***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (3 Viewers)

The Togers will make a deal for a closer and I think that will be the only major move they make. It is still possible they open up the checkbook for Sanchez, but it is a bidding war, and you can't afford to be dropping that kind of dough on who would arguably be only their 4th best starter. It makes one hella a rotation. But They have to look at what impact that signing will have on signing other people.
With the Dodgers getting Grienke, Anibal's options are more limited. Doubt there is any kind of bidding war now.
Do we even know all of Anibal's options? He is the top option now with Greinke signed, this is what he's been waiting for.
Depends on his contract demands, as the best FA pitcher available we'll see quickly if people go for his 6/90 asking price. If not, does he lower? or hold steady while the market goes to the next arm? We'll see, but if there are no bites at 6/90 and he lowers his price I think more teams will enter into the picture.

Tigers ink Royals C Brayan Pena to be the back-up catcher. Very solid defensively and he hits like a back-up catcher would.

They designate P Matt Hoffman for assignment to make room for Pena.

Sanchez biggest problem is that is agent seems like an ###. To laugh at an alleged respectable offer of 4 years $48 million is going to turn off a lot of teams. Sanchez is not an ace. He is an important piece to solidify a good pitching rotation.

Sanchez is all but gone
:goodposting: He wants 6 years and 90 million+. Can't blame him and he could get it. Thanks for the memories Filthy.
I think Boston will be the team that writes that check. Lots of teams desperate for an ace.

 Tough month for Sanchez. He went from being an ace to not being an ace without throwing a pitch.

Tigers were apparently deep into Shields talks with Tampa. Why would you do this if you even thought you had a reasonable chance to bring Sanchez back?

I think that tells me all I need to know, pretty certain now he won't be back. Which is fine btw, I think we'll find other options and can use that money toward extending Mad Max.

My only concern with not getting another starter is there is no room for error. If someone gets hurt or is ineffective, where do the Tigers turn?

Too bad. Getting Shields would have been real nice.Sanchez and Detroit were never going to be a fit, unless Mr I went bat crazy and signed him anyway. Sanchez is 28 years old and ended on a high note with the AL WS team. He's going after his career contract and no one can blame him for that. Good for him, get it while you can.I wonder who else the Tigers are talking with. I'm starting to think that they'd rather go the trade route than oversigning another FA. The only FA starter that I still wonder about is maybe Kyle Lohse but he probably wants more years than he deserves.

This is why the Oliver trade Shukes me. Couldn't get more in return than what looks like a back up catcher? And not even the backup catcher this year. I get doing it for organizational depth but it seems like we gave up on him too quickly, hope I'm wrong.

• ESPN's Jayson Stark tweeted that the Tigers are a "potential match" as a trade partner for the Pirates, who are shopping closer Joel Hanrahan.

Hanrahan converted 36 saves in 40 chances last season with the Pirates, posting a 2.72 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 63 games (59.2 innings).

The 31-year-old has pitched with the Nationals and Pirates in his 6-year major-league career.

Yeah this was a rumor last week that I didn't want to get too excited about. But this is the guy we want, bar none. Mostly because we sat and talked smack with him last summer when he was in the bullpen warming up vs the Tigers and he was giving it to a stupid fan. Guy is nails though. The funny and ironic part is the Pirates will probably use Grilli as the closer allowing them to deal Hanny.

Pirates are said to really be fond of Porcello and also scouted Crosby last year. Can't trade Porcello without having another starter already in house, but we'll see how this shakes out. Hanrahan is in the last year of his deal so Porcello seems unwise, and I'm a Crosby fan so I'm not much for that either. But JH would be perfect!

Porcello for Hanrahan? Hate that trade. Right now anyway. Wait to trade for a late innings guy in July.

Rick Porcello and Drew Smyly are set as the 4 & 5 if Sanchez is gone. So I think it will be a position player(s).

DD: "Hey Pittsburgh, looky here at this unbelievable power threat to be in Brennan Boesch that we just don't have room for in our lineup. He's just waiting to explode and I hate to let go of him, but I guess I will for Hanrahan. Looks like you really have my balls in a blender on this trade."

If that's not enough we also have an unlimited supply of back up catchers.

Sanchez 5/69 offer?

I don't know, I'm extremely indifferent here since I'd like them to give Scherzer an extension now and they also need another bench/depth bat. I like Sanchez, have from the day they got him but I like Scherzer better if I had to choose. Not my money though.

If they can sign Sanchez that would open up Porcello as a trade piece towards that extra bat/bullpen help.Brennan Boesch could be another and no more prospects would be shipped...

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman hears that the Cubs have pulled out of the bidding for Anibal Sanchez. The news comes just minutes after FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported that the Cubs had upped their offer to the right-hander to $77.5 million. The Tigers came back to match the Cubs' original $75 million offer, and it appears that will be enough to get it done. Sanchez posted a 3.86 ERA over 31 starts this past season for the Marlins and Tigers.
Wow.

These numbers are getting crazy.
Yes, these pretzels are making me thirsty.I hope there is a plan beyond this year....including Maximus, FistHer, JV, and Miggy.

Dempster got 2/26

Grienke got 6/147

All things considered Sanchez is somewhere in the middle of those two so 5/80 is neither a great or bad deal IMO. Like I said when they got him, higher ceiling than Fister not as good as Scherzer. This pitching staff is sick though.

Dempster was a bargain. Grienke's contract is horrible. Sanchez probably got what he deserved.

Should be the best rotation in baseball combined with one of the best lineups (at least the top half of the order). Just add a closer.

The Detroit News' Lynn Henning expects Rick Porcello to be traded following the re-signing of Anibal Sanchez.Henning notes that Drew Smyly has the leg up on Porcello for the No. 5 starter job, and the Tigers "won't warehouse a starter in the minors." The 24-year-old right-hander projects to make between $4-5 million in arbitration this winter and is under team control through 2014. Porcello has reportedly received plenty of trade interest, mostly from National League clubs, though CBS Sports' Danny Knobler says the Rangers could be a possibility.
Something is coming but not sure what.

Probably, but it's not the right move.

Howsabout we get Hanrahan and Tabata in a deal for Porcello and something else? Tabata has a nice track record vs lefties and Pitt's got plenty of OF talent.

Why not keep Porcello? Use him in long relief or as the 7th inning guy. Porcello always seems to have good success the first time through the order. Using him for 1-2 innings makes more sense.

Porcello is fine to keep period. They aren't looking to give him away and trading him means losing organizational depth at starting pitching. You can use him as the long reliever/spot starter and he might find a niche. Or Smyly stinks and you put him in the rotation. Keeping him makes sense but if you can get something substantial for him, I'm not opposed to trading him.

Porcello has value, but getting a proven closer has more value. I think a Porcello for Hanrahan deal gets done soon. I am not all that concerned with upgrading SS or outfield depth. Porcello is good enough to be a starter on most teams.

Give me a list of potentially available young bats. A quick fix in the pen is not the answer. We may have what we need already, let them battle it out, and if it is an issue come July address it then.
