Peter Gammons agrees with Doctor Detroit, we'll probably see Cabrera in LF. He can play 3B because most people don't understand that the guy is a tremendous fielder with soft hands and good reflexes but his range is gonna kill us there. And no one can hate this deal. The Tigers didn't sell their farm system, the owner is worth $30 billion and he'll get his $214 million back if Fielder helps the Tigers win a championship and Fielder is already loved in Detroit. to that end Fielder is now the face of the franchise. Not Verlander, not Cabrera but Fielder. Why? Because he's a character, the camera loves him and he loves it right back and he's said to be one of the hardest working guys in the game which Detroit loves. Cabrera is awkward with the media, has had personal issues and just isn't as gregarious as Fielder. Now we won't love Cabrera any less, but I think the young fans especially will love Fielder more. Verlander is serious business, we won't love him any less either but again...Fielder is going to be the biggest draw.So for the next four years or so the team is built to compete for a title with young power arms, two of the five best hitters in baseball and great support guys everywhere. For Ilitch the time is now and I guarantee you he spoke to his daughter and sons about this deal because Mike might not see the end of this deal. Tigers can keep Fielder for the length of the deal even as Fielder's skills erode and transition to the next era five years from now. By the time we get to 2017 this deal won't be a monster contract, it'll just be a really big one with four years remaining. So you compete now and worry about everything else later while raking in huge profits from Fielder's presence and hopefully at least one World Championship. Haters gonna hate, but this is a franchise deal done by an owner who knows he needs to win right now. I love it, Ilitch is the best owner in Detroit sports history IMO and one of the best in all of sports right now. Dombrowski probably saw the opportunity and he continues to impress turning this horrible franchise into a serious contender and player in all free agent transactions. I ####### love it!
