The best shape of his careerTMWord around the campfire is Cabrera is down 20+ pounds and is looking ripped. We'll see in a few weeks.![]()
Yept, the Tigers are the "Dream Team" of MBLGreat move by Mr I. Should have the division wrapped up before football starts again!
There is a picture of him and Hanley from Hanley's twitter account out there that has Miggy looking pretty trim. We will see soon enough once spring training opens up.Word around the campfire is Cabrera is down 20+ pounds and is looking ripped. We'll see in a few weeks.![]()
With Raburn now at 2B and Young slated to see a lot of time at DH, I wouldn't be surprised if Inge gets squeezed in favor of an outfielder.I watched a little of the press conference today.I don't see why the Tigers would keep Inge on the team.Assuming a 12 man pitching staff, the roster looks like:AvilaLairdCabrera FielderRaburnPeraltaKellySantiagoDirksJacksonBoeschYoungThat leaves one spot open. Why keep a declining defensive 3B that can't hit? Kelly can easily play 3B when Cabrera doesn't.
Magglio finished 2nd in the MVP voting, was a 2x all star, won a batting title, hit .300 in 5 of his 7 seasons and hit the walk off HR to win the ALCS. That was a good signing.Completely ridiculous statement. Magglio was one of the best signings the Tigers ever made. Even his roughest year, last year, wasn't a disaster. If Prince works out as well as Magglio I'll be thrilled.Rob Neyer wrote the following in his blog today (or yesterday) about Magglio's contract:
"Magglio ... well, that one didn't work out too well. That one didn't work out too well at all."
What a weird thing to write. I don't know of any Tiger fan or (I'm guessing) executive that would complain a bit about Magglio's time in the D. Sure the last year wasn't good - but overall? Magglio was a great Tiger.

Maggs first and last seasons he had injury issues but when healthy Maggs produced. Still, do you not sign him?Who knows. I think they do.How many games before they move Miggy to DH? Do they even attempt to open the season with him at 3B?
Oh he's gonna get a lot of games at DH regardless. I think they try him at 3B, then try him at LF too. I wish they would just tell him he's playing LF and put him out there. They seem like they have this issue every year with Inge, VMART, Guillen, Sheffield, etc, etc, etc. Logically the guy would be ok in LF so I think that's where you put him but Miggy wants to play 3B so they are gonna give him a shot there. But there is no reason they shouldn't want to keep VMART and that guy is going to be a DH on this team given all that has happened. So they need to play Miggy in the field going forward and IMO that place is LF. Again, if Manny can do it so can Miggy who is a better athlete. Leyland said he thinks Miggy has one of the best arms in baseball. That is an exaggeration but Miggy's arm is probably above average at 3B. But as we all know the concern is him actually getting to the ball. His glove and arm are at least average if not above average, but his range is bad to abominable. How many games before they move Miggy to DH? Do they even attempt to open the season with him at 3B?
I think OK is his ceiling. I dont think he will be a huge embarrassment, but the chances of him being an average defensive 3B is slim. And that may be OK. There are many ways to win baseball games. And having Cabrera playing the field while having another bat DH is most likely a very good way to win ball gamesI actually think he will be OK at 3rd. His glove is solid. 3rd base is more about quickness than speed, well except for bunts. The Tigers aren't going to win many games with defense, but that was true last year too.
Off the top of my head he was like -30 runs there last time he played the position. That's like 5 wins he's costing the team right there. That was also 3.5 years and 40 pounds ago. He would be, by far, the worst defensive third baseman in the game. Maybe the worse defensive player period. No way they run him out there.I actually think he will be OK at 3rd. His glove is solid. 3rd base is more about quickness than speed, well except for bunts. The Tigers aren't going to win many games with defense, but that was true last year too.
He played something like 15 games there in 2008 to generate those numbers. Talk about a small sample size. The two years preceding that season, he was a -4 to -5 run third basemen. Not good, but not terrible either. If he can post a -10 now, that would be a decent tradeoff.'Premier said:Off the top of my head he was like -30 runs there last time he played the position. Even Denny Mclain has something to say to IngeI was listening to The Ticket yesterday and the whole show was on how Inge is not happy with the Fielder singing and what is role will be, and he won`t be "The chipper Inge" that everybody is used to seeing. Inge has some major league balls for even opening his mouth..the guy is dam lucky just to be on any MLB roster..let alone whining about playing time. The Tigers should release Inge right now and just go with Kelly at third on the days Cabrera is not playing.
enny McLain held up an autographed photo of Brandon Inge and showed it to his audience."This was Brandon Inge's last photo before he began whining about his playing time," McLain announced. The former Tigers pitcher drew laughter from 300 guests who attended the Madonna University baseball team's fundraiser Saturday. Inge lost his shot to start last week when the Tigers signed Prince Fielder to a nine-year, $214 million contract; he will play first base and Miguel Cabrera will move to third.Inge has not commented publicly since the signing was announced, but Tigers manager Jim Leyland said Inge is "not the happiest camper." Before the Fielder signing, Leyland said Inge would platoon with Don Kelly, but Inge responded by saying he was preparing to be the full-time third baseman for the Tigers.McLain said Inge should be excited because the Tigers are a bigger threat to win a title.McLain held the Inge photo up and tossed it to the floor."It's the first time he's hit something in two years," McLain said, to more laughter."This is a wonderful deal," McLain added of the Fielder signing. "You can never be upset about getting a guy that drives in 100 runs and you are a backup to the best hitter in baseball. Now you've got (Fielder) and Cabrera, and it doesn't matter who you put in front or in back of them, they are going to be better hitters because of these two. I suspect Miggy won't be Brooks Robinson at third base, but neither was Brandon Inge."I'd rather have a guy who bats over .300 and drives in 100 runs who boots a few balls or doesn't get to some than a guy who hits .190 and is not contributing offensively in a major way. I would make that trade every day."terry.foster@detnews.comLove it..Even Denny Mclain has something to say to IngeI was listening to The Ticket yesterday and the whole show was on how Inge is not happy with the Fielder signing and what is role will be, and he won`t be "The chipper Inge" that everybody is used to seeing. Detroit is saying 3B or bust. Rotoworld is saying Miggy will flop at 3rd and it will be a 1B/DH jobshare.•Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski ruled out the possibility of playing Miguel Cabrera in left field, according to James Schmehl of MLive.com.
Sliding drill?? That is even worse. I watched many a Tiger game last year and Victor does not go down very often.'Gopher State said:Victor Martinez's knee injury is even worse than originally thought
By Steve Gardner, USA TODAY
Victor Martinez hit .330 with 12 homers and 103 RBI last season for the Detroit Tigers. However, he'll need two separate surgeries to repair damage to his knee and will miss the entire 2012 season.CAPTIONBy Brace Hemmelgarn, US PresswireAny speculation that Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez might be able to recover from an offseason knee injury and return in time for the playoffs can officially be put to rest.
The Tigers have announced that Martinez underwent microfracture surgery on "both the medial and lateral meniscus in his left knee on Friday." In addition, Martinez will have a second surgery to reconstruct the ACL in that same knee sometime in the next six-to-eight weeks.
The surgeries will prevent V-Mart from even beginning any baseball-related activities until the 2012 season is almost over.
Martinez suffered the injury when his right foot slipped during a sliding drill and his left knee buckled. "It's kind of like a sock in the gut. You have to be resilient. After you feel sorry for yourself for a day or two, you move on," Tigers president Dave Dombrowski said at the time.
The Tigers certainly did move on -- signing free agent first baseman Prince Fielder to a nine-year, $214 million contract. Fielder will fill the offensive void by providing lineup protection for slugger Miguel Cabrera, but the Tigers' plan to field a defense with Fielder at first base and Cabrera moving to third base has been met with a healthy dose of skepticism.
Wow, didn't think Victor hurt his knee this bad, wishing him the best
That's the most likely scenario for this year. Next year Delmon Young is a free agent and the organization can re-evaluate Castellanos. If Victor comes back we could be looking at LF Miggy, 1B Prince, DH Victor, 3B Kelly/Castellanos (maybe a free agent place holder for the first couple months?).'scrumptrulescent said:Detroit is saying 3B or bust. Did you know that the Twins had a higher opening day payroll than the Tigers in 2011? Tigers are still $80 million behind the Yankees. Not in the yankee payroll league yet, but the Tigers are making progress
I know DD Twins overspent on the M & M boys and they will pay for it for years. If Tigers win big worth every penny, I just not a fan of long term contracts for big $$$$$$$, no one will out do the Yankees, but the Tigers are spending a large amount of $$$ for a midwest team.Did you know that the Twins had a higher opening day payroll than the Tigers in 2011?
