I wish I could argue that statement. If the playoffs started today Verlander would be my #3 starter by a #### hair over Fister..and that may change before the season ends. In the past I don`t remember him being so skittish and twitchy on the mound like he is this season.

I'd even think about using him out of the bullpen ala Lincecum. But then again, they can use Smyly, Bonderman, and Porcello for long relief in the playoffs. Leyland just needs to have the cajones to pull JV when it's one of his "off" days.

VMart gets the catchers nod and then gets a play at the plate in the 1st inning, one he nearly played perfectly. This teams needs Avila though, guys are just walking down to second against Pena, Holiday and now VMart. Awful.

I am a big Torii Hunter fan, he comes up with key hits, key baserunning decisions and key plays in the field when they are needed. This team is pretty unclutch outside Miggy, so having Hunter is nice.

Verlander has lost confidence, the walks tell the bigger story of a mechanical problem. He has shown he can throw 99mph deep into a game but he can't locate that pitch, so why throw it? Losing two of three at home vs the Twins is awful, I bet the Indians won't do that this weekend. Cruise control! We got this!!!! No worries!!!!!

sigh,,,Miggy is still behind trout in WAR....

Trout is clearly the MVP this year.

peace

Twinkies are not going down quietly.... Tigers + 6 With the Tigers starting pitching and the games winding down this is almost a lock...right?

The Sux had this division locked up last year with a lot fewer games to go.
Tigers largest deficit after July 17th last year was 3 games.

After this series the Tigers have ten games with the A's, Indians and Red Sox. That'll be the make or break stretch, so having a good weekend in NY is pretty important. Harvey v Scherzer tomorrow, that should be a pretty good game.

But they had that 3 game deficit on September 17 with only 12 games to go. There was a 6 game swing in those last 12 games. If the Tigers had not got hot and the Sux did not lose 10 of 12, the Tigers would of been a huge disappointment last season. This current lead can evaporate rather quickly unless the Tigers keep winning most of these series. The Indians and Royals have a bit of fight in them, and you don't want to give them any blood in the water.

So what's the MLB record for most wins in a season with only one loss? Max has to be getting close.

Unless Cy Young was 68-1 one season.

Looks like it was Roy Face for Pittsburgh at 18-1 in 1959. In 1995, Maddox was 19-2 and Randy Johnson was 18-2 (I think they're about sixth and seventh behind others with just one loss). So Max is in rare territory - new leader if he doesn't lose; should be the best with 2 losses if he has a stumble.

I recall a stat that he might be the only pitcher ever with 10K/9 innings and WHIP < 1.00. He had slipped a bit with the Ks until today. For all that ...Sanchez leads the league in ERA!

Loved watching Max and the team after Max helped his own cause with a hit.

Was down at the Eastern Market yesterday and stopped at Nemos for a couple of cold ones with my wife to watch the game. First time I ever was in Nemos when it was empty...just my wife and I and the bartender for the first 2 innings. Everytime I think Detroit is coming back I see images like yesterday..when the Tigers, Lions or Wings are not playing it was like a ghost town on a Sat afternoon.

Mets might have had a chance if they only had to pitch to Jackson in the ninth, getting two outs from him (tho' one was a sac fly). Otherwise, quite a poor showing by the Mets bullpen. Good to see Porcello get his 10th win. Five pitchers in double-digit wins! Sweet.

Miggy ...just crazy.

I kind of like Cleveland hanging around keeping some pressure on the Tigers, but the Tigers need to be careful because the Indians final stretch is very easy with 14 of their last 17 games against the sux, the stros, and the twinks.

have you looked at the Tigers schedule after the next ten games vs A's, Tribe and Red Sux?

@Royals (3)

@White Sux (3)

v Royals (3)

v Mariners (4)

v White Sux (3)

@ Twins (3)

@ Marlins (3)

Even if they only go .500 the rest of the way, that's still 93 wins. Cleveland would have to go 22-10 to tie the Tigers, if they did that they deserve it.

After watching the games this weekend I really appreciate watching a team that for the most part has been competitive for the last 8 seasons and should be competitve for more in the future. Other than Harvey and 1-2 young guys the Mets pretty much stink,,,,I would hate to be in that phase of baseball again.

With Coke in Toledo and the bullpen shaping up we have very little to ##### about...maybe Dirks now and then and AA walking too many.

Think about it..we are watching one of the greatest hitters and run producers of the modern era on a daily basis..and Miggy made some nice plays at third this weekend..he has a cannon for an arm.

Max could finish the season with one of the highest winning % ever for a starter. Sanchez is a stud #2, Fister is a gamer everytime out and if Verlander was the JV of old it would not even be fair.

Fixed. Mets: :kicksrock:

Every time I think Cabrera has done everything he can to amaze me, he does it again.
Takes a good outside pitch and takes it opposite field over the wall. On the verge of putting up one of the greatest seasons ever.
He could end up with a line of something like 53-160-.360. Amazing. When was the last time we've seen anything like that? eta: Some answers here: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1360806-the-greatest-single-season-performance-in-every-mlb-teams-history

I gotta believe Miggy is tremendously motivated, now that he's 3 HRs behind Davis. Back-to-back triple crowns would be historic, obviously.

And yes, Greco, we need "good JV" tonight.

That double on the 0-2 pitch with two outs showed what we are dealing with. 97mph but belt high, right down the middle. He has mechanical issues, he can't put the pitches where he wants them. I'm ok with a down year, but he's just not very good at all.
