RE: Return on Fister: DD basically says he doesn't believe that GMs didn't know Fister was available. He said if there is one it's because the Tigers didn't think his team had the talent available to complete the trade. Thinks they got some "very good" players in return. Called Ray a "premium prospect" who is knocking on the door (to the majors, presumably.) Praised the other two guys as well. Said the Tigers did their due diligence in talking to clubs. He said that unless one of the writers who is saying that GMs didn't know Fister was available comes out with the name of the GM who said so, then it's nothing more than a couple of writers, one of whom is routinely critical of deals the Tigers make, throwing some stuff out there.

I guess Garcia was nailing Fielders wife. Can you blame her though? Garcia is 6-4 230 ripped, Fielder is a 5-10 275 doughboy.
You take that back about my cuddly-wuddly Prince.

I for one am glad that the she-devil is not around our Tigers anymore.

She started with Garcia and then you know Cabrera would be next on her list since they look very similar.

Benoit saying he wants to come back to Detroit. Interesting.

I'd like him back!!!
8th inning?
I can dig it if we can afford him. The way DD was talking today, I'm not sure if they can. $103mm in obligations, $32mm coming in arbitration. If they want to stay at what they spent last year, that's $13mm more. Need another bat, a bench guy and probably two relievers.

Still, nothing nicer than a solid bullpen with those top 3 starters.

I was just looking through the list of professional sports richest owners. Mike Illitch is ranked 12th overall, and third among beisbol owners only trailing the Giants and Rangers owners (Double the Red Sox owner, four times the Yankees owner). He probably didn't get this far making dumb business decisions though, and he's been a terrific owner of the Wings and Tigers.

Mr I>you can't take that $3.2 billion with you, break even with the Tigers for the next few years and leave this earth a happier man.

The best thing about that Forbes article is when you click the name of Giants principal Charles Johnson, it links to a picture of the Panthers DE.

Not to correct anyone but there are about 3X as many RH starters as LH, so platoon hitters who are LH only sit one or two games a week on average.
Platoon hitters don't deserve the money Choo wants.
You are a disaster at the internet.
And you don't seem to have much of a life beyond it.

You constantly mock and belittle those who have a differing opinion than yours. I could care less what you think but wish you nothing but the best.

Former Marlins catcher would've been pretty sweet.

Mr. I. sent a text to DD last night that read. "Get me Chew" DD was not sure if he wanted his big league chew..or to sign Choo.

Fixed, with playoff regrets still lingering ...

I thought I saw Choo at Metro-Airport this morning. Then the rest of the flight exited and it was the Delta red-eye from Seoul.

Read last night that Nick Castellanos has been taking 600 groundballs a day since Fielder was traded and DD informed him he would be playing 3B again. And will continue the 600 groundball a day routine until he reports to spring training. Said that he is thrilled to be back in the IF and at 3B.

I wouldn't expect him to be that great over there this year. Hasn't played there in a season and a half and probably was considered average at best before that. He made 23 errors at Single A in 2011, but should have decent range and he has a good arm. Last year I watched for him to get some time at 3B and was shocked he got not one single game over there. I get he needed OF reps but long-term the Tigers had to know he was destined for 3B. Even if they hadn't traded Fielder, Cabrera was not staying at 3B after '14 and Castellanos is just 22 years old. To me this shows that 3B is not his ideal spot, and he might indeed move to LF after he establishes himself and the Tigers find a 3Bman.

Not sure what kind of home run power he'll have as I still think he's too thin, but this guy should be a doubles machine. If he reaches his potential he will be top ten, maybe top 5 in doubles every year. He can hit, there is no doubt about that. He has struggled at AA and AAA early in the year, then he seems to turn it around once he gets a feel for the pitching. He's the best position prospect since Maybin, maybe the best since Alan Trammell.

Right now the minor league system is trending upward. Danial Fields will be a MLB starting OFer, 2B Devon Travis will be ready in 2016 and he's got star potential (can't wait to see him with Erie next year), and OF Steven Moya has a lot of raw power that scouts really think will translate. SS Javier Betancourt and SS/2B Edguardo Suarez along with Hernan Perez, give the Tigers a ton of organizational MIF depth.

The pitching as per usual, is pretty deep. Robbie Ray and Johnathan Crawford are guys that are rising in the prospect rankings but Casey Crosby just hasn't panned out and his chances of ever being a big league pitcher are fading away. Melvin Mercedes is a reliever in the system that I think could make the Tigers in 2014, he has some evil stuff.

I agree..to me great infielders...or most great defensive infielders are born with good quick hands and it comes natural, there are exceptions and some make themselves into adequate defensive infielders through hard work. There are not too many that come up below average on defense and turn into Gold Glovers.

If I took 600 grounders per day, I wouldn't be able to stand up straight on day #2.

Well if Lombardoozy turns out to be a Ben Zobrist type of utility guy, and Ray is a young David Price we should be OK.

not sure if the tigers have what they are looking for, but who knows?

Just read on rotoworld that the Yankees may be willing to trade brett Gardner now. I wonder what that would cost? Gardner may be a nice addition.
from sbnation:

Gardner, 30, was the team's primary center fielder in 2013, but now appears to be on the outside looking in for a starting spot. Ellsbury will certainly take over in center field while Soriano and Beltran will likely take the corners. The Yankees do not have a fulltime DH, so there could be some shuffling that would help Gardner see playing time. Furthermore, given the age of most of the New York outfield and Ellsbury's struggles to stay healthy, Gardner could have value as a potential fill-in in case of injury. However, the Yankees may feel they can get better value out of him in a trade.

Over 145 games in 2013, Gardner hit .273/.344/.416 with a league-leading 10 triples. He also stole 24 bases -- a nice number, but far from his 2011 campaign when he swiped a league-high 49 bags. An elbow injury in 2012 caused him to miss all but 16 games.

With Gardner having just one year of team control remaining, the Yankees could have a tough time attempting to find a team that will give them anything more than a back-of-the-rotation type starter. Gardner's batting line profiles very similarly to Norichika Aoki who has hit .287/.355/.399 over a two-year career. Aoki was recently traded from the Brewers to the Royals in exchange for Will Smith, who thrived in a bullpen role last year but has struggled as a starter.

Tigers Sign Rajai Davis

I like the move. A speedy 4th outfielder who can make a strong platoon w/ Dirks in left and sub for Hunter and Jackson when they need a day off. Also a great late game pinch-runner.
Great under the radar signing, his splits vs. lefties are great and as every Tigers fan knows we have been in dire need of speed. When Quintin Berry is an asset you have speed issues!

I like Davis a lot, but if you ever owned him fantasy, you know he's extremely streaky. Like going two weeks without a hit kind of streaky.

With Dirks, Davis, and Kelly you would think that another OFer is out of the question. I think extensions for Max and or Cabrera are coming soon.

We still need more relievers though. Hopefully Benoit comes back but guys like John Axford are still floating around out there seeking deals.

He's a nice pickup who can do some things to help a ballclub. But in spite of his speed, Davis isn't a very good defender. He's capable of manning a corner slot but he'd be a negative if he had to fill in for Jackson in CF for any period of time.

Yeah was just talking to my buddy about the situation. He said "Choo is out unless they trade AJax" which is not a good idea at all. Choo needs to be playing RF to get the most out of the contract and despite him being a superior hitter to AJAX, Austin is a plus CFer who still has arbitration time left. I also think he'll be much better hitting 6th or 7th in the order.

Corey Hart is probably a decent option also, Jason Kubel, Andres Torres, and Rajai Davis a few others that would be cheap and good platoon options.
:)

Looks like blocking the plate by catchers will be illegal starting next season to eliminate home plate collisions. Probably a good change.

I like the Davi signing. Was hoping the Sox signed him as a backup CF, 5th OF guy.

Slight tangent, but thought I would plug a friend of mines book who happens to be a huge Tiger fan.

http://endofbaseball.com/bio.php

I know this guy cause he donated a kidney to a friend. I also donated a kidney to my dad, so we connected when the planning was happening. Anyway, I read the book. I liked it a bunch

Apparently Benoit is seeking a closers job, but has "left the door open" to return to Detroit.
I think he would be perfect back in his 8th inning spot, Rondon and the others the 7th on back.

Bosox and Yanks both interested in Benoit.
Padres seem like the best fit if he wants to close.

Tigers offered Joba 1/$3mm yesterday. I think he's a good bounce-back candidate if he can stay healthy, seems like Yankee Stadium is also part of his problem.

Tigers didn't lose or take anyone in the Rule 5 draft.
