***Officialish Detroit Tigers Thread*** (2 Viewers)

ive got a giant RONDONER!
LOL

Can't wait to see that on a sign at Comerica Park.

seriously though it would be nice if he can control that slider along with his fastball on a consistant basis. At least be that 7th inning guy to help out Smyly & Benoit close out games.

rumor going around Twins that they would trade Perkins to the Tigers for Castellanos and Porcello. I hope it's not true, Perkins is the only good player on the Twins roster.

Ick. Twins would do that in a second and the Tigers would be morons to even consider it. Castellanos is a potential impact bat and Porcello is rounding into a nice middle of rotation guy. Awful idea from a Detroit perspective.

It would be better for the Twins, but Perkins is in his prime 30 years old, signed to a very friendly contact until 2015. Perkins would shore up the tigers bull pen, and these teams have traded in the past. I guess it depends what is on the market for closers, and who is buying. I think the Twins do trade him, the GM said they will look at all offers. Agreed it could be a little steep for the tigers, just depends how bad you want an all star closer.

An immediate risk is losing Porcello ...the #5 starter. If any of the top four are out for some reason, then we're stretched thin in the starter slot. Smyly and Benoit are doing what they need to do. It seems we need another set-up guy to cover a bad start and avoid overworking Smyly.

Looking at the Tigers' pitching stats, and sorting by wins, it's a sad sight to see the long list of failed relievers who have racked up 13 losses and zero wins.

Not to mention, but in case no one has noticed Benoit is doing just fine as the closer. The Tigers need to bolster the pen with a guy who can pitch in the 7th or 8th. They don't need to burn the farm on a name closer.

When you look at the closers on possible teams the Tigers could be playing come playoff time--Johnson, Nathan, Balfour, Rodney, Rivera, I think Boston makes a move for closer-- they could be the difference maker in a close series. I understand not wanting to give the farm away, but when you are so close to the WS like the tigers are, you think you make the move. I think a good closer could be the difference for possible home field though out the playoffs for the tigers. I will now go back and watch my terrible twins

The Tigers need to worry about winning their division. Home field advantage throughout playoffs is not in the cards.

I'm not sure that any of the available closers are as good as Benoit. Keep him closing and fill in behind him.

The Minnesota press is saying that the tigers would trade castellanos and maybe Avisaia Garcia for a top closer, Twins would like Porcell and castellanos which will not happen for Perkins. Be interesting to see if this is just chatter or the rumors have some legs.

Dombrowski recently made it clear they had no interest in dealing Castellanos. Garcia is available but the Tigers actually have quite a few minor league assets to deal at the moment. If they deal Castellanos it will be for someone the ilk of Matt Garza (and I doubt even then), not Glen ####### Perkins. Keep dreaming.

Well Gastellanos for a Garza type is a WET dream, never happen. You might be surprised what the Tigers give up for a first rate closer. Peace to you DD

If they can get another Miguel Cabrera, they might give up Castellanos. We are talking about the best position prospect the franchise has had in 30 years, they aren't going to give him up for a closer of any kind IMO. Garcia? I wouldn't doubt although he's a future above average starting OFer so he won't be "thrown in."

Today's Chicago Tribune listed a lot of different thoughts about the second half of the season. The first of five game-changing trades ("theoretically"):

Sox give up Addison Reed, Jesse Crain, Matt Lindstrom, Adam Dunn, and cash

Tigers give up VMart, Castellanos, and Rondon

:o

I guess if you don't follow me on twitter (Dr_Detroit19), you missed the day the day the Mariners DFA'd Bondo and just an hour after they did...I found and bought a Bondo Michigan Whitecaps bobblehead. It was a glorious moment. As soon as it was done I said the Tigers should pick him up for organizational depth and to give him one last shot, I think it was a good move (and not because he's my favorite player in the past 20 years  )

Speaking of Toledo...

Valverde, 35, told the Free Press on July 3 in Toledo that he would be with the Mud Hens “two or three weeks. Something like that.”
GTFO :lmao:

Are there 18 other Dr. Detroit's on Twitter?

It's that time of year!

Tigers are not giving up Victor, or anyone else in the everyday lineup, and would need blown away to give up Castellanos. I think we're giving up minor league pitching for bullpen pieces, which si the right move.

The Smyly - Benoit thing is working. No way will any starters be moved. There should be some decent arms we can find for cheap.

Right now Victor is raking and driving the lineup. Only thing I would want is for Victor to play 1B 75% of the time and Prince 25% Victor is superior in the field to Prince.

It is, but going all in with them would be reckless. Add some 7th/8th inning pieces and if the foundation starts crumbling and Rondon's still working on his change shuffle up the deck again.

Verlander is horrendous; never thought I'd say that, but he's bad. Has velocity tonight and can't find the strike zone, brutal.

Cabrera's back is bothering him on top of everything else. I actually hope Verlander is hurt, some sort of explanation for how he is pitching would be good. Is he hiding it? Location is the big issue and he seemed to be having release point problems two months ago but now who knows. Walking guys with the bases loaded, allowing no-doubter homers and not striking out guys is very troubling.

I've heard rumors that the blister he had early in the season is still causing him issues. Not sure how much truth there is to that but could be the reason for poor control/lack of curve

This has to be one of the most depressing first place team to watch ever. There are some players having very good years, but damn they should be winning a heck of a lot more games.

AJAX is fighting it. He's kind of a streaky guy which is hard to watch as your leadoff hitter when he's slumping like this. He's not a leadoff hitter, he's more of a #6 hitter to be honest but on this team he has to play that role. I think if they dropped him in the order and let him relax a bit he'd have more power and these slumps would be much easier to withstand. Glad Dirks is in again today, Tui only hitting .340 against righties so I see why Smoky has him on the bench.

Tigers still need a bullpen arm, but Rondon has really looked good lately with that nasty slider to go along with a 101 mph heater. I think between him, Smyly and Benoit the backend is just one arm away from being a very good unit. I'd like to think Al Al or Villarreal was that arm, but they just aren't close to being able to be trusted. A healthy Dotel would actually be that arm, so finding a similar guy would be enough IMO. I think there are a ton of guys in that same mold but finding one with playoff experience would be best.

Al Al has been horrendous of late, now he's giving up dingers because he's trying to locate his pitches. He looked good last night so hopefully he can get it together because having him pitch well just makes the team better. I really don't think you can rely on him though, even if he strings together five or six good outings. I think Rondon is the better bet.

Great to see VMart continuing his strong hitting.

So DD: There's a family at my church that I'm close to. Dad, mom, and 7 y.o. son are all very avid Sox fans. The 7 y.o. and I have been buddies for years, and now that he's a bit older, we rib each other a bit about the Sox and the Tigers. They all know I'm close to completing a doctoral degree (final stages of the dissertation), and mom called her son over after church today so he could tell me the nickname he has come up with for me - "Dr. Detroit." My first thought was "D_D20," but I would have seriously confused the young boy trying to explain that one.
