Prediction:
I would say that Dirks will be back for depth and Ortega or Mercedes will make the roster, maybe both. Mercedes is a guy that can be dominant, he's a future backend of the bullpen guy and he will be up at times next year. Ortega is still working on mechanics, but has excellent stuff.
So they need three more bullpen arms most likely. One long guy that could be Reed or Smyly if Porcello returns is in-house, then maybe bring back Benoit or bring in Brian Wilson or Ed Mujica. I like those three best because I think Rondon is ready to be the closer next year, and I think any of those other three would be great 8th inning options. If Rondon isn't ready, they can all close for a few months. But I would be SHOCKED if Rondon isn't the closer by August.
This is why I see no reason in bringing in a $10+ million a year closer, or anyone not taking a two year deal or less. Javier Lopez is the guy I would invest in. Lefty who can pitch the 8th if needed, and lights out vs the other teams big bats. Sprinkle in a Latroy Hawkins or Oliver Perez, and you're set. Tigers do have organizational bullpen depth, and a few of the guys are almost ready to join the big club which helps in picking through free agency.
The team lacks bench depth so Corey Hart would be nice to have as the LF in 2014. Castellanos still seems to need more seasoning, but batting 7th in this lineup is a good way to grow. Peralta could be brought back, or they could go the way of Mike Morse or Raul Ibanez to play some in LF and hit off the bench. Chris Young would be nice also, good fielding OF and a guy with power and speed. McClouth walks a lot and steals, he could be a platoon guy with Castellanos but I think he goes back to Baltimore.
The Tigers biggest issue is in MLB you need to develop bench depth. They have great MIF prospects, a few good lower level OF prospects and a lot of ####. Toledo is filled with retreads and future retreads and Erie had very little talent this year. I like Daniel Fields, he could maybe win a bench spot with a good spring but he's probably still a year away.
2B is the big need obviously. Perez and Worth would be fill, but Worth is a bench player and utility guy and Perez is simply not ready to be an everyday player. So IMO if you like Perez enough, take a flyer on Brian Roberts to leadoff and play 2B and hope you get 100 games out of him. Trading Castellanos for Brandon Phillips should not be considered, but trading Porcello and a prospect for Brandon Phillips would be fine. Not sure I see Phillips wearing the old English D, but stranger things have happened.
Infante is going to get a 3/27 deal or something, and he's worth that. But why bring him back when you have Perez a year away at worst, Suarez and Devon Travis. It's funny because the Tigers 2nd deepest organizational position (behind 3B) is 2B, but we don't have an every day big league 2Bman!!!
The only big $$$ name FA I like out there is Choo, who is everything we need. Great fielder, walks a ton, hots for power and leads off. I'd have no issue with Perez at 2B if we had Choo in RF. I can dream, I can dream.
