As a Twins fan I can only wish we had a season as good as the tigers. Detroit still is the best in the central and should be back in the ALCS next year and with a little luck in the WS
Wow. But yeah, that'll do it.Bottom line: The Tigers got three starts from Scherzer and Verlander - 21 1/3 innings between them in the series. The Red Sox had one run on the scoreboard at the time the Tigers went to the bullpen in those three games.
Detroit lost all three.

Perez is probably not an every day 2Bman.Infante? Not sure where the Tigers stand with Omar..do they want him back? Or ready to give Perez a shot?
Shin-Soo Choo to leadoff and play RF, and he's easily the first choice. He's so perfect it hurts my head to think about.Needs?
Looks like Dirks will be gone. Have to get a left fielder/leadoff hitter. A player will that can get on base and work the count. Jackson needs to be kept in the 7-8 spot..brings some speed to the bottom of the order. Does our resident Peter Brand (DoctorDetroit) have anyone in mind that the Tigers could fit on the payroll? Maybe Porcello for a leadoff guy?
Kirk Gibson, Bud Black, Mike Maddux, and Jim Riggleman would be my top four choicesSaw that on Freep.Wow -

LF - I reckon Castellanos will be given first shot at that job. Maybe with Dirks as a platoon partner. Jackson will still lead off.Needs?

Benoit? This is a tough one because Benoit pretty much saved the season after Grande flopped again, but looked weak towards the end and in the playoffs looked shakey as well. Still like him as a possible setup man, not sure I like him to close anymore.
Veras? Has a decent one year option. At times he looked unhittable, at other times well you know the answer.
Jim Leyland? At his presser Jim looked like he was going to black out..his breathing was deep and fast and he looked totally spent and worn out. Does the team need a new voice?
Prince Fielder..wow has his image taken a hit nationally, but more important the locals fans have turned on him, and rightly so. Just another horrible post-season in every way. Blunders in all areas of the game. Plus he looked totally different the last few games. like he did not want to be out there.
Infante? Not sure where the Tigers stand with Omar..do they want him back? Or ready to give Perez a shot?

Not having Rondon, our best bullpen arm, killed us. Apparently the elbow is ok and I see this guy in a Trevor Rosenthal kind of role next year.Bullpens were the difference as well as crippled Miggy,
Rondon coming back healthy would be a huge plus but they still need to replace more of what they in have there right now.
Boras can ask whatever he wants, doesn't mean he'll get it. Ride it out, let him walk. This team is going to be broken up after '14 and '15 anyway, he'll be the opening volley in that transition.![]()
DD, do you think they'll sign Scherzer to a monster deal as well, or ride out next year and see what develops?
Sure there is - in a year, he's going to sign a MONSTER deal. And I'm not sure the Tigers can afford another monster deal. So trade him now to get something for him.Boras can ask whatever he wants, doesn't mean he'll get it. I also can't see any scenario where Max is dealt. There is absolutely no reason to deal him, not one. Porcello on the other hand can be dealt and that is where you might land a leadoff hitter.
I don't think that's a good strategy at all. Let him go for a sandwich round compensation pick? No.Ride it out, let him walk. This team is going to be broken up after '14 and '15 anyway, he'll be the opening volley in that transition.![]()
DD, do you think they'll sign Scherzer to a monster deal as well, or ride out next year and see what develops?
I was one of the people surprised that they signed Verlander to a long-term deal though, you can never tell with Illitch. I'm thinking Boras is wanting to get the Max stuff settled this offseason though at his peak value, but I think the Tigers would be ill advised to play that game.
Normally I would agree that those are the two best options, but not with this franchise. VMART, Hunter, and Scherzer are gone after next year, Cabrera after '15. AJAX, Fister, Porcello and Avila all end in '15 also. They are playing for 1-2 years, then they can get players and prospects for any number of those guys I mentioned. Trading him isn't a great idea unless the haul was a ton, re-signing a 30-year-old pitcher to another monster contract doesn't seem like a great idea either. Letting him stay then walk to me is fine in this scenario but maybe they can get him to take a Sanchez-like deal which would be palatable.I don't think that's a good strategy at all. You either trade him now or sign him long term.
I think Scherzer is the guy to sign long-term this offseason since his arbitration price is going to be extremely high anyway.
Sanchez 5/69 offer? I don't know, I'm extremely indifferent here since I'd like them to give Scherzer an extension now and they also need another bench/depth bat. I like Sanchez, have from the day they got him but I like Scherzer better if I had to choose. Not my money though.
I agree re-signing Infante is the #1 priority. There really is no substitute for him in the organization.Normally I would agree that those are the two best options, but not with this franchise. Breaking up the position players isn't something I'm completely against. Infante is going to be sought after though with this 2B crop being so horrible. If he leaves, Brian Roberts would be interesting, but the other options (Casilla, Kelly Johnson, Punto) are really bad. Re-sign Omar, go from there.
Kurkjian just said he was the leading candidate.I'd like to think that the dedication Lloyd's shown over the last 8 years would put him in the position as the front runner to replace Smokey.
Yes. And the best part is they would be getting a new hitting coach.Kurkjian just said he was the leading candidate.I'd like to think that the dedication Lloyd's shown over the last 8 years would put him in the position as the front runner to replace Smokey.![]()

Can you think of any teams that would trade us a bunch of prospects then sign Max to a 5/125? Would Seattle? Cubs? Angels? I just don't know, seems like it would have to be Max for a current OFer and maybe a prospect or two but it would have to be to a team that needs an ace, and has the money/desire. Would the Yankees do it? I doubt it and I don't think their system can afford to be giving away good players at the minor or major league level.I agree re-signing Infante is the #1 priority. Its an interesting point about what the next few years will bring. I always assumed that once VMart contract is up, they will move Fielder to DH/1B and Cabrera to 1B/DH. And then (hopefully) move Castellanos back to 3B. With the staff they have, I think its possible that the window is more than two years. The Verlander/Sanchez/Porcello/Smyly/Cabrera/Fielder/Jackson/Castellanos/Iglesias core is young. And good.
If you can trade Max now and get a load of prospects, then that would really solidify the core for a number of years. Having said that - I HATE to see Max go.
The Max issue is an interesting one. Even next year - he's going to get a ton in arbitration.
That's my reasoning for why Brookens should be considered. It would get him off third base.Yes. Fair point. Maybe the Dodgers? They seem to spend money like its going out of style. They have any prospects? Or how about Texas? They need pitching. Can you think of any teams that would trade us a bunch of prospects then sign Max to a 5/125? Would Seattle? Cubs? Angels? Agree Castellanos needs to be at 3B. Best scenario for him is a LF platoon next year and then play some 3B throughout the season to stay sharp. That's why a Kubel-type guy makes a lot of sense.
Some decent names in there, I highlighted a few I like. Rondon is the closer, maybe as soon as next year so to me just getting three or so good arms is the key. I think Veras has to be back, Coke has to be gone and we could do worse than Benoit because he can start as closer then go back to the 8th if Rondon is ready. Then a LOOGY like Mike Gonzalez or Pat Neshak; Jesse Crain, Mujica or Oviedo as a 7th/8th inning guy. Not a bad crop here.Free Agent Relief PitchersDavid Aardsma

Don't forget about #2, talking with his mouth full.Just think of all the extra time Jim will have to dedicate to his true love, smoking.
Yet as mentioned above, after next year (and VMart being gone) they can DH Prince and move Miggy back to 1st. We can dream, can't we, that Prince has now been shamed into ...something?Too bad Fielder has such a big contract to trade instead of Max, it would open up 1st for Miggy & 3rd for Nick, then a lead off corner OF could be installed.
That would solve any and all bullpen problems, right? If you don't use it, it won't fail you.
