When he starts out with an "I think" regarding a prediction about talent evaluation, I take out a huge grain of salt.

What makes you say this?Nolan is the one who repeatedly presses the QB competition no matter how detrimental it is to the team. Personally, I think it's an ego thing between him and Smith that has lingered from last year but regardless, Nolan is the one behind this bull#### competition at QB. Martz, on the other hand, keeps hinting that he prefers to work with one QB.

Funny, I was just about to comment on the same thing. I am unsure whether I have ever seen a sentence that started with "I think" and had "believe" in it for good measure. Just say you don't have a clue, King. It is much more concise.

I understand your reservations concerning King. However, he's not evaluating the talent. Look at the line in bold. He's reporting the consensus among people "around the 49ers". Is this coaching staff? Front office? Beat writers? I have no idea but it's not his opinion. Given the context - Nolan's job - it does make a little sense. Also, whoever starts week 1 is no guarantee to be the same starter at mid-season if the team struggles at all.

However, I'll be watching to see how O'Sullivan looks in his appearance. I always thought he had great tools, but makes terrible decisions. If he's matured under Martz' wing then heck, you never know. Reminds me of another Delhomme.

O'Sullivan is a Martz guy. He knows his system. I saw this last year in Detroit, although it was not starter, it was second string. O'Sullivan played a lot more than Orlovsky. That was a Martz call, and this one is too.

O'Sullivan doesn't have a great arm, he is not all that accurate and his decision making is below average. The only reason he is starting this game is because Martz wants him to, and that is because he is the only QB to know his system. His talent level is that of a 3rd string QB.

I think this actually says a lot more about the backup personally. Shaun Hill from all reports I have seen has been awful and can't digest the playbook. Alex Smith is cerebral and I believe will win this "open" competition. He has been adequate in camp, but many have commented that he is digesting what they are tryng to do. I think JT O'Sullivan will be the #2 QB, but they want to see how he responds in competition. He has been in this system a long time so that probably is the right call too.

My guess is Martz told Nolan that the order looked like this: Smith, O'Sullivan, Hill and Nolan wanted to see O'Sullivan before agreeing to this.
