I haven't checked in since about a year ago. Is Otis still fasting?
I got a shoulder injury about a year ago (probably
SIRVA) that prevented me from doing a whole lot other than walking. I couldn't do a single pushup. I couldn't shoot a basketball. I couldn't apply shampoo with my right hand.
Eventually, as I started to regain some range of motion, I got into swinging light Indian clubs (one pound, then two pounds). It hurt in a good way, so I did that a lot. I started regaining some strength and could do a single pushup. Then two. Then I started to improve pretty quickly and my pushups are now back to normal.
I gave
heavy club-swinging a try. I couldn't do the overhead stuff at first, but I think the basic swings (inside circles, outside circles) really helped because of the tractional force on the shoulders. Eventually I could do some overhead stuff (two-handed shield casts, then one-handed swipes), and now I can finally do one-handed mills and reverse mills with a 15-pound club. (Though just for a few reps, and not terribly well.)
I can also shoot a basketball again, though it takes about ten minutes of warm-up before a free throw is within my range, and another few minutes to get to the top of the key.
Anyway, I think the heavy club-swinging is fun, and it reinforced for me how important that is. The best exercise is the one you'll actually do, and I'm way more likely to do something if it's fun. For me, that often means doing something that involves learning a skill. Club-swinging fits into that category. So does jumping rope (which I've started doing recently). So does juggling while wearing wrist weights (ditto). A couple decades ago, I used to have fun rollerblading, so I just ordered some rollerblades to start that up again.
The thing I've been doing the most lately, which doesn't involve any skill so I have no idea why I think it's fun, is
rucking. I like walking
way better than I like jogging. Rucking is as enjoyable to me as walking is, but provides more intensity. If anyone is looking for a new fad to get into, I highly recommend giving rucking a try. And club-swinging. (We'll see how the rollerblading goes...)
