Otis fad diet thread — yoga, fasting, and kevzilla walking on🚶‍♂️ (5 Viewers)

4-3-23: 194.0. Down 0.8 pounds. I have lost the 5 pounds (5.2 to be exact). Finishing the basement is good exercise. Not having power for over 24 hours this weekend helped too. Can’t eat as much when it’s difficult to repair. Let’s keep it going.

I took the plunge Monday and had my first semaglutide injection. Been reading about it for several weeks and determined it was worth taking a chance. Not morbidly obese, but I do fit the definition for obese (6'1", ~245lbs). With my 50th birthday approaching I feel like I really need to get my weight under control.

I will say that my appetite has noticeably lessened in a matter of 2 days. It's a bit unnerving to be honest. We'll see how it goes.

Reading up on this drug, I'm learning that it quells the user's desire for alcohol (and smoking cigs). Have you found that to be true if applicable? Man, if this drug can solve obesity and over drinking, it's gotta be close to a miracle drug, no?
I don't smoke, so I can't speak to that. My alcohol intake has certainly lessened however but I'm really only a beer drinker so it makes sense because it's all about fullness.
I had my 5th injection yesterday, which was a step-up to 1 mg. The place I'm using starts you very slow with first 2 injections at .25 mg, then 2 more at .5 mg, and now I'm onto 1 full mg.
First month I lost 7 lbs, which isn't earth shattering at my size. However, I've been extremely inactive since I've been busy with work. As the weather gets better and I get outside for much more exercise (typically disc golf). I've also read that faster weight loss starts to come once you work up to 1mg and up, so we'll see. I have generally been satisfied starting with such low doses because my side effects have been nearly non existent.

The American Heart Association released a statement today, ranking dietary patterns which promote cardiovascular health.

The top tier includes the DASH and Mediterranean diets, plus pescatarian and vegetarian. Veganism was second tier, low-fat & low-carb third, with keto and paleo in the bottom tier.

Summary here

I really thought I had posted more recently.

4/22 - down 0.2 pounds. Immensely proud of myself, the week after the colonoscopy.

4/29 - up 4.3 pounds. Pride goeth before a fall.

5/6 - down 3.6 pounds. Most of last week's gain was water. We move on.

Somehow went 8 months without posting on here as my new job has been a whirlwind. I have some decent stuff to report though! My biggest improvement from 8 months ago is probably the drinking. Last year, limiting myself to 6 drinks/week was a lofty goal that I rarely hit, and now I'm doing it consistently. I've continued to do a mix of walking, running, and weightlifting during my hiatus, showing steady improvements in speed & strength. Prioritizing sleep has been another big change -- I still fall short of 8 hours many nights, but at least get 7+ most of the time. Other sleep-related efforts have included cutting out afternoon caffeine and keeping my phone in another room at night. On the diet front, reducing sodium intake is an eternal struggle, but my blood pressure has been alright. I've been trying to manage my sweet tooth with healthier stuff like fiber bars, and most days that's good enough.

Going forward, the goal is to increase my running and lifting in sustainable ways -- whenever I get stuck in a fitness rut, overuse injuries are often the culprit. Currently nursing a pulled back muscle that has kept me from lifting for a couple weeks now, but I've continued to do cardio in the meantime. Glad to see we're still rocking and rolling in here. :headbang:

Haven’t posted here in a bit. Been on the program hard the last month. Dropped 10+ pounds so I can easily fit into my suit for my daughters wedding. Gonna keep going. Same thing that always works. Cut booze. Carbs. No sugar. Protein and salads. Lots of water. Working out. Funny how that works.

Since this is back at the top of the page, I will chime in. I have been finishing part of the basement for the past 5 or 6 weeks. I am at 191 pounds. Lost 3 pounds since 4-3 and down 8.2 pounds for the year. The work in the basement took over life and all the work and lack of time to eat has been good. The hard work is completed and I expect to put a few pounds on in May but I need to stay under 195 for summer.

Operation No voodoo rangers is working. No other changes in diet/booze. Down to 188. Still drinking just no calorie bomb ipas

proper diet is tough atm because we’re remodeling the downstairs. We have no kitchen. I’ve never eaten out this much in my life. :oldunsure:

Got a personal victory by completing five reps with 100 lb dumbbells for my floor press today. My gym doesn’t have a lot of equipment (mostly dumbbells, kettlebells, sandbags, and resistance bands) so I have no idea how that translates to a bench press (we’re obviously not getting a deficit from the floor but we’re also pausing two seconds between reps).

In any case, I’ve pretty much doubled my weight for that movement in less than a year and have gone from being one of the lower lifting men in a class to consistently doing the most or second most in the class I typically go to. Not bad for 51 with virtually no history of strength training (yeah, TRT helps a lot too).

Been a while.

Weighed in at 302 lbs this morning. Down 10 in the past week. Function of a new diuretic medication and consciously eating less. Too much too soon and it isn’t sustainable. Will normalize quickly.

Recent cardiology check up. Doing well cardiac wise. Slight swelling in my legs which prompted the new med after a consult with my nephrologist. No abnormal rhythms.

A1c down to 6.0 from 6.4 last year. See diabetes specialist tomorrow to discuss my numbers. With my kidney function issues decided to talk to a professional instead of managing on my own. 🤦🏼‍♂️

See nephrologist for my kidney function and oncologist in June for follow ups. CT and MRIs in June as well. Fun, fun, fun!

Overall I feel good physically. Need to get back on the exercise routine.

Will be 10 weeks into the program tomorrow when I go in for my 9th injection (I missed my week-5 injection due to travelling for work, which I do think set me back a touch). Overall I'm slightly disappointed but still glad I decided to do it. Down 13 pounds total, but the last 2 weeks I've actually GAINED 1 pound despite stepping up to 1.5mg.

Side effects were minimal until I hit the 1.5mg level after which time the bloating, constipation, and general nausea appeared. All manageable, but still unpleasant. Water intake is CRITICAL. For me the 48 hours following injection it is a mental struggle to make myself drink enough due to persistent fullness and bloating. Drinking a big glass of water w/Metamucil nightly is the key I've learned--if I do that it alleviates the majority of the unpleasantness.

Appetite is suppressed almost all the time, and I do find myself not wanting junk food nearly so much. Pizza remains my kryptonite, but I eat it far more sparingly and find myself able to stop myself from devouring as much when I do indulge. Hardly ever drink, and when I do it's maybe 2 beers because frankly I'm too full for anything more than that.
I'm still confident I can lose more weight like this. My goal is 210, and I'm hoping at tomorrow's weigh-in I'll get into high 220's because I feel I've had a very productive week. More exercise is key...my main calorie burns come from trekking disc golf courses, and in my area the weather has been comically bad of late. My activity level should really improve going forward.

Had my weekly appointment this evening. Great weigh-in, lost 5 lbs for the week. Down to 227 from 242 starting weight beginning of March. Opted to stay at 1.5mg dose of semaglutide since it appears to being doing the job.

The scale says I lost 1.8 pounds this week, steady as she goes. Dodging the storms six days in a row is pretty fortunate this time of year, but I have a treadmill 50 yards away if I need a workaround.

The scale says I gained 1.6 pounds this week. Irritating, but not frustrating. Just a thing that happened on the way to my goal. Let's re-focus this week, because we all know next weekend is a lost cause. LOL.

The scale says I gained another 1.3 pounds this week. Obviously not acceptable, but I can't remember the last time I gained more than a pound two weeks in a row. Need to refocus.

6/3 lost 0.8
6/10 lost 1.1
6/17 lost 2.1

I have a good rhythm going. But that includes a few well-chosen excesses on the weekends, and not only is it Father's Day, it's also my mother's birthday. So I'll be off to the County Line on the Lake shortly.

Been the midst of a remodel for the last 2 months. I’ve never eaten out this much in my life. Plenty of stress drinking. But only 2 six packs of voodoo ranger 😂 purchased by the wife.

And I’ve managed to tread water. :pickle:
4-5 days a week to the gym for my sanity has saved me.

The wife and I Can. Not. Wait. To make our own food.

Update for anyone interested in semaglutide:

Currently down 30 lbs since March 1. On maintenance dosage of 1.5mg per week. Hardly any side effects at this point, though if I do overeat anything greasy my body will certainly let me know. Going to hopefully lose another 10lbs and reevaluate from there. And for the record, this is on a compounded (generic) form of the drug administered through a 'medi-spa'.

These drugs are absolute game-changers in my opinion. I sincerely hope we don't find meaningful longer-term side effects, because as it stands these drugs should be absolute life-savers for the chronically overweight/obese.

i've done yoga 3 weeks in a row!! LAM!!! :lmao: it does feel great. still weigh the same, and i'm healthier and stronger.
Nice. This is the time of the year where I struggle with a little weight gain so I need to follow your footsteps and get some healthy habits back into place right now. I got down to my lightest weight this summer in 10 years but have lost some ground this month. I don’t want to go nuts over the next few weeks and give up all my gains (or losses in this case).

Looks like the thread has been kind of slow, but figured I'd toss some stuff in.

I gradually put weight back on. If much much slower than I lost. Would gain a little, plateau, hit a lack of motivation, gain a little more, etc. Came out of the holidays end of 2023 and went back into dedicated weight loss mode, again in part thanks to my A1C getting up there. I'm down 32 pounds since the holidays. Which after disregarding about 6-8 lbs of water weight, hanging in around 2 lbs a week of loss.

A few observations I had that might help others...

I love soda, drank the zero calorie stuff. The first month and a half I was still drinking it at my normal rate (way too much). And I was having all sorts of cravings all day for pizza, chips, fatty stuff, etc. I cut that soda back to one 12 oz can a day or less, and replaced it all with water. And my cravings immediately vanished the very next day, and after a month and a half they haven't come back. Plus I immediately lost at least 6 pounds of water weight over the next three days. I know people always point out artificial sweeteners do this to you. Just sharing how immediately the strong cravings died soon as I stopped.

I've become a believer in protein shakes. I'm trying to eat 35% of my calories in protein. (1g protein = 4 calories, so if I'm eating 1500 calories then I need 130g of protein). Protein shakes or just eating meat without buns or bread or anything else, is about the only way I find this can be achieved. You'll retain more muscle during weight loss with a high protein diet, and also it helps your metabolism as it digests differently. A great thing is, the protein also cuts my hunger so I'm less likely to want to eat. I usually have a double shake with at least one meal, and then another double shake either during strength training, or with the other meal. With my calories down to a weight loss level, the 4 shakes is enough to keep me around 35% calories from protein. I like the Gold Standard shakes, the double chocolate is good, a few other flavors are good as well. They have a lot of protein compared to the calories. Protein bars, the ones I like, are the same protein but double the calories. I went through the 2lb tub of powder in a few weeks, just picked up the 6lb one. ETA: If you get powder (which is MUCH cheaper) get a shaker bottle to help thoroughly mix them. Use as cold of water as you can, if you don't like it with water can use milk, but more calories then.

And then sticking with the strength training and exercise bike. Doing strength training 5x a week, and an hour on the bike 6x a week, with one rest day in common. I'm not going to start doing 2x a day on the bike like I did before. I feel like it led to too many injuries and pains. I really don't need 2 rides if I'm keeping my calories down anyway. I was losing 1 lb to 2 lbs the first month and a half before I finally started up the exercise again in mid February. So this just helps me retain muscle and be able to take a few extra calories.

Hope everyone is doing well, and if any of that helps someone, great!

Yoga is back in the routine. 75 minutes of hot vinyasa flow every Saturday. I love it
Started doing yoga three years ago when I retired. My wife had been doing it 30+ years. We do a 30 minute routine by " Beach body" at home most days. Now I wake up looking forward to yoga. I weigh about 5 pounds more now than I did in high school. Flexibility is the key as you get older.

Tweaked my knee skiing last month so am taking a break from yoga. But I’ll be back in there soon. Quite proud of the fact that I can put my palms on the floor in a forward bend at 55

wife bought me the Bowflex dumbbell set for Christmas. Since January I’ve started doing 30 day workout programs (Caroline Girvan on YouTube). It’s made a tremendous difference to my physical and mental well being. I still also try to fit in 3 days of body combat a week as well. I’m at the point where I feel like need to workout every day for my own sanity.

That's awesome Fred. It really helps once you get into a routine. There are definitely days I've been dealing with some issues or dark thoughts and a workout helped get my mind onto a better track after. Keep up the great work!

Greetings Everyone

-Decided to try some fast food joints i had not eaten in a very long time, posted in one of the restaurant threads on the cost of eating out.
McDs and most of them do not trigger me for a repeat visit...eat at them once, might not be back for a couple years
However, Culver's is the DEVIL! I had an oreo milkshake/concrete w/hot fudge and ended up on 1-2 week bender that almost made me jump up an entire pant size.
Then I was mean to myself and tried to starve myself into shape before a family wedding this past weekend

-I mention this because it's easy to be preachy and say this works and that works and we should be doing this amount of exercise but if you don't know or understand
what people experience having to try and stay away from the easy out, not wanting to cook for yourself, tired from working a full day and then cook from scratch at home?

So when I get in a rut I always revert to what I learned a few years back when I was active in this thread thru the pandemic.
It is amazing what a daily walk will do for you, even just going in one direction for 10-15 minutes and coming right back home, that's 20-30 minutes round trip
When you start doing that you find it rather easy to turn 30 into 45, etc...

-And I'm a closet eater, many times I sneak the fast food behind my wife's back because she has forbid me from bringing in chips, cookies, sugar, fast food...she joined OA which is like AA and she has meetings and a sponsor and she's doing really well, I'm very proud of what she's done in a short period of time. She is incorporating a lot of fruits and vegetables into our meals and my wife looks much different than she did a few months ago when her work/career was literally destroying her and it was painful trying to show her how much damage was being done long term. Her face including her beautiful eyes, her skin tone, her moods/attitude has completely changed.

Hope everyone is doing well.

*sigh* Back on the weight loss roller coaster… last summer I was down to 218, then let everything go to hell and ballooned back up. 242.4 last Monday. 238.6 on Saturday. Cheated pretty hard for Easter. 241.0 this morning.

This time around, I’m focusing on increasing protein. Still struggling to achieve 1g per lb of target weight, but my intake is definitely higher. Primary goal is sub-200lbs. Secondary goal is to be able to do a true pull up. Idk if I’ve ever been able to do that.

I’ll be weight training minimum 3x week, with some cardio mixed in periodically. Mostly trying to maintain muscle, but lose the fat via diet.

I hear you on Culvers. You know, what started me down the road to gaining again, was my father had a 3rd stroke. I went to see him, I was still limping from fracturing my foot but at least able to move around. He was in a nursing home doing rehab, and the nearest place I could get to eat, was Culver's. Not that I blame them, it was more the loss of motivation that came with being depressed about his situation that got me.

But you're right, that place is the devil for your waistline, but man it's good. They put one in here but thankfully it's a good 20-25 minute drive so I haven't been.

As far as food, what I do may not work for everyone. But I plan my meals out in advance. I get things that I like, that I'm happy eating, that sate my hunger, and fit in my calorie profile. Each of them is pretty quick to make so other than some initial prep I can put my meal together in five minutes usually.

Like I'll get 8 hamburgers and buns and maybe I toss in something different for one or two meals along the way, but I'll have 8 lunch/dinner of hamburgers. Then I'll get roast beef, cheddar on brioche rolls (different brands have way diff calories), and with Arby's sauce I buy at the grocery store. I'll get fajita meat, cook it all at once, split it 8 ways and freeze half, and have burritos using soft taco shells so they are small. Instant rice (half a container per burrito), sour cream and mozzarella. Turkey and swiss sandwiches. I just find a lot of stuff that sates me and then I rotate through it so I don't get sick of any one thing. Plus I'll throw in a few things to change it up in the middle of a stretch (KFC just a single Original chicken breast, is only 390 calories, and 39g of protein... Firehouse Steamer sub, medium, is 720 calories, 40g of protein).

Most of those are around 500 calories, the highest are in the 700+ range. I add fruit and other healthy things around them then. But planning out what I'm going to eat in advance is a big help in actually losing weight. I'm still going to have to do more about maintaining then when I get down to my target.

One thing I’m using a lot of that helps the protein goals without the calories is Greek yogurt. Super versatile as far as making sauces and dressings. Made a very tasty cucumber/tomato salad with a yogurt dressing, a nice tatziki, and a spicy dipping sauce for sweet potatoes, which I also ended up using on a 93/7 burger. It’s pretty amazing.

Edit- back down to 239 this morning. Peed off the Easter carbs.

Yes good call. I've not been having any but I was eating it for breakfast awhile back (doing oatmeal now). The brand I got (and added berries to) was about 48% calories from protein not counting the berries.

I found that just a little bit of honey eliminates the tang from the yogurt, and makes it a lot more palatable for me. Had that with a bunch of berries thrown in one day last week.
