing Leyland by Tigers fans--most of it nonsensical raving about decisions that don't affect games--is mind-boggling. Occasionally I'll question a decision or praise one. I can't tolerate Leyland-basher-guy who watches games to catalog the things that go wrong in a game and throw a tantrum about them later. It makes me sad that most Tigers fans are ####### idiots.
What in the blue hell? I don't know what baseball you guys like to watch but I don't like to watch one where two of the teams best hitters are usually batting 7th and 8th. Why is Avila still batting 8th when the 3 hole is barren wasteland for Miggy? Those moves, believe or not, do matter and matter on a day in, day out basis. I guess I'm crazy though. A stark raving Tigers fan who doesn't pay attention to every game. The thing about Leyland's 'experience and information to draw from', never seen the man use it.This is what I'm talking about, this narrow view with illogical expectations of perfect players and perfect outcomes. For every decision that doesn't work out that you think you would have handled correctly, a list of reasons can be made why your idea is foolish. The difference is, Leyland has information at his disposal that you don't, has experience that you don't, and has to live with the consequences. You don't.As tiresome as listening to fans whine about Leyland is hearing the defensive reaction they give when called on it. I'm not saying Leyland is the best manager in baseball and no one should question a line-up or pitching change. Sometimes I agree with him, sometimes I don't. The point is too many fans have warped views, settle too easily into a mob mentality, and waste so much time #####ing and moaning that it defeats the purpose of being a fan. I'm referring to the guy who yells when he talks, concedes nothing positive, and wants Leyland fired after every loss. Listening to people nowhere near as smart as they think they are gets old. I'm with you. I don't care how much experience Leyland has or how much more he knows about baseball than me. That does not excuse his poor decisions. I think he has cost this team a good 5 wins this year.'Anthony Borbely said:The Tigers have really been bad lately with men in scoring position. It caught up to them last night. What a shame to waste that great effort from the bullpen.
Bottom of the order had multiple opportunities (Jhonny and Carlos in particular). Encouraging to see the middle relievers holding tight, but dang, it would have been great to get that first game in Cleveland.Last night had the makings of the "The game that started Cleveland on their way out of the race" kind of thing. Much like the Pirates and that 19 inning debacle with atlanta. Still feel the division is coming down to Tigers and White Sox.Stupid, stupid lineup for tonight. If you feel the need to rest multiple guys, why not do it when Verlander is pitching when you might only need 1-2 runs to win?A great effort last night by both the defense and the bullpen. That was a big game for Cleveland. Detroit has to get out of there without getting swept.
I hope he isn't hurt. My guess is Leyland forgot that Boesch needs a rest.Boesch was taken out of the game, not sure why.

It doesn't matter if the Tigers had a week off before last night, Guillen is frail and old and he played 14 innings after a 2 hour rain delay. Jackson and Peralta were on the bench to get as many lefties in as possible with the exception of Raburn who was one of the only players who didn't play all night last night. There is no NEED for any these players to sit. The idea is that fresher players and left handed hitters will fare better. You disagree? Cool. But you know why the Tigers lost today? Because Porcello got blown the #### up and it looks like the Indians are just going to inexplicably own the Tigers like the Twins usually do.'Anthony Borbely said:Tonight's lineup:1. Andy Dirks, CF2. Ramon Santiago, SSYou have to be ####### kidding me. 3 starters sitting out when you are playing your main competition? Maybe I could see sitting Austin Jackson. But there is no excuse for sitting Guillen and especially Peralta. I know they played 14 innings, but they had a day off MONDAY...plus, they played Sunday afternoon, so they had a day and a half off. If they need rest because of a 14 inning game, they should not be here to begin with. The Leyland defenders have the floor.
Hey, don't come here and jinx our pitcher.Dear Tigers fans --The Indians in your rear view mirror may appear larger than they appear.Seriously, though, we could get no-hit tonight with Verlander pitching for you guys.

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland skipped Brad Penny in the rotation earlier this week to allow Justin Verlander to pitch against the Cleveland Indians on his normal amount of rest.
At this point, he does not plan to do the same thing next week.
Leyland said Verlander will start Tuesday at home against Minnesota but is not scheduled to start again until Aug. 22 in the series opener at Tampa Bay. That will give Verlander one extra day's rest between those two starts.
The off-day coming up Thursday gave Leyland the option of skipping a pitcher to allow Verlander to move up to face the Indians on Aug. 21 in the finale of their three-game series at Comerica Park.
Verlander, who leads the majors in innings pitched, is scheduled for nine more starts this season. That number will remain the same whether he starts on Aug. 21 or Aug. 22.
This is unacceptable. First three spots go to guys hitting sub .250 and last two spots guys are hitting nearly .290. Not sure I have ever seen anything like that in the majors on a consistent basis.I see Leyland rolled out the big bats at the top of the lineup tonight. Nothing like going sub .250 hitters in the top three spots. None of them with an OPS over .700.Listen, I get the argument that lineups and managerial decisions don't have as much effect as I think. Can the man at least pretend to ####### care?
in RF, a liability for sure. Start platooning Raburn and Dirks, sit the old man down. Bat Jackson, Boesch, VMART, Miggy, Peralta, Avila, Guillen, Betemit, Raburn/Dirks
Ordonez obviously isn't getting it done in the three hole but it's clear Leyland isn't going to move VMart, Peralta or Avila, I guess believing that their success this year relies on them staying comfortable where they are.
His call for the squeeze and going with Benoit in the 8th proved to be the difference in the game, however. Just sayin.
Yeah, that really is the correct observation. As maddening as it may be, I do this with my people at work as well sometimes. Being comfortable is important in any job, in baseball it's critical IMO. Would be nice if he'd try it for a few games though, VMART really needs to be hitting 3rd.They argued a lot last night. The HP ump wasn't calling it inside, but then the zone got wide outside. He was calling it both ways. They should've known that.Verlander has given up 21 earned runs in his last 15 starts. Damn. For a young team, Cleveland argues balls and strikes more than any team I've ever seen. They spent all of game 1 arguing with Kellogg (who was pretty bad) and they are #####ing and moaning again tonight.

He gave up 3 runs last night. Is that considered jinxing? I'm surprised we scraped together that many runs.Hey, don't come here and jinx our pitcher.Dear Tigers fans --The Indians in your rear view mirror may appear larger than they appear.Seriously, though, we could get no-hit tonight with Verlander pitching for you guys.

I like that line-up a lot.The three runs given up last night masked another great effort. Unusual for Verlander to give up two walks, then the double on a 1-2 count. I was curious about the 15 Tigers ahead of Verlander's 100 wins. In looking at team stats for all years, it was interesting to see that Verlander rates top ten, I believe, in ERA and is about to move to third all-time for Detroit in WHIP (1.20). I also noticed Cabrera sitting quite high in the batting stats for career BA with Detroit ...as is Mags.Bat Jackson, Boesch, VMART, Miggy, Peralta, Avila, Guillen, Betemit, Raburn/Dirks
Verlander stops losing streaks. This season, he's 12-3 with a 1.66 ERA after a Tigers loss.
Also fun to watch has been Jose Valverde, who set a Tigers record with his 33rd consecutive save Thursday night. Papa Grande's save total leads the AL and is tied for second in the majors. It's the signature flair that Valverde punctuates each save with that makes him so distinct. And maybe sort of polarizing among his peers.
But as Jeff Passan points out, he's been dominant in save situations, compiling an 0.55 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 33 innings.

yikesAl Alburquerque was struck with a line drive off the bat of Orioles' infielder Robert Andino during batting practice Friday.Scary stuff. It's not clear exactly where Alburquerque was hit, but he was writhing in pain on the ground in the outfield before being attended to by medical personnel. We'll pass along an update on his status as soon as it is made available.
One of the few bright spots on defense. He has an incredible nose for the wall, seems to know exactly where it is without taking his eye off the ball. Some amazing plays.Speaking of Jackson, it will be downright criminal if he doesn't win a gold glove this year.
If he keeps stranding guys at third with one out, even Leyland is going to have to re-evaluate his favorites. Maggs days at hitting in the third spot are numbered. In response to why Leyland won't move down Maggs and to quote myself. Leyland does not play to win, he plays favorites.
Congrats on the 30k attendance for Thursday night's game. You must be very proud that your city almost had the stadium 75% full for a pennant race game in August. Do you dispute the 23k figure for Wednesday night? How about the attendance for the Angels series at the end of July when they were in first place?19k, 19k, 21k'wadegarrett said:Still riding this train huh?Keep us updated on attendance figures please. Maggs stranded seven last night. Ouch.Sabathia got torched last night; Weaver today (big ERA jump after giving up 8 runs). Go Verlander!'Da Guru said:Why is Leyland being so stubborn about moving Maggs down?
Maggs "was" a great hitter, but now his power is all but gone..how many extra base hits does he have this season?
Rod Allen said last night the Tigers have been outscored in the first inning something like 86-39..said it is unheard of for a first place club.
Maggs should be #8 and Jackson should be #9.
