***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (4 Viewers)

JJ Hardy.....Porcello/Peralta. I think it helps both teams, probably the o's more tha Detroit though. But I like it. There will be some D back in Detroit.
I'm no Peralta fan and think while we may have missed our sell high point for Porcello he's still a better sell than hold, but man you gotta say this is just an idea on your part. Mini panic attack here. 2011 was Hardy's career year, otherwise he's been often hurt and when he's not he's not on base either.I'm all for going defensive at short stop and moving on from Jay Honey, but do not trade Porcello for a guy that may or may not be worse than Peralta. Trade Porcello for something useful.
Seems like the Tigers still working on getting Hardy, now with the Cubs involved in a three way. The bad part is the Peralta we saw in the playoffs is a better player than Hardy, especially on offense. I am convinced Peralta's lack of range is mostly due to hustle and being ready. He plays somewhat flat-footed and does not give it his all during the season.
Hardy is a superior defensive shortstop, maybe the best in baseball. They wouldn't be getting him for his walk rate.
He is better on D, but does that make up for the loss on offense? I would say during the season, yes. During the playoffs, I would rather have Peralta's offense. It is a deal that does more for the other clubs involved. What Detroit needs most right now is to teach Infante how to turn two.
.264/.327/.422/.750 5200 PAs 145 HRs.259/.314/.427/.740 3900 PAs 133 HRsThose are their career numbers. Which one is which?
I guess I put toot much weight on what Peralta did a couple years ago and how Peralta looked this post season.

About time you guys came around, been trying to tell you that for two years.

Thank you, Nationals!
Yeah, that is a pretty steep price they paid.
It won't seem as steep on those days when Bruce Rondon can't locate
I doubt he's going to be the closer.
yeah, I agree. His winter league numbers weren't impressive. The Tigers have other options including some that probably aren't currently on the roster.
If they don't trade for one (I don't want Jim Johnson) I think it'll be Benoit and/or Coke to open and Villarreal will be the guy they go to if those guys can't handle it. Benoit had some mechanical problems at the end of the year but I was reading a Spanish language article that said Benoit was working on the issue, and also hand-plucking Emu's in Franklin, PA. But my Spanish is hit or miss, so I can't be 100%.

If the 9th inning is a problem in July we can address it then. Save resources for then to see what specific holes need filled then use those resources then to improve them. Don't use them up now when we don't know what holes need to be filled for the stretch run.

Yeah but we are in the same spot we were in 2010, and you were among those who didn't want to sign Valverde. Valverde worked out quite well. So the door is left open for several options, among them was signing Soriano who would have definitely been worth the money in 2013. Had they really wanted Hanrahan or Soriano I think they could have had them, to me that suggests they think they have what they need in house. Closers come from no where quite often, Al Al, Villarreal and Rondon all have the stuff and Benoit and Coke have the experience. Unfortunately Villarreal may not be ready for spring training, which IMO means you have to sign another bullpen arm before the season. Capps, Qualls, Oviedo, Sherrill, Rauch, Lindstrom, Hawkins, Gaudin, Durbin and Camp all still available. Some of those names could be fine with a role with the Tigers. Oviedo may come cheap and he's closed before and was pretty good at it. There are more options this year than in 2010, and as you said if things don't go right you can always make a trade. Or maybe even bring Big Potato back...lol

It's all about trade off's. Spend $ on the bullpen and it's likely coming at the expense of another position. Bullpen's are volatile, can't think of another position close to them in volatility. Don't spend $ on them, spend elsewhere, then take an extra handful of darts and throw them at bullpen guys. See, Tampa. If we had spent the $ elsewhere in 2010 maybe we'd have found an improvement at one of our weaker positions. Would have the difference been offset on the back end with the loss of Valverde? With the advantage of hind sight, doubtful. Ended up not needing the extra W's in 2011 and obviously he was more of a liability last year than anything.

Plenty of teams use this strategy and while it works for some (Tampa, A's, Padres) it doesn't work at all for others (KC, Cleveland, Minnesota, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, etc). From one year to the next bullpen performances vary wildly. Baltimore was the #5 bullpen last year, 27th the year before. Tampa was 4th, 15th and 4th the past three years. Arizona last in '10, 14th in '11, 10th last year. Milwaukee 26th, 6th, Last. Atlanta is the exception, four straight top six or better bullpens. Their key is to develop from within for your anchors as in Kimbrel, Medlen and Venters, then find a nugget on the trash heap like O'Flaherty, and then sprinkle in veteran's like Chad Durbin.

Atlanta is the example, not Tampa. Tampa has great development within their system and then also finds guys on the scrap heap sometimes getting extremely lucky. A's just find whoever they can, and it works for them because they are the A's. In both cases those teams and markets have to be smart, they do extra work to find these middle relievers and 5th OF types.

Other teams like the Yankees and Dodgers who have spent money on their pens have had success. For the Tigers they have to find some ground between the Braves and Tampa. Develop guys from within (Al Al, Rodney, Zumaya, Villarreal, Rondon, etc), pay some guys like Benoit, trade for guys like Coke and get guys off the scrap heap. Well they aren't good at the latter, so you can't do what the A's and Rays do. They are better at developing talent, not finding it and cultivating it elsewhere. Until they are they will continue to consider the Sorianos of the world and they aren't wrong to.

And Valverde was :moneybag: for Detroit, he led baseball in save percentage (93%) during his stay. It ended rather abruptly and unpleasantly, but that contract was well worth the money.

This is the route I think they should go as well. Dodged a bullet with Soriano....that is stupid money for him. Look at all these guys out on the street you could bring in for a cheap 1 year deal. And I believe all have closing experience. Give Rondon his shot but at some point grab one of these guys.

Those Emu hairs he plucks will be used as extentions for that little beard of his.

Where else did you expect Don Kelly to go?
Kelly claims he had NL teams that wanted to sign him. Kelly said he wanted to try and make the Tigers again. Leyland had to give him the "don`t worry" wink.

I'm sure Jimmy is overjoyed. Don will most certainly make the team if Leyland has anything to say about it.
Now he can give all 3 starters in the outfield a day off every series.

Why did the Tigers leave such a valuable player off their protected roster in the first place? Kelly made 1.2 last year. What will he ear if he makes the club..vet minimum? Hard to believe Kelly would turn down a contract offer from another team for a tryout to make the Tigers unless he was assured by DD or Leyland that he has a spot.

The Tigers have reportedly agreed to terms with six of their seven arbitration-eligible players: outfielders Austin Jackson and Brennan Boesch, catcher Alex Avila and pitchers Doug Fister, Rick Porcello and Phil Coke.Agent Scott Boras confirmed to the Free Press the signings of Jackson and Boesch. Jackson agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million deal and Boesch agreed to a one-year, $2.3 million deal.Boras also represents Max Scherzer, who did not reach an agreement Friday with the Tigers. Instead, the two sides exchanged figures.“Usually, we are able to reach an agreement before we file numbers; in his case, we decided it was best to file numbers,” Boras said, adding that he still plans to continue talking to the Tigers in an effort to reach a deal before the arbitration hearing.Jackson was due a significant increase considering he hit .300 with 103 runs scored and 66 RBIs.“A player like Austin is a pretty rare player, a centerfielder that has the offensive capacity that he has and the defensive ability,” Boras said. He’s one of those players that is going to receive a high salary for a three-year player because of his unique skills, both offensively and defensively.”Boesch was received a significant increase. His overall numbers were factored in as well as his most recent performance. Boesch, 27, hit .240 with 12 home runs and 54 RBIs this past season, before he was left off the playoff roster. In thre seasons he has hit .259 with 42 home runs and 175 RBIs.“Brennan’s been working very hard,” Boras said. “He’s been working on making some swing adjustments. We’re looking forward to him competing. Believe me, this is a very, very talented guy who has an opportunity to develop into a quality major league player.”Jon Heyman of cbssports.com reported that Fister will get a one-year, $4 million deal and catcher Alex Avila agreed to a one-year, $2.95 million deal.MLBTradeRumors.com reported that Rick Porcello will make $5.1 million next season.

After what he did in leadoff last year? I would lock him up log term, just my 2 cents.peace

How did BB get 2.3 million? Because Boros said he was working hard this winter to improve?

Jhonny Peralta was a fat pig in 2012. Now he will be less of a fat pig. He acts as if he's really doing something great for the team all on his own. What a bunch of BS. 6'2" and 236 pounds? That isn't an athlete, that's a fatass and he's playing one of the most important positions on the field defensively. No wonder why Detroit has been rumored to be interested in almost every SS this offseason. Good grief.

Jhonny Peralta has lost 18 pounds so far this offseason in an effort to improve his range at shortstop."It's good," Peralta said. "I've never been at this weight since I've been with Detroit. I finished last season at 236. I'm at 218 now. (Tigers general manager Dave) Dombrowski and everybody wanted me working on my range. That's why I tried to get lighter. So I can be quicker, especially up the middle." Peralta has made only 14 errors over the last two seasons, but his range has been among the worst in baseball at short, so losing some extra pounds probably won't hurt. Fantasy owners are more concerned about the career-low .689 OPS he had last season.

He knows he's on the block and doesn't want to leave to a worse team imo. Him, Boesch & Porcello have to be the leaders for next to be traded.

He's on the block for what? Who wants him? Porcello is nice depth. They need to hold on.Boesch is going to have the year in 2013 that I was hoping for in 2012. :excited:

I just want you guys to know that I just played the 2012 Tigers (with Verlander pitching) with my whatifsports team and smoked them 7-0, and when I played the 2012 Twins (with Deduno pitching) earlier I only beat them 5-2. How do you like your team now?

I just played, and Verlander threw a no-no against the twinkles.

The Detroit Tigers have agreed to a one-year, $6,725,000 contract with right-hander Max Scherzer and avoided salary arbitration.Scherzer was 16-7 last season with a 3.74 and struck out 231, a total that trailed only teammate Justin Verlander. He was 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in the postseason, helping Detroit reach the World Series. The Tigers acquired Scherzer after the 2009 season from Arizona as part of a three-team trade that sent Curtis Granderson to the New York Yankees and Edwin Jackson to the Diamondbacks. They also acquired Austin Jackson and Phil Coke in the deal. Scherzer has had a winning record in each of his three seasons with the Tigers and is 52-42 in his career.

Good news on Martinez Reports continue to be encouraging for designated hitter Victor Martinez, who missed all of 2012 after tearing his left ACL. Dombrowski said Martinez's leg strength "is back to normal," he's been running bases for a couple of weeks, and he's been swinging a bat for about six weeks. All that figures to disrupt Martinez's spring training will be the birth of a child, which could happen any day. "You can tell he's in tremendous shape," Dombrowski said. "He's ready to go." Dombrowski reiterated Martinez will be the full-time DH, and there are no plans to have him catch again as a Tiger — despite Martinez's apparent willingness. If he plays the field, and that's a big if, it only will be at first base, on the rare occasion Prince Fielder needs a day off. That has happened only once in the past four years. The Tigers will be a "little careful" with Martinez in spring training, Dombrowski said. But the kid gloves will come off on Opening Day.From The Detroit News: http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130206/SPORTS0104/302060314#ixzz2K7hZfTy3

Sean Casey (Irish American Baseball Hall of Fame) was also very slow. Victor has no chance of ever getting in there.

Tom Verducci of SI.com reports that Jhonny Peralta is named in the records of Biogenesis wellness clinic director Tony Bosch.

Peralta has released a statement through his attorney, stating that he has "never used performance enhancing drugs. Period. Anybody who says otherwise is lying." He is the 12th player overall and the fifth client of Seth and Sam Levinson's ACES agency to be connected to the clinic records, joining Nelson Cruz, Gio Gonzalez, Jesus Montero and Melky Cabrera. Peralta and Montero both do not appear to be directly tied to PEDs, though.
Hope there is nothing to see here. I also hope, as names keep leaking out for this stupid clinic, that Melky Cabrera is the only Cabrera in MLB to be named.

Peralta needs to use more PEDS, and earlier in the year. They didn't seem to start to kick in till after the all star break last year.
