Otis fad diet thread — yoga, fasting, and kevzilla walking on🚶‍♂️ (3 Viewers)

Yesterday walked into my house into a huge surprise party my wife threw me for my 40th. GB that woman. A great time all around, though I certainly ate and drank my way into oblivion. I even ate some potato pancakes
I am 5 days older than you.  40 year olds coming together over potatoes and topless male selfies is a beautiful thing.

Happy birthday, you young whippersnappers.

I made a boiled potato cake with Sriracha frosting. And there's one of those photo booth things set up in the :confetti: room, for shirtless selfies. The password is "do you even lift, bro?"

What was for breakfast this morning?

By the way, discovered an amazing meal last night. Took the pre boiled potatoes out of the fridge and cut them into wedges. The briefest spray or cooking spray, some salt, and bake until crispy. Then instead of ketchup, which is kind of nasty and has a lot of garbage in it, I spread tomato sauce (Rao's pizza sauce) over the top, sprinkle on a touch of garlic powder. Incredible. Was like having a full-on pasta dish.
Spraying both sides? Parchment paper or anything needed? This is the type of thing that could help get my wife on board, I think I'm going to do another week here to recover from a couple consecutive weeks in Muskoka and Vegas.

Both sides and I spray a foil lined sheet.

If you don't want to boil them first I slice them.into wedges then microwave in a big bowl until barely fork tender then bake

Eta- I flip after about 10 mins then go 10 more

Took me three years but finally hit 170 today. Last 5 pounds have been pretty dirty.  Going on a work trip this week then will get back and maybe start this breakfast lunch 5 days a week following Monday and see where that puts me.  31 days till I'm on a beach.

That's was bulking up not cutting, right?  Congrats

I put them right on a baking sheet.  Brief spritz of cooking spray on the sheet, potatoes on, and another brief shot over the top of the potatoes to make the salt and spices stick and give them a little extra crisp.

Crazy thing about this is how these magic potatoes keep working long after you each them.  I was celebrating last week getting down to 217, and then had a huge surprise birthday party on Saturday, Father's Day cookout on Sunday, and business travel Monday and Tuesday during which I basically ate whatever (maybe a few healthier choices than in the past).  219.4 this morning.

This works.  Onward to 210...

Tried these Monday, very good. Will likely do again tonight. Tried to modify an "accordion potato" recipe to fat free last night, didn't work so well.

Once again, my wife was out before the end of day 1.

For the few of us that like ketchup and mustard on our dogs, my recent go to has been a golden potato nuked for 4 minutes with that on it.   Pretty tasty.   I enjoy the wedges in the oven, but they take too long to make.   This is so much easier.   Really has become my go to snack/meal when i'm not really craving something else.

Just baked up an amazing potato. A little olive oil on the skin, rolled in salt, baked at 400 for an hour, then broiled for about 10. Skin was super crunchy and inside was perfectly soft.

Added about a half a stick of butter and down the hatch.

Wish I could contribute here but my lack of kids has left me a relatively stress free life that has granted my 18 year old me and my 36 year old me the same girlish figure.

Checking in to this thread.  I read a little when it first started, but didn't give it much thought as I was doing Weight Watchers again, and that worked for me in the past.  A couple of issues crept up; first, I don't have my early 30s metabolism any more, and second, the slower weight loss didn't help me stay focused.  I just got back from another lunch where I gorged myself and now feel sick.  I need something like this that limits my choices.

A couple of questions (if you can indulge me without telling me to go read the whole 35 page thread):

First - I assume anything outside of the potato you consume is going to slow down the process (ie butter, condiments, cooking them in fat, etc).  Any other strict guidelines?  My main concern is beverages.  I don't drink coffee, but need caffeine intake.  I'd probably drink diet pop, but may try switching to tea and honey.

For the people who have had success, did you start out strict potato only, and slowly add things?  I'm thinking if I just went plain potatoes to start (a week or two), then slowly added different seasons, and eventually condiments, that might help me stick with it longer.

I have my 25 year reunion in a couple of months.  Right now I'm 199, which is as big as I've ever been.  I would like to not be one of those people who my classmates look at and say "wow, what happened to him?"  I'd like to approach the normal range of decline.  How many pounds a week are people dropping?

tldr; tell me why and how I should do this.

I have done this two separate weeks now over the past month and each time lost some weight. Like Otis, I haven't stuck to it all on weekends, just been a bit healthier, but have still had beer and BBQ and overall I'm down about 8 lbs over 4 weeks, with a trip to Vegas in the middle of it, so I do believe in it. You may see a rapid drop at first before it levels off. By the 4th day of only potatoes I get a boner at the sight of a hamburger on TV, the "no cravings for other food" part of it, doesn't happen for me, at least not in a few days. My drop is from 218 to 210, so I'm bigger than you but not by a ton.

I have drank diet drinks throughout and they haven't affected my results. I have done strictly potatoes at first and what I have added in the time since has also been free of added fat or sugar (mostly in the form of salsa, tomato, mushroom, etc.. as toppings, but no oil/butter/cheese, like I would have typically added). A lot of days I've skipped breakfast, simply because I don't seem to be hungry in the morning, so with my last meal at 6 PM and then my lunch the next day around noon, it's about 18 hours of intermittent fasting. I've kept exercising like I normally do, which is 45 or so minutes at a time 4-5 times a week (running or squash).

It is all variable.  If you're serious about it, I highly recommend you spend the 10 bucks or whatever it costs to buy the book that set me onto this (and which was recommended by Maurile and others): The Potato Hack.  It's an easy read and helps you understand what's happening and keeps you making smart decisions.

I would do it rigorously the first week.  Stick to it seriously, just potatoes and water and black coffee or tea.  You can relax it as you move forward and learn to better understand what is working and what doesn't.

I've been going about 5 weeks now -- not religiously, and not really depriving myself -- and I'm down almost 15lbs.  And that's with a bunch of off day benders, letting loose on weekends, and even starting to loosen the reins a bit now (e.g., I drink some Diet Snapples throughout the day; I nearly every night now have crisped potato wedges under pizza sauce (amazing), I'm drinking a cheat beer right now on a Thursday night, and on weekends I basically do whatever TF I want).

Read the book.  Take it seriously for 1-2 weeks and see what happens.  Then start to loosen things up reasonably.  I think 2-3lbs per week is reasonable and easy to do, really without having to give up much of anything.

Thanks.  I am going to start this today.  However, I unfortunately know that I can't go just potatoes, water, coffee and tea.  I can't stand black coffee (I have tried it many times as a replacement for pop, I just can't do it), so I will be having diet pop.  I will limit it to two a day (one in the morning, one late afternoon/evening).  Otherwise it will be water (which isn't a problem as I drink a lot already).

First week will be potatoes, salt and pepper only.  I'll see where I am next Friday.

Height 6' 1"

Starting weight: 196

Long term goal weight: 170

Short term goal 184 by August 6th (two pounds a week until my reunion)

OK, so I really only did this for a day and a half to start.  Did it 100% Friday, woke up Saturday morning 2 lbs down.  I had potatoes breakfast and lunch, but had plants for a pasta feed at a bar Saturday night, so I had pasta and drinks.  Ate normal food, but tried to be reasonable Sunday.  Woke up this morning at 194.5.

Friday and Saturday weren't good for my stomach though.  I'll spare the details.  Anyone have issues at the start with that, but have it get better?

Where we at Oats?
Stuck in neutral. This weekend was a travesty of fast food and booze.  This morning at 221.3. Haven't eaten yet today, will have spud and sauce tonight and maybe a Coors Light and be back below 220 tomorrow.

But yeah I need to follow through a weekend or two here to push to 210. Just really enjoying the good food and booze on weekends....

Here's the thing -- every week that passes with me gorging myself on there weekend and still ending up hovering around 220 is a success.  I'm struggling to feel bad about that.  But I would like to get down to 210 soon and then see if I can continue the same lifestyle at that weight.

I'm in the same boat, brother. Can't find the gumption to push through another long stretch and stuck at 227. I keep telling myself I'm just resetting my leptin level. Summertime beers are doing me in.

Potatoes are high in fiber and resistant starch. If you didn't already have a high-fiber diet before, it's not unusual to have some cramps and lots of farting for a few days while adjusting.

It gets harder and harder to stay motivated once you get to that weight you certainly don't need to lose but would like to lose so that for instance you'll have some abs.  Need to lose 5 more myself to get to the goal of 200 but it's just vanity at this point.  So I polished off a quart of beef and broccoli and a family size bag of bbq chips last night instead.

Yeah.  Tonight I had two beers and some dark chocolate.  Heavenly.

I'd say you hit the nail on the head here.  It has gotten a little better over the last day or two, but still not great.  I'm down to 191 (five pounds since Friday), so I'd like to keep going.

I'm attempting a "no beer July" (well at least from the 5th to the 29th - leave for vacation on the 30th), so this will work well with an attempt to full work in spud during the week.

Welcome aboard TF.  Git er done.

218.3 this morning. And that's basically with trying to sabotage. Had two beers each of the past two nights, along with some chicken cutlet, and a piece of chocolate, cookie, and/or some kind of snack.  And of course eating and drinking whatever the hell I want on weekends.

Basically I've now satisfied myself that I can live on this "diet" full time and basically deprive myself of nothing.

The test will be, if I deprive myself a bit to get to say 205, and then pick back up with my current habits (weekends off, and some minor cheats during the week), will I stay at 205 or float back up to 217.We'll see

In any event I still would like to drop 5-10 more lbs, all while building a little muscle through body weight exercise.  Just need to get my pull-up bar installed somewhere and then follow the regimen. Could be superman in 6 months IMO.

Ding Ding 229lbs!

14 lbs in 6 weeks part timing it... too easy.

Getting back into bball 4 days a week, not sure potato days can sustain me through 90-120 minutes of that.  We shall see.

Honestly everyone on this board should be eating potatoes 3-4 days a week.  I'm convinced. This is the best thing ever.

Reading of your success while cheating is not helping me.  I've convinced myself that I have to stick to this 100% during the week, and that it works for me because it takes the discretion out of my diet.  I know I just can't deal with "little" cheats here and there because a little cheat for me (say, a fun size candy bar to satisfy my sweet tooth) turns into a king size bar and a can of pop.  Beer and pizza don't tempt me because I know I'll have those on the weekend in moderation.  It's the little stuff during the week that would kill me.

As far as my results, I weighed in at 190 this morning (day 1 was last Thursday at 196).  I haven't had to deal with much temptation other than Tuesday.  I had to volunteer at my kids baseball game, and I ran the grill for the concession stand.  Smelling the burgers and brats was killing me.  I know one would turn into one of each, so I held fast.

Taking the day from work tomorrow, so starting the holiday weekend right.  Tonight was beer, a few glasses of whine, chicken nuggets, pizza, M&Ms, chocolate, pizza, chips and salsa, a cookie.  Probably more I"m not thinking of.

Loldiet

I don't think I've ever had that exact combination before, but it sounds delicious.

Well, what a weekend. If you can name it, I ate too much of it.  And drank a ton. That said, it was a holiday weekend and my 40th, so I don't feel bad about it.  Over a four day weekend looks like I managed to tack on 6 or 7 lbs.

up to 224.2 this morning

22.2%

I am certain it's not real weight, and 4lbs of that will vanish in a day. But in probably at a legitimate 219. Push back to 217 by end of the week. And then onwards we march.

No more holiday weekends or celebrations coming up, no immediate business travel.  Now is the time to make a push to 210.  I'd like to be there in about 3 weeks.

Back to Full Spud

Dude at my HEB deli is awesome.  He makes the potato salad.  I asked him if he could just throw boiled potatoes into a few tubs for me... genius.  I'm now paying a 1000% markup for my potatoes, but I don't have to work beyond a microwave or oven for my boiled or baked tots.  Worth it.

Your potato salad deli guy may not have the same kind of pull mine does. YMMV.

Genius. I need to find some local convenient suppliers.

damn, no need to get all racist

220 on the nose today.   About what I expected.  I think I haven't broken below 217 yet, time to move the chains this week.

Had my usual delicious dinner last night.  Baked potato wedges, covers in Rao's sauce, sprinkle on some crushed Italian pepper and onion, a light dusting of garlic powder, and even the lightest sprinkle of Parmesan cheese.  Heavenly.

Also feeling like a million bucks.  Starting to slowly work my way back into push-ups, pull-ups, squats, lunges.  If I can keep religion during the week in the coming weeks, and employ some retraint over the next few weekends (maybe one cheat day, not 4), my goal of 210 in 3 weeks is feeling within reach.

:flex:
