If Kelly is a lock, that means either Kobernus or Berry has to go. It almost has to be Kobernus. I doubt they keep another left handed bat.And that also means Dirks is going to play almost everyday.

I think Garcia is the best choice of that bunch, but knowing Leyland he will go with Berry or Boesch.

Update....Castellanos is interesting....I would like Santiago replaced.

I'd be very surprised to see Berry on the opening day roster. Kobernus is a RH Quintin Berry except he can hit better and can also play the infield if really needed there.my best guesses for hitters 10-13:Kobernus - Ramon - Kelly - Brayan Peña

The Tigers' Prince Fielder was scratched from the lineup for Thursday's game against the Mets at Tradition Field because of a flat tire en route from his home near Orlando to the ballpark.

"He called us right away and felt terrible about it," said manager Jim Leyland, "but they put one of those little 50-mile tires on as a replacement and he wasn't sure if he could get down and back on it.

"So I told him to just stay home."

According to Leyland, Fielder had the flat on the Florida Turnpike near Orlando and could return home easily enough on the emergency tire, but not all the way to the game.

"I didn't want him to chance it." the manager said.

There's no shortage of long trips for the Tigers this spring, however.

"He'll go to Jupiter instead (on Saturday against the Cardinals)," Leyland said.

That's fine by me as long as he's getting at bats with the big club. Leyland seems like he might keep him which to me is dumb, he'll never get his confidence going with seven at bats a week. You can call him up and use him to specifically fill for an injury and since he's getting OF time it gives the team flexibility. Hunter or Dirks go down, call him up. One of the big three go down, call him up. But don't let him rot on the bench when he can get a few hundred at bats in the minors. Seems like a closer by committee to start season but I think they lean on Rondon the most. Hopefully he's learned some lessons but those walks are gonna be maddening at times. Spring training is to tweak stuff though, the real test comes when the games count.

Avila says his espanol is "ok" and Pena is a native speaker. All Leyland has to say and all Rondon needs to learn is, "throw ####### strikes."

Not the worst option when you consider the lefty lineups he would be going up against with all 5 starters being right handed.

But there are a whole host of other measures where he was improved year over year in both 11 and 12 from the year before:K/9, GB%, LOB%, ERA, FIP, xFIP, WAR, SO, ERA-The guy has been getting better every year and he is 24. Whether you think he is an above or below average pitcher depends entirely on whether you hold him accountable for the defense behind him.

The huge outfield doesn't help him as much as others in the rotation and infield defense is something a groundball pitcher does need more.

He is having a great spring and had shown much better stuff, so I am very optimistic about him being a very good option for the Tigers. But to pretend he has not been disappointing is delusional. There is a reason they have been shopping him and getting very little interest. Porcello has something to prove and I believe he will.

This is the type of stuff the Tigers should be using to dangle him out there for a trade, here's hoping that's what they're doing by giving him the 5th starter spot too. If our top 4 are heathly and Porcello has a good start - trade him. Until he gets over the 3rd time through the order hurdle he is simply a very mediocre pitcher. He often starts off games well, but hits a wall in the 4th, 5th, occasionally 6th inning and cannot get past it. Our shoddy defense is not why Porcello hasn't progressed as expected.

I've said this all along. Tigers have control of him for three more years so if you want to trade him, at earliest you do it after 2013. To me you keep a solid innings eater who still has an upside. At worst you use him in middle relief or even in key spots vs righties along the way. For now he looks like the #5 and with Smyly as the #6 I would worry a lot less about an injury like Fister had last year.

I've been all for keeping Porcello all offseason. The trade talk is mostly media-driven I think/hope.I felt good going into last season but it doesn't compare to this season. Have we created a checklist yet?-MVP-VMart returns, batting 5th.-Hunter in RF, adding defense, offense, attitude, veteran.-Unbelievable starting rotation.-Starter depth-OF depth-No Raburn or Inge-Better bullpen than in 2012.
