Otis fad diet thread — yoga, fasting, and kevzilla walking on🚶‍♂️ (2 Viewers)

Stayed up too late last night, decided I need the sleep more than I needed the exercise this morning. I also decided I needed coconut shrimp for the BCS premiere, so I'll definitely be out there tomorrow.

Lovely and cool this morning, but the climate and my predilection for morning exercise are aligned for the next five months. Time to make hay while the sun gets ready to shine.

No update in a bit.  Don't really have a good reason.

Weekend was about the same.  Very active but drank too much.  Made some good and poor food decisions.

Yesterday I made good food decisions, did some yoga, and walked the dog.  Also didn't drink.

Will see what happens today.  I need to string together a few weeks of good decisions and lose a few lbs., but I'm also happy just maintaining the 190's.

Wow that's amazing.  7-8 lbs a month is tough for even a month or two but for a long as you've done it, making it through the holidays and pandemic months and everything else, serious kudos.   What were you doing that worked for you?
Honestly, just watching calorie intake and walking between 7,000-10,000 steps per day.   I eat "cleaner" than I was as well (less additives, preservatives, sugars, soda, etc).

I also learned to not overeat so much at night.  Being empty nesters, it is extremely hard to cook to 2 without overcooking leading to overeating.  There is a place near me called Clean Eatz (https://www.cleaneatz.com/ ) that specializes in "clean" meals.   They sell frozen meals that are outstanding and do the trick.  Perfect for a lunch or dinner.

The scale says I gained 2.1 pounds this week. I didn't do a good job of dealing with my stressors. But the thing is, there will be more stressors next week. No one leads a stress-free life, so better adaptations are necessary.

Oye. Been a minute. Still cranking many miles. Still enjoying many beers.

Easter Sunday, I went skiing. It was epic. A foot of fresh powder. Plus the pond skim(google it). And an epic after party. At which, I decided to dance the whole time. 4500 active calories burned.      I couldn’t believe the numbers.

logged a half marathon at work tonight.  Drinking my 3rd beer now. At 3 am

all is well?  😂😂. It most certainly is. :pickle:

Kinda slow in here.

Weekend is over, moving on from those mistakes...

Did a 50-min full practice yoga session this morning and walked the dog a bit ago.  Plan to eat well and stay off the booze this week (until Friday).

My new rowing machine should be here this week, will report back.

Keep up the good work!

Turned off myfitnesspal so I could drink guilt free for a while after easter.  I have been eating well all day then blowing it up at night, as one does.

Went for my first jog in over a month tonight to test out my hamstring.  It's going to take a while to get back to where i was, but I made it through a ten minute jog injury-free.  Will need to take a day off between runs and keep the distance and speed way down until i feel comfortable again but this is a good start.

I have done a ton of yard work and other homeowner stuff this last week.  Ripped out a vine that was bringing down a pine tree in my yard and while i was leaning my full weight into it, it wouldn't come down from the tree but ended up pulling up the roots out. Absolutely shredded the lawn, went ### over tea kettle as it finally gave way, but that thing was enormous and was starting to make its way to my house.  Took three full lawn and garden bags to pack it up after i cut it into bits. F that thing.  Still have a few more full days of work to do to get things where i want them but I'm making progress on some things i let slide during the pandemic.

Overall I probably added back a pound or two that i lost.  That's another week or so of dieting to make up for it.  But it's good for the mental health to take a break here and there.  Back to the grind.

Only got a dog walk in yesterday.

Did a 50-min yoga session today and walked the dog.

Eating has been decent this week.

Keep up the good work.

Monday 10 min slow jog

Tuesday rest

Wednesday 15 min slightly faster jog

Finished today without pain or soreness again which is good. I am still trying to get a sense of where my fitness level is because i got hurt while i was still getting back into shape.  I didn't feel like like i was running out of gas or have any real leg soreness so I'm probably going to test out 20 min, but then go to 22 minutes instead of continuing 20, 25, 30.

It's time to

We can share recipes if you want.  I have a bunch of things I cook for one or two when I'm dieting that are healthy but still scratch the itch for something fun.

A usual month for me on a 1500 calorie diet includes

Stir fry shrimp.

Seared scallops

Chicken quesadillas

Turkey chili

Eggs Benedict

Pizza

Lots of pizza

Cheeseburger and fries

Egg and cheese sandwiches

Cowboy caviar

Turkey avocado wrap

Southwest chicken salad

More pizza

I'm not a "clean eatz" guy and my sodium has been high recently but I've been pretty good with getting my fiber and protein and keeping my calories down.   If you're interested in any of these let me know

PIZZA!!!!   My fav!

Cowboy Caviar sounds interesting

Did I mention Pizza?

Lol

Thanks!

I haven't walked most of the week. Don't know when I will again. Starting to think it's the left sacroiliac joint that is the issue. It's maddening, because it doesn't really prevent the walks from happening, it just makes me wish I hadn't the rest of the day. Will re-evaluate after a full week off.

The scale says I gained 1.3 pounds this week. Not eating clean enough.

Decided to try some treadmill jogging today. Not my best idea.  I’m going to have to go full couch to 5K and just alternate 2 minutes running and 2 minutes walking for  2 to 3 miles for awhile.

LOL, I know there’s nothing scientific about this, but after struggling with a plateau for over two weeks, it’s like my body said, “if you insist on doing this, I’d better drop some weight, you #######,” and I dropped four pounds.

Wow, haven't updated for a bit.

I ended the week strong, with good eating but had some booze early in the weekend.

Weather was great here all weekend and I worked my butt off in the yard/garden and walked the dog everyday.  Also got my first session in on our new rowing machine yesterday.  Just 5k over 30mins.  I think I'm really going to like rowing.  I am a little sore this morning.

Very rainy here today, will see what kind of activity I get in.  At least the rower is fair game while it rains outside.  Could probably also use a yin yoga session to limber up.

Keep up the good work!

Yesterday was another good day.  Rowed about 6k, walked the dog 1.5 miles, and did a light yoga session for 30 mins.  Ate well and no booze.

Keep up the good work!

Hello?  This thing on?

Only had one drink so far this month.

Been hitting the rower, walking the dog, and doing enough yoga to stay limber.  Not sure what the scale says, as I've been eating (within reason) what I want but I feel pretty good.

Keep up the good work!?!?

Getting a bit more momentum back.  It's weird that while the number on the scale is moving pretty slowly now, I'm wearing clothes that I wore when I was a good 30 lbs lighter than this before.  I'm still a bit over 290 and wearing 42 inch waist jeans (and not relaxed fit or anything, just the normal Levis cut).  And while nobody should brag about a waist size starting with 4, it was starting with 5 at the beginning of March.

Starting testosterone replacement therapy next week.  Hopefully it will help me ease into strength work before I move up north (where I've picked a gym that does metabolic training).

Staying off the booze, walking the dog, and rowing daily.  Really digging the rowing machine, starting to find my groove on that thing.  Eating reasonably but not tracking.

Hope everyone is doing well, kinda quite in here.

Keep up the good work!

Forgot to check in last Saturday. Gained 0.8 pounds. But I've walked every morning this week. It doesn't make my back better, but it's not making it worse.

On Tuesday,  I did my first outdoor run/walk since injuring my hamstring. Accidentally left my heart rate monitor app running and drove 25 miles, came home to a bunch of congratulations for my longest run and fastest mile, two miles, etc.   I WAS IN A CAR YOU DUMBASSES

Tonight i did 15 minutes of non stop jogging on the treadmill plus some fast walking... then got roped in to going to the local fair... my kid is starting to get into the flippy spinny rides and I'm the only one who will go on then with him... everything is sore and I'm erroneously hoping wine is the cure for nausea.... but I'm getting back into the swing of things with running and while my ankles and quads feel it a little, my hamstring feels all right. Hoping I've turned a corner.

Down 25 now -- so that's another 14 between March 8th and today.

The Second Act will be much harder I think, but that's enough weight that I look better already.

And I definitely notice some physical benefits as well.  Especially that a tendon above my ankles doesn't hurt from time to time when I walk or mow now.

Keep on keepin on everyone!

Haven’t checked into here in a while. I got the results from my endoscopy back and everything looked 100% in the normal range so I get to start introducing food groups back into my diet. So far soy and seafood seem to be okay.

Weight has basically plateaued at 181. One week I’ll be 183-184 and the next I’ll be back to 181, but i am not seeing anything lower than that.  Honestly I’m okay with how things are going even if I’d like to shed another 10-15 because I feel healthy

My cycling has leveled off a bit. I’m still hitting my 75 miles per week, but it almost feels like I’m being lazy compared to the 90-125 per week I was doing when I was training for my race. Wondering if I should register for another one just to get that motivation back. On the positive I just completed a 5 week program on the Peloton and increased my FTP from 209 to 223. In February I think I was at 189, so it feels like a validation that I’m doing some things right.

Still keeping on.  Making mostly good food choices, and getting around 60mins a day of exercise between walking and rowing.  Did have a little booze this weekend, but life stressors are kicking up (may be buying a house and selling our current one).

Keep up the good work!

Just checking in. Hovering around mediocre to out of shape all 2022 and have finally caught some rededication and got it to stick. Playing basketball at least once a week, bike rides with wife on weekend, and I'm doing walks with a weighted vest because running on concrete kills my knees and shins.

We call that rucking.  Been discussed here a bit.

Was able to push my completely dead car out of my overgrown lot so the tow truck could get it to the dealer today.  I think I would have literally died if I tried that two months ago.  Am now annoying my wife by constantly texting her GIFs from World's Strongest Man competitions.

same old same ole over here.  1 too many beers most nights.  many miles logged most days.  staying right around 182-186.  i need to lift weights again.  i can feel myself getting puny.  perhaps some pushups?  and i still dream of doing yoga regularly.

I'm never going to do a full yoga session regularly, but I've decided that a little bit of daily yoga is far better than none. So I've settled on four yoga poses that I try to do every day.

Downward dog. (I just added this today -- been doing the others for a while.)

Malasana. (Just sitting in a relaxed deep squat.)

Horse pose. (Someday I hope to do five minutes. I'm not close.)

Passive hanging from a pull-up bar. (Not actually a yoga pose, but should be. A cure-all for shoulder issues.)

To me the biggest benefit of yoga is that it works pretty much every muscle, even the little ones. When you do balance poses, you put stress on whichever muscles are weakest in keeping you balanced.  When you hold poses like warriors you work muscles to exhaustion. Almost everything you're doing is working your weakest muscle groups.

When you choose a handfuln of yoga poses are you accomplishing something in particular?  Or just not a fan of yoga?

Downward dog because my hamstrings are always super tight, and that seems like a great hamstring stretch. I've had lower back pain recently and it might have something to do with my tight hamstrings. (I can't do anything resembling a real downward dog. For now, my hands are elevated on a bench.)

It's actually just coincidence that the other activities (except hanging) happen to be yoga poses. I'm doing them independent of yoga.

Sitting in a deep squat is recommended by a zillion people on YouTube. Ido Portal is a big fan of it, and Katy Bowman, and the Bioneer, and almost everyone else I can think of that I follow in the fitness world.

What yoga calls the Horse Pose is the Horse Stance from the shaolin monks, popular in every martial art. If you believe everyone on YouTube (and why shouldn't you?), its benefits are legion.

Finally, passively hanging from a bar is magic for the shoulders. There's a book about it by John Kirsch, discussed on many YouTube channels (I like Bob & Brad for shoulder issues). The book is fine if you want a thousand anatomical details, but the actionable takeaway is just that hanging changes your shoulder structure and can heal all of the most common causes of shoulder pain. (If you can do it, that is. Some injuries will prevent hanging until after they've healed a bit.)

So I'm trying to do those things for reasons independent of yoga, but I do try to take a yoga-like approach to them -- with conscious breathing, in a meditative mind frame.

I recommend googling each of those things. I've been doing malasana for decades (beginning with squatty potty), horse pose for months, and I think they're both great. I've been hanging from a bar for about a month, ever since my shoulder's been well enough, and my progress (in terms of pain-free range of motion) shot up like crazy as soon as I started doing it.

I've been doing a couple rounds of Sun Salutation every morning (well, maybe ~70% of the days) for a few years and it's helped my lower back pain quite a bit.

But I really came to post this:  A few months ago I took 2 weeks off from drinking, tracked calories every day, ate pretty well, and lost weight.  Then for my birthday (month long celebration  ) I drank, didn't track calories, ate a bit too much and gained weight.  I haven't had a drink this week and I've been tracking everything I eat and I lost weight.

If only I could figure out a plan to help me lose weight/keep weight off

We enter the dog days of summer, and trust me, I'm the poster boy for our collective flagging spirit. We have to remember that the forces that conspire to make us gain weight never take a day off.

The scale says I lost 4.4 pounds this week, which I deserve. But I haven't posted a loss since March, so it doesn't mean much unless there are more good results to follow.

Nice work on the loss and also giving people the luck in the butt we need.  I'm back in.

140g protein

5g fiber

Under calories. Did some grocery shopping and picked up some fruits and vegetables but i wasn't planning on starting today so I didn't have better stuff on hand.  Feels good to be back.

I know I've been a huge yoyo and frankly covid put me in a idgaf mode and I just got lazy and fat.   Finally took it seriously and started back with dirty keto. Don't need a lecture about keto it's the easiest for me to lose and then work diet back in. The biggest positive it it stops me from eating freaking cookies and candy. I'll have a diet Pepsi here and there for the sweet craving.  Still can't work out too much because of lingering hip and back issue but it's better

Anyway hit mini goal 2 today.

Now just 14 pounds for mini goal 3

And 34 to get me to ultimate goal of 179.

Then I'll settle between 180-185. I'm perfectly happy with that.

Kind of a weird week, because I have to be on a low fiber diet until I get a colonoscopy on Tuesday. But all the stuff I’ve been relying on (legumes, nuts, cruciferous vegetables) are fiber dense. And I still don’t want to spike my blood sugar, so I can’t rely on refined carbs (though my CGM shows that I can tolerate white pasta and rice so long as I stick to reasonable portion sizes).

Which leaves animal products. I figure I can have one week where the saturated fat is back where I used to have it, but I miss my damn almonds and white beans.
