***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Someone tried to tell me today that since he was the "elder statesmen" of the club, he should be allowed to go out on his terms. I almost threw up.
On any other team other than the Tigers Inge would have never came close to being an elder statesman..he would have been out of the league years ago.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Joel Zumaya's million-dollar arm might have betrayed him again.

While throwing from the mound against live batters Saturday, the right-hander felt something in his elbow that persuaded him to end the session and call the trainer over. He will have a magnetic resonance imaging exam on the elbow this morning.

looks like the tiger fans called this one right. To bad, nice kid, it cost the Twins 400,000.00, if he doesn't throw another pitch :(

That really sucks. He has a golden arm, but just can't stay healthy. You have to feel for him.

they always said his delivery motion was so violent that he would be an injury risk.Dang I feel he was a huge part of the 2006 run, he was a monster that year.

Zumaya has made a really good living for amount of innings pitched in his career. Would like to have seen how he would have done if he had been healthy the last 5 seasons.

3B Miguel Cabrera will report to Spring Training at about 265 pounds, roughly 10 above what his goal is as he returns to third base for Detroit to make room for new 1B Prince Fielder. Manager Jim Leyland continues to endorse the move, saying, "The first time he makes an error, people are going to be shaking their heads," Leyland said. "Well, I won't be. I'm willing to live with it, unless it just gets to a point where it's not working." Leyland has been told Cabrera is at 265. Wow, miggy at 265, he fit on my 27" tv screen :excited:
Maybe Leyland meant .265 on the BAC test

FORT MYERS, FLA. — The fireballer has flamed out once again, and this time it may be for good.

Minnnesota Twins reliever Joel Zumaya was diagnosed with a torn ligament in his right elbow on Sunday, meaning his latest comeback bid has ended almost before it began.

Zumaya had signed an incentive-laden, one-year deal with the Twins, who hoped he could bolster their bullpen with his 100 mph heat. General manager Terry Ryan knew Zumaya’s long injury history when he offered the contract, but the possibility of getting the overpowering arm that electrified the Tigers in 2006 intrigued him.

“I took a risk. It was a high risk with high reward,” Ryan said after the MRI exam revealed the torn ulnar collateral ligament. “Unfortunately it didn’t work. And he feels bad. I feel bad.”

Zumaya lasted just 13 pitches in his first session of live batting practice Saturday before walking off the mound with pain in his elbow. Ryan spoke with him on Sunday after they received the news, but said it was too early to talk about Zumaya’s plans for the future.

The 27-year-old could choose to have Tommy John surgery and start another exhaustive rehab program that could last a year or longer. Or he could choose to retire.

“He’s distraught, as you’d expect,” Ryan said of Zumaya, who was unavailable for comment. “He’s going to come in here in the next day or so and we’re going to talk about the immediate future for him.”

Zumaya had not thrown a pitch since June 2010 after breaking his elbow while pitching for Detroit in a game at Target Field. He has never been better than in his rookie season with the Tigers, when he was a 21-year-old blast furnace who struck out 97 hitters in 831/3 innings and became one of the most feared setup men in the game.

Time for Zumaya to hang it up

Best case scenario for us inge haters if he makes the team:

Platoon him at 2nd with Ramon, batting 9th. Inge would only play about every 4th game. This would also free Raburn to play outfield where he's somewhat less of a hack imo. Maybe a platoon with Dirks in LF. Kelly can be Miggy's backup @ 3rd & sometime OF. Delmon DH, Lard backing up Avila makes for your non-pitching 13.

NOTES: Boesch said he is ready to play after missing the last postseason with a nagging thumb injury. The outfielder said the injury is behind him and he's ready to go. ... Leyland said that Brandon Inge is a viable candidate for the second base job even though he hasn't played the position since high school. He'll challenge Ryan Raburn and Ramon Santiago. Leyland said it would all come down to Inge's hitting. Inge will start at second on Saturday in Kissimmee against Atlanta.

Pulling for Inge to prove everyone wrong that he's not done and can play 2nd :banned:

"I know I can play it. I played it in high school. I know that's a long time ago, but infield is infield. It's kind of second-nature to me." Inge on playing 2 base. You have to love Inge's attitude on wanting to help the tigers.

Former All-Star Carlos Guillen will retire, the Mariners announced on Twitter.Guillen, 36, signed a minor-league deal with the Mariners in February after eight seasons in Detroit. He started his career in Seattle, but had his best years in Detroit. Guillen made three All-Star teams and finished 10th in MVP voting in 2006.The infielder finishes his career with a .285/.355/.443 line in parts of 14 seasons in the big leagues, wracking up 1,331 hits.

--2B Brandon Inge had to find a new glove in his effort to inject himself into the battle to play second base for Detroit. He asked around before settling on a model somewhat smaller than his third base glove. "(It looks) like I've been gypped out on some leather," Inge said. "But I'm getting used to it. At second base, there've been some things I didn't understand. They're completely opposite, like some of the position of your throws, to playing third. It takes some different footwork, but no problem. I like second base." He will see plenty of action at the new position early in the exhibition season.

Always liked Guillen and liked his style at the plate. Would have loved to see him stay healthy. It is too bad his body broke down at such a young age. Everytime he hit a extra base hit or try to score from second I was waiting for him to pull up lame.I thought I heard that Carlos has missed over 600 games due to injury in his MLB career. When I hear that it does make Ripkins streak pretty amazing.

DD is already gushing about Inge at second.

So, what did Dombrowski say to MLB radio?

If you watch him play second base, you would think hes played there for the last 10 years, hes moved that well to second base.. Hes been tremendous defensively, hes got a great arm, great hands…Hes been phenomenal. People will be shocked when they see him play, Dombrowski said.

After being displaced to second base by new star Prince Fielder, Inge made two notable defensive plays against the Atlanta Braves this weekend. But that wasnt all.

Asked about Inge at bat, Dombrowski said, Offensively hes been very good… His key will be, as we start spring training, we dont want to get carried away … As long as he continues to use the whole field, it wouldnt surprise me if he went out there and played a lot.

Inge has just about sealed the deal to be the starting 2nd baseman

Well at least Leyland won't nic fit over who to put at the number 9 spot in the order. .187 here Inge comes. :excited:

I'm no Inge fan, but I'd rather see him starting at 2B than Raburn and Santiago's not an everyday player.
Wasn't Raburn dealing with a lingering injury over the first part of last season ...then performed better in the back half? Coming in healthy, that could give the Tigers a number of options, which would be great.

Raburn is a much better hitter but fairly brutal as an infielder. I like him more as a DH/PH/OF as needed. I think Santiago & Kelly will be the backup infielders.

I don't want to be the guy to say it but Leyland has been batting Inge high in the order. Now I'm hoping thats just to get him AB's during the spring but given Leyland's past this has me concerned.

I think the basic lineup will look something like:aj - cfbb - rfmiggy - 3bprince - 1byoung - lfavila - cjhonny p - ssraburn/dirks- dhinge -2bReally can't see him batting any higher than the bottom 3rd.

--2B Brandon Inge has been impressive in his attempt to get playing time at a new position, second base. "He's been tremendous defensively, he's got a great arm, great hands. He's been phenomenal. People will be shocked when they see him play." Inge is getting a heavy dose of tiger praise

Looked at the order today.....Inge batting 2nd. Boesch batting 9th. That is such a stoopid batting order that I had to spell stupid wrong. I want to beat down Leyland in front of his wife, kids, and friends so he can be completely humiliated.

It's okay though because Inge can't hide his true colors. He's a below Mendoza Line hitter and when he starts showing he's also a below average 2B, he'll go back to the Mudhens.

ETA: Inge's first AB of the day in the 2 hole, 3 straight swinging strikes. Good choice Leyland!

Leyland has said he will bat Inge and even Avila in the 2 spot during ST to get them more at-bats. So far though I have only seen him do so with Inge.

I just got back from 3 days of ST. My observations are:

Boesch and Delmon Young are swinging the bat very well. Hopefully Boesch can stay healthy for a full season because he is only getting better.

Cabrera is either lazy, doesn't want to go all out at this point in ST, or simply can't get to slow ground balls hit between 3B and SS. The ones that were hit he simply deferred to the SS and didn't make much of an effort to get to the ball first. He was also errant with a few throws and almost pulled Prince off the bag. It's really going to be an adventure out there with him at 3B. He was his usual self at the plate though - killing the ball all over the field.

Prince struggled at the plate while I was down there and also had a ball that was grounded to first that he made a play on instead of letting Santiago get it that resulted in an infield hit. That was the only goofy defensive play he made.

Austin Jackson looks no different to me - he struck out 5 straight times in the span of two games. Sometimes looking, sometimes swinging. I think he is what he is at this point - a player batting out of spot as a leadoff hitter.

Starting pitching looked great. Verlander, Fister, and Scherzer all pitched without letting up a run. Verlander was toying with the Nats on Sat.

David Pauley got shelled and booed off the field. I don't see him making the team - he was a long shot anyway.

Crosby got roughed up too on Sat. He was really throwing hard - 94 mph and would change speeds down to 78. He just had trouble locating his pitches.

Below looked solid but was nothing spectacular. I really wanted to see Smyly pitch but wasn't able to do so in the three games I saw.

Inge played 2B in 2 of the 3 games I went to; he didn't play in the other - Raburn was the 2B. Outside of Verlander and Cabrera he still gets the loudest cheer in the park. Don't get it. He was 0/3 in the first game - a bounce out to P and two hard hit balls that were fly outs. Don Kelly homered in that game BTW. In the second game, Inge got a HR on his first AB though.

Santiago hit well when I saw him but he also made two errors at SS in the same game. He's much stronger at 2B than SS.

Papa Grande couldn't locate his pitches on Sat and let up a game tying HR. Not worried about him but he did have a rough game.

It was great to see the team in action. I renewed my 15 game plan so I am all ready for opening day. Also, got tickets for the Thursday game in June at Wrigley with some buddies. Gonna be a fun season...

People caring about spring training batting orders scare me.
Given Leylands history. Nothing would surprise me. Just saying he has been leaving Inge at the top a lot. Why wouldn't he just leave Boesch there who is younger and could use the extra ABs, also who is supposed to hit there in the regular season?

Boesch is the #2. Last week Leyland had a quote along the lines of "people may flip out and read things into it that they shouldn't but I am going to bat Inge second to get him some extra at bats so he can have every chance to compete for 2nd base job, I am also going to bat Avila second at times so I can get him an extra at-bat and limit his time behind the plate in ST."
