DETROIT -- First baseman Miguel Cabrera shouldn’t be too shocked upon learning Tuesday that the Detroit Tigers signed first baseman Prince Fielder. It had apparently been discussed for nearly a week.

"It was something we were talking about during the fan fest,” Cabrera told a Venezuelan newspaper Lider en Deporte late Tuesday.

The club’s annual Winter Caravan Tour made its rounds Thursday and Friday.

Cabrera confirmed the addition of Fielder will result in him shifting to third base in 2012 -- a position he last played in 2008.

“Return to third base,” Cabrera told the Lider's César Augusto Márque, “that is my natural position.”

The Tigers reportedly approached Cabrera about Fielder prior to the deal to gauge his interest in shifting to third and Cabrera expressed no hesitation.

Cabrera has played 383 of his 1,351 career games at third, including 157 games there in 2006, and 153 games in 2007, as a member of the Florida Marlins.

The addition of Fielder could result in less playing time for third baseman Brandon Inge, who was expected to platoon at third base with utilityman Don Kelly.

As a result, the Tigers might operate a rotation at first and third base, which would likely include Inge, Kelly and Cabrera all playing third.

The Tigers were supposed to score 10 runs per game in 2008 and it didn't exactly work out that way. Will be an interesting Spring Training to see how they figure out what Cabrera can do in the field. I just bought tickets for 3 ST games so I can't wait. It still wouldn't surprise me if Delmon Young gets dealt for someone who is a legit leadoff hitter.

For Ilitch the time is now and I guarantee you he spoke to his daughter and sons about this deal because Mike might not see the end of this deal. By the time we get to 2017 this deal won't be a monster contract, it'll just be a really big one with four years remaining. So you compete now and worry about everything else later while raking in huge profits from Fielder's presence and hopefully at least one World Championship. Haters gonna hate, but this is a franchise deal done by an owner who knows he needs to win right now. I love it, Ilitch is the best owner in Detroit sports history IMO and one of the best in all of sports right now. He will most definitely be the face of the team. My 7 year old son asked me to print out the story so he could talk about it tomorrow for current events in school. I guarantee you the kid is psyched. You're spot on with Fielder....He's big, almost cartoonish, he can hit the ball an f'ing mile, and he's got a million dollar smile too. Verlander is all business and not kid friendly. Miggy is one of the greatest hitters I've ever seen but I don't really want his ilk as a role model for my kid. Fielder is a big kid playing a kid's game, and he at least seems like a genuinely nice guy. Kids adore him. I'm so excited for this move for so many reasons. We live on the Lake Michigan shore area so it's about 3 hours to get to Comerica for us. But I think we'll be going more this year than we have in the past. My son will be begging me.I love me some Ilitch too. First the Red Wings and he is all in to win with the Tigers. How do you not love that? Any one hating is actually jealous if they're a fan of a different team. Truth is they wish their owner would have done it. Like I stated somewhere else, I know what it's like to be a Yankee fan today, and have a newfound respect for George Steinbrenner. Ilitch doesn't just want to collect the cash from the hard working folks who fill Comerica every summer, he wants to win. When I first saw this deal I thought it didn't make any sense whatsoever (both the contract terms and the fact that DET already has VMart/Miggy) but I guess this helps put it in perspective. Congrats

Completely ridiculous statement. Magglio was one of the best signings the Tigers ever made. Even his roughest year, last year, wasn't a disaster. If Prince works out as well as Magglio I'll be thrilled.
