***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (1 Viewer)

Nothing for certain, but it seems it will be well into May before we see Fister start for the Tigers. As has been painfully obvious of late, starting pitching has become a sore point. Considering the weak division, take all the time he needs to be ready, but Fister is an essential component to the Tigers if there is going to be any hope at winning some payoff series. IMO, the fourth most important Tiger on the roster.

Fister ready to throw but timetable unclear

DETROIT -- Doug Fister appears to be ready to throw again as he recovers from an injury to his left rib cage, but the timetable for him to throw off a mound again, or start a rehab assignment, remains unclear.

Fister was expected to play catch during batting practice on Tuesday. Assuming that went off without a hitch, he would start a throwing progression that would include long-tossing from increasing distances before a full-fledged mound session.

"He came in [on Monday], got treated, did some really tough exercising and passed that with flying colors," manager Jim Leyland said. "I really don't have any timetable."

Because Fister has missed so much time since sustaining the injury two and a half weeks ago, he's expected to need a full progression of workouts before coming back. That pretty much rules out a return before the calendar changes from April to May.

I don't have any data, but just based off following the game it seems if pitchers try to return from core injuries in less than 6 weeks something bad usually happens. If he's back before the last half of May I'll be concerned.

Sox and Indians aren't exactly rolling over yet, though. Sox getting some great pitching (Peavy, Humber), have a great atmosphere with Ozzie gone, and even Dunn is contributing regularly. We had our chance to at least tie up the game in the 8th last night until 2 Ks with Cabrera and Fielder on base. :sigh:

Why not start Below tonight? Wilk is like the 12th best starter in the system, no reason to run him out there again. If nothing bring up Crosby for a start. Oof.

I think I might bump Fister up to the third most important Tiger. The Tigers starting pitching is more shallow than I thought. Right now we can expect to lose 3 out of 5 every time through the rotation.

you guys are in serious trouble when it comes to the starting rotation. Fister better get back and quick.
 Fister will be back and Porcello will be fine. Max is always awful at the beginning of the season and Smyly has been good.White Sux can't hit, no need to worry anyway.

Detroit BA .244White Sox BA .249:shrug:
So are you trying to make the case that over the course of the year the White Sux will have a better OPS than the Tigers? Would you like to put money on it? :coffee:

Really wasn't commenting on the White Sox bats until you derailed the conversation.

Right now the White Sux pitching is better than the Tigers pitching. Whether it will be like that as the season progresses, I don't know. Sale is underrated, Humber now very overrated and the rest we've discussed (Peavy being an ace does change the complexion of the team). But you have a guy in your neighborhood in Chicago that is a better pitcher than Adam Wilk, that is not good. With Smyly, Turner and Crosby I think they can bridge the gap but if this is a close race at the trade deadline (which I think it will be), I can see the Tigers trading for a 5th starter. This is with or without the rookie bunch being good. Max just can't be trusted, I thought he would grow up and match his mind with his stuff but it has yet to happen. Porcello? Porcello should be good, I still think this is his bust out year despite the last two outings.

What.........the...........F?

Delmon Young was arrested for allegedly assaulting a man early Friday morning in front of a Midtown hotel in New York.According to the report from the New York Post's Larry Celona, cops were called to the hotel at 2:40 AM after a "highly intoxicated" Young pushed the man to the ground, resulting in scratches on the man's arm. Young, who has had anger issues in the past, was charged with assault in the third degree and is in custody while awaiting arraignment. We'll update this situation when more is known.

More to it:The Tigers are in New York ahead of a weekend series with the Yankees, and it sounds like it didn't take Delmon Young much time to find some trouble. According to the Post, Young was arrested and charged with third-degree assault after shoving a man to the ground early this morning.

The Post's source says Young was "highly intoxicated" and was taken to the hospital to get sober before being taken to a police station. He remains in custody, so I probably wouldn't pencil him in tonight's lineup.

Update, 10:20 a.m.: The Free Press reports that Young will be charged with aggravated harassment hate crime. Says an NYPD detective, "Basically, there was an incident at the hotel (and) some anti-Semitic remarks."

I'm glad to see Delmon go. Its too bad it came around like this, but I'm glad to see him go.
 Where is he going?
I am hoping that the Tigers will release him.
I agree..cut bait right now.
I don't understand this thinking at all. The man is on the hook for just one year. He was excellent last year after they got him. Unless it's personal preference, I don't get why you'd want him released.Inge's release made so much sense to me it wasn't funny. Delmon's would not.

Tigers purchased the contract of 1B-DH Brad Eldred from Triple-A Toledo.Tigers manager Jim Leyland indicated that he plans on playing Brad Eldred regularly in the DH slot. "We have the hottest hitter in all of minor league baseball," Leyland said. "I'm going to DH him. How long depends on how he does. He's doing something everyone is talking about. Maybe he can get us going." Eldred was batting .388 with 13 home runs and 35 RBI over 80 at-bats for Triple-A Toledo. He's worth an add in AL-only leagues to see if he can stay hot, but the 31-year-old Eldred has a .204 batting average and 103 strikeouts over 260 at-bats in the majors, so there's no long-term value here. Playing Eldred at DH would put Delmon Young in left field regularly and Andy Dirks on the bench.
It would be pretty cool for this kid (no longer a kid) to experience some success in the majors, and boost a slumping team in the process.

I disagree with this. He had a .298 OBP last year with the Tigers. That is awful. He is a hacker who is a butcher in the field. MUCH rather have a Dirks/Raburn LF platoon.

He is a hacker that put up 28 R's, 8 HR's, 32 RBI's, and a .274 average in 40 games with Detroit last year. 46 hits to 30 K's. I'll take that all day over a Raburn/Dirks platoon. You tell me how Raburn defensively or offensively is any kind of upgrade. The man had 2 hits yesterday which pulled him back into a triple digit BA.....before then it was .091. He is 6 for 47 so far this year and his OBP is a laughable .212.

I have absolutely no idea why you'd want Dirks/Raburn every day over Delmon.

Raburn had a .297 OBP last year and Dirks a .296. Raburn is also horrendous defensively. Really none of them are great options.

Fair enough. They suck too.

Detroit Tigers outfielder Delmon Young apologizes after arrest on harassment charge

Article by: HOWIE RUMBERG , Associated Press

NEW YORK - Detroit Tigers left fielder Delmon Young apologized to his team and fans Friday, just before getting arraigned on a hate crime harassment charge for a fight at his hotel during which police say he yelled anti-Semitic epithets.

Young posted a $5,000 bond at a brief hearing in Manhattan court and was released less than an hour before the Tigers' game against the Yankees. He faces a misdemeanor aggravated harassment charge that entails targeting someone for his or her religious beliefs. If convicted, he could face up to a year in jail.

Wearing a dark suit, Young said nothing during his arraignment.

In a statement, however, Young said: "I sincerely regret what happened last night." He apologized to the Tigers owners and organization, his teammates, family and Detroit fans.

"I take this matter very seriously and assure everyone that I will do everything I can to improve myself as a person and player," Young said.

General manager Dave Dombrowski did not discuss Young's arrest before the game. Tigers spokesman Brian Britten said Dombrowski would talk after he resolved several issues.

Young's jersey hung in his locker in the visitor's clubhouse at Yankee Stadium and his helmet was in the dugout rack Friday afternoon before the Tigers were to play the Yankees, but he was not in the lineup.

"My lineup's up," manager Jim Leyland said tersely when asked if he had to rethink his batting order for the game.

The Tigers arrived in New York at 10:30 p.m. Thursday after their plane sat on the tarmac for 2 hours, 15 minutes in Detroit, according to Leyland.

Around 2:30 a.m., Young was standing outside of the Hilton New York. Nearby, a group of about four Chicago tourists staying at the hotel were approached by a panhandler wearing a yarmulke and a Star of David around his neck, according to police. After, as the group walked up to the hotel doors, Young started yelling anti-Semitic epithets, police said.

It was not clear whom Young was yelling at, but he got into a tussle with the Chicago group, and a 32-year-old man was tackled and sustained scratches to his elbows, according to police and the criminal complaint.

Both Young and the group went inside the hotel, and at some point, police were called, and Young was arrested, police said. Young was first taken to a hospital because he was believed to be intoxicated, police said.

Defense attorney Daniel J. Ollen said accounts of the fight have varied. He said there was video, which he hasn't seen, that showed someone in other group of people said something to Young before the scuffle.

"He clearly reacted to something that was said to him," Ollen said.

Joe Torre, Major League Baseball's executive vice president for baseball operations, visited with Leyland during batting practice but would not speak to the matter.

"We can't comment because we're still gathering information," Torre said.

Young went 0 for 3 with a walk in a 5-4 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Thursday. He is hitting .242 with one home run and five RBIs, is signed to a one-year contract for $6,725,000 and can become a free agent after the season.

In 2006, Young was suspended for 50 games without pay by the International League for throwing a bat that hit a replacement umpire in the chest. Young, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 amateur draft, was ejected in the first inning after taking a called third strike. He lingered in the batter's box, walked away and then threw his bat end over end at the umpire, hitting him in the chest.

The Tigers called up Brad Eldred from Triple-A Toledo after Detroit's sixth loss in seven games on Thursday. Eldred was hitting .388 with 13 HRs and 35 RBIs in20 games for Toledo and Leyland indicated that he would see significant time as the designated hitter.

Young is due back in court May 29.
