Orange is the New Black - Netflix series (1 Viewer)

Watched OITNB and it was alright. Started watching House of Cards and I'm absolutely loving it. Great writing.

It got me thinking, though - how is Netflix making any money on it? They aren't selling ad space in the show, and the budget has to be a pretty big number with a guy like Spacey doing it. Is Netflix getting enough subscribers coming in just for that show to offset it's cost? I understand they are likely also getting product placement money (Apple and the like), but I don't see a lot of that and I'm actually looking to find them.
The more people subscribe to watch these shows, the more money they make. That being said theyre probably losing a ton of money right now. Its an investment
That's what I'm thinking. Who's subscribing to Netflix just for these shows? I'm subscribing because of the hundreds or thousands of others, and did so even before they had their own shows. I'm loving the extra show that I'm getting (and loving) for no additional money - I'm just trying to figure out what's in it for them.
Its gonna take time and alot more shows. Theyre trying to start a whole new format for tv shows. As word of mouth increases about these shows more and more people will subscribe. At least thats their plan. Maybe people wont sign up for just two shows but eventually when they have 10 new shows and word of mouth starts getting out that these shows are great the subscriber list will expand dramatically.
I'd think it's working quite well.

According to my vast research (wikipedia), they matched HBO in subscribers at the end of 2012, at around 30 mill, and seem to adding about million more per month (36 million in April).

It does seem like a lot of people I know have ditched cable entirely and just subscribe to Netflix instead. These Netflix original shows will make that switch even more attractive to people. I could see the shows bringing in a lot of new subscribers.

I don't know.. I coudl see people subscribing just for one show.. Cripes, I subscribed to showtime just for Dexter for the first 5-6 seasons. i've talked to a couple of people who have subscirbed to Netflix to watch house of cards... it is one of those things that allows folks one more reason to try it.

I'm sure plenty of people subscribe for one show, but I'd think the shows are more about maintaining and slower growth at this point. Neflix added 630K subscribers from April-June (AD dropped May 26), which was lower than expected and I think less than the number of new subscribers they'd been getting previously.

They are already up around 37 million subscribers and you have to wonder how many more are even possible. Plenty, I'm sure, but how many people do you know that don't have Netflix? I know I don't know many.

For me, it probably kept me around. About a year ago, I was starting to wonder if it made sense to keep both Netflix and Amazon (and Amazon's pretty much a no-brainer).

Then AD came out, followed by Orange, and I don't imagine I'll ever leave.

That, and the Amazon user interface is just brutal.

I like this show the same way I did Lost. It has me interested in characters thrown together (via prison, instead of a plane/island), shows how they live in a make-shift society, and uses flashbacks to give us their story on how they got there.

Just watched the first episode. Decent story so far.

Good laugh at the lady slapping the girl. "That's my mom."

Unbelievable about the maxipad burger... ewww.

I've read through the thread a bit after watching the shows this weekend. Geez, there are some anal retentive people in this thread. It makes me wonder where some of you work or live or socialize. Don't knock the prison life until you've been a part of it. Some things seem illogical but really are quite reality if you were in the moment. Some things may seem unbelievable, yet, had you been there it would all be real to you.

Since we are not walking through the lives of College or Crazy Eyes or whomever, their "niceness" or "behavior issues" may seem odd but that is who they are. With more interaction, and we can't since its tv, we would better understand them.

The one thing I can take away from this thread, like other show threads, is that footballguys.com has a plethora of great screenwriters or story writers. Unfortunately, I have never seen the resume of these people nor have I heard of any tv show/book they have written. Odd, huh?

The thing with the nail and electric outlet... may have been a bit of electro shock therapy for the lady. She needed a jolt. Maybe she has some Schizophrenia or bi-polar in her. We saw a little bit of this when College was in the SHU. Was that person talking to her real?

Good concept, very sloppy writing. Too many unbelievable decisions so they could force their way to the season finale they wanted to make.

so im assuming 2nd season will be almost a new cast since Chapman will be in max security with Claudette. hope this comes on Netflix soon I just finished and need more

Started watching last night. Kind of meh so far.
The show transitions from being Piper-centric to incorporating everyone else's stories beautifully. It gets better then.

It also takes time to get used to the idea of a great drama featuring Jason Biggs so heavily (that dies down a little too).

And Piper gets better too. Schilling is phenomenal.

i was kind of the same. it has its moments for sure but it is hardly outstanding. I'd give it a "B-" overall. it's nice change of pace but it is kind of a mess. it reminds me of Kohan's previous project, "Weeds", and that's not a good thing over a long haul.

Yep. If Weeds is a guide, this is going to go from decent to terrible in a hurry.

I dont watch this show, but they asked my parents if they could film in their driveway today. Parents said fine. Wonder if it will be on the series

Hopefully, it won't be. I was hoping they were phasing out Jason Biggs.

This is assuming your parents house doesn't resemble a prison.

nope, regular suburban block

ETA: they are shooting around the whole neighborhood.

The prison is shot a town or two away at an old psych ward

Everybody loves being in prison according to this show.

Pretty decent tv but I thought they glorified what prison life is like.

I didn't know it was by the person that did weeds, which is a show I really didn't enjoy (watched first season and a half).

I think that is false, look at HBO/Showtime, people sign up to those channels just for one or two shows they like like Game of Thrones/Homeland. If Netflix can have a few shows that are MUST WATCH for people they will add many new subscribers.

Finally got around to watching this. I like it quite a bit. Very good writing most of the time (although there are a few hokey moments here and there). The season ending was a tad underwhelming - I was expecting something more interesting concerning the Piper/Meth Teeth Chick showdown - but overall I enjoyed it a lot and am definitely down for future seasons.

Also, I knew I recognized the crooked smile of one of the older gals that is often in the background, and sure enough, it is the same actress that plays Cliff's girlfriend Maggie on Cheers.

If you've got an hour to burn, they did an hour long panel that was pretty interesting.

Pretty interesting dynamic with this cast, as you might imagine.

Nothing too spoilery, though they do have the actress that is playing someone named "V" in the new season and give a little of her background (seems like she's going to be an awesome character, btw).

I'm going to :orangedot: this. I'm planning to start watching it after football season.
Started two weeks ago and just finished. I like the show. I'm looking forward to season two.

I didn't realize until reading the thread right now that it's based on a memoir by the real Piper. That makes it even more interesting.

I watched the first two episodes already and my thoughts are as follows:

Episode 1:

Very good, and a good, albeit ####ty resolution for Piper, resolution to the Alex/Piper storyline (for now, at least, it seems). I fear the loss of that dynamic will hurt the show, though.
Episode 2:

Honestly, I was bored out of my mind throughout most of this one. I don't think we saw Piper at all, and the whole story about the inmates dressing for an interview was really lame and boring. Plus, they are focusing on a bunch of inmates we hadn't seen previously, and with the loss of Alex and Porn Stache (for now apparently), the next few better be good or I will start to worry that the show already hit its high mark.
