The whole bullpen was awesome last night. It was too bad for that wimpy little single that fell in for a hit.

An interesting argument is not pitching to Ortiz at all but throwing him a first pitch fastball, was really dumb. I think some change-ups low in the strikezone and then some fast balls up around the letters would have been fine. You walk him and it's 5-2 and you have Napoli or Carp with two outs, and they both have been awful in this series. Veras should have never been pulled but Smyly walking Ellsbury was the fatal error.

In the end the Tigers got a spit in Boston. They could have buried them and made them with four of five games facing Scherzer and Sanchez once and JV twice, but they just couldn't make it easy. They never do, never will.

They need to win three games and they have the next three at home. As mad as the Valverde blown save in the ninth last year in game one of the ALCS made me, tonight barely raised my blood pressure. It is what it is, they dominated this game for 7 innings and they won game 1. I see some positives to be honest.

I was at the game and it was a tough one to watch. I was sitting down the first base line..please tell me all those Lackey curves the Tigers were waving at were at least in the zone..from where I was sitting they looked like a balls way outside.

When Cabrera got up I would have bet my left nut he would at least hit a sac-fly. A little concerned about V-Mart...looked like he buckled rounding first...just hope it is not his knee.

Everyone listed that played LF might be gone except maybe Kelly. I think that is the one area where they will look for a new left handed or switch hitting bat to go with their eventual plans for Nick C.

Just to be greedy it would be nice if the new bat could leadoff and drop Ajax down in the lineup.

They have an option on Veras for 2014. The key, of course, is Scherzer (represented by Boras). They already have big contracts with Fielder through 2020, JV through 2019 (option in 2020), Sanchez through 2017 (option in 2018), and Cabrera through 2015. You know Boras will fight for a huge, multi-year contract ...with good reason. Could Detroit absorb that? If so, can they afford Cabrera in 2016? And: Will they look to resign Cabrera in 2016, banking on him having a handful more productive years ahead of him? I suppose a lot will depend on how the next week - and potentially a couple weeks after that - play out.

In the 9th, the second batter was lefty Ellsbury, and if anything develops, the 5th batter was Ortiz ...both are weaker against lefties. Why let Boston get more looks at Benoit? Leave Smyly in and let him build more confidence.

To me it was more about getting Benoit some confidence back. He has been hanging that changeup this post season, and did it again last night. Then...he started to locate that pitch and got out of the inning. If Benoit had been pitching well this postseason I don't think we would have seen him last night.

When they were up 5-1 in game 2 and I was counting the win, I thought they'd lose two at home and we'd have to go back to Boston. Actually this series should be just that, 3-2 Detroit but I have a lot of faith in Max for game 6. Then game 7, anything can happen.

The Miggy error and the wild pitch, which was immediately followed by a ground out, was the difference tonight. Both teams stranded a lot of runners, Tigers bounced into what, 3 double plays?

Only guy I am not happy with is Fielder, he's just awful. I could give a #### about his .340 OBP or whatever it is now, the guy is paid to hit for power and he has zero. Hopefully Alex can go in game 6, that would be a big loss defensively and offensively. Iglesias is a run saver, he needs to remain in the lineup as long as they are playing.

LF isn't hard. Teams hide good hitters that can't field in left all the time. Soriano has been a left fielder for years and he is just flat out terrible. ManRam was a left fielder....nuf said.

I think AAs knee is going to be a problem, plus it looked like he was dazed from the head shots he took all game as well. I doubt that V-Mart will be able to catch because he is dealing with leg issues as well..was a little gimpy running last night.

After this season only SEVEN more season left on Fielders contract.

I could be wrong but it seems like giving these power first basemens monster deals does not end well. Pujols, Fielder, Howard, etc. However, the market value is set so you have to pay them. If Fielder somehow helps this team win a World Series, I think it's a good deal. I hope it happens. Scherzer and Verlander--don't lose faith......

you can add Dunn and Teixeira to that list. Probably Adrian Gonzalez as well. The value of even the best defensive first baseman is debatable but the big problem is that they clog up the left side of the defensive spectrum. Cabrera won't be able to play third forever. He'll have to move to first but Fielder's fat ### will already be there. You have to produce an awful lot to justify a $20+M DH.

Probably time to let it fade away though. Good season, just not good enough. Not sure if Leyland will be back or not but some changes are going to have to be made on offense. I don't think they trade Max, but I think Porcello will be dealt.

It sucks man. I'm not sure how this team didn't have a better fate. I still think they're the most talented team in baseball.....,

Prince Fielder what a bad year. Worst .279, 25, 106 I've ever seen. What a horrible base-running play. He was anemic this year.

Very disappointing. Obviously Cabrera's health the last 6 weeks was a big factor. I really thought despite the shortcomings (no speed, average defense, shaky bullpen) the starting pitching would carry them through. 2nd highest scoring team during the regular season but Miggey wasn't himself, and Fielder's lifetime of postseason choking continued.
