One of my buddies told me this at work:

Your first house you try to to everything yourself. Your second house, you realize how stupid that was and just pay someone to do it.

Painting is about the easiest DIY project. Suggest you and your pals to that and spend the $4000 elsewhere.
:goodposting:

I do a Beer a wall.. Start with the ceiling though and you bust out a room / coat per night. A lot more on the weekend and with friends.

The one thing I'm confident in is painting, all that takes is patience...... and beer.

projects completed thus far

pack otis's stuff - farmed out

move otis's stuff - farmed out

basic painting - to be farmed out

basic mounting of TV stand - farmed out

i'd say he's ready for some DIY lumberjacking

Correct me if I am wrong here, but those trees appear to be in your front lawn on a downward slope to the street? If that is correct, I stand by my original question, "Serious question, how do you farm out a plasma mount but think you are going to cut down trees and not bring the entire neighborhood to its knees?"
:goodposting:
You guys must be shticking here. These things aren't very big at all, and they are all leaning downhill towards the driveway. Obviously we won't leave a car parked underneath them, but with a couple guys this should be cake. Not sure what all the fuss is about. BUT OTIS YOU'RE FROM THE CITY AND DON'T KNOW HOW DANGEROUS IT IS TO CUT STUFF.Bring it on, snitches.

Very good suggestion...
Yeah I suppose if I had the time and patience to patch and paint the whole thing -- and even then, it won't look nearly as good as a professional doing it. BRING IN THE PAINTER

that looks like pachysandra to me  pachysandra = shady ground cover

read up
What BF says... It take YEARS to get pachysandra to cover like that. It saves you a whole lot of work and grows where grass struggles. I can't make out clearly just what borders the drive there, but it looks like it might be hostas. Great border plant. Yours just need to be thinned out a bit.
So the weeds wouldn't bother you? I'd love a freshly cut lush lawn there. The weeds drive me bananas. But I suppose they are the least of my worries right now...

What kind of sun do you get in the area of that picture? You might not be able to get to "lush" simply because of the shade. I think that looks pretty nice actually....just needs a little TLC.

O- they aren't weeds, dammit. :wall: :lmao: When you get your landscaping fella in he will explain it to you. Pick you lawn areas carefully and work them. It pays to minimize lawn, especially where it can become a battle you can't win.My yard has HUGE expanses of English ivy. I am thankful for them every day...and every time my wife broaches the topic of removing large chunks- for whatever reason- I do anything I can to show her how wrong it would be.

 hey, if he wants to tear it out and TRY to plant grass that'll end up looking sparse and like #### and wash out when it rains and then try to mow and weed whack it every other weekend during the summers, more power to him I say...

to me, groundcover is the way to easily limit the amount of lawncare you HAVE to do on weekends....me, I like :banned: and enjoying my time, not mowing my lawn. But to each their own.

This really doesn't look that bad but could probably use some thining out/cleaning. You should talk to a gardener before you ripe this up as I would think the reason this is all here is that grass won't grow. Nothing could be worse then riping it all out and just having dirt/mud as a front yard. That will look nice.

Agreed. You could plant some shrubs/small Japanese maples etc. in amongst the pachy to give it a bit more intentional look.

Or get big stones/boulders and intersperse them. Or small planting beds built out of the slope with retaining block.

I agree that the big green slope is a bit boring. Add some dimension to it. Don't rip out the pachy. Work with it.

I have no problem :banned: and :drive: my lawn, it's just the fighting to grow a lawn where it doesn't want to grow that is teh suck.(I don't really have a ride on mower, but I love that guy...)

Lots of helpful info here. I see what you guys are saying. We'll have to get into the area this weekend and clean it out and prune and pull out dead stuff. We'll reevaluate once all that is done. Maybe keeping the stupid weeds won't kill me.

Or the fact that you are not competent enough to mount plasma, but you think it will be no trouble at all to fell multiple trees that point towards the street. You are right though, it has to be the fact that you are a city guy. Can we get video of you running a chainsaw? I would recommend the largest one you can handle with two hands. You show those trees who is boss.

To me, looks like from the picture (in the background) there may be some overhead lines there you may want to take special note of before going paul bunyan. video of this is a definite must

Just remember the bigger the chainsaw the better the job. And please post video of you taking out power to the neighborhood and blocking traffic on the street.

I am nearly certain the neighbors will come by and thank me for cleaning up this joint, including cutting down a few of these ridiculous, haphazardly-planted-and-maintained trees.
I am nearly certain you don't understand the suburban mindset. My mother has been called to Village Hall because of dogs barking at 2 in the afternoon - although whenever the code enforcement guy drives by, he hears nothing.I've seen #### escalate for far less than removal of trees, and on numerous occasions have seen tree removal become a major issue regarding lack of permits, safety and environmental "save the trees" issues. You have sir, been warned.

I have gotten Flack for removing Trees.... One neighbor was real emotional and near tears when he said "Why did you move to ####### "Woods" if you don't like trees"......THE TREES WERE DEAD!!!!!!!!

Yep. Especially high-end, uppity suburban women. Careful.Buying your first home, and the property surrounding it, often leads one to despise big gov't. They have way more say over what you do than you originally thought. Also, Home Depot lies. "You can do it. We can help." This is almost never fully true. I especially love the commercial with a 60-year-old woman installing glass tile herself in her shower surround. 95% chance things like this are not done right by the average DIYer.

Pachysandra and hosta are the lazy man's best friends in yard landscaping. They are tough as hell and flourish in the dry shade that kills off most other plantings (including grass). And you don't have to do anything to them after planting.ETA: this is a great thread, props to Otis for sharing, taking the abuse and unwanted advice, and being a good sport about it all.

Have you looked at the trees in the picture he is planning on removing? He doesn't even need a chainsaw for that job. :wall:
Exactly. I think this could be done fairly easily with a hacksaw or axes. It's not so much taking them down that I think requires the chainsaw, it's cutting them into pieces once they are down so they can be bundled and picked up

If you're going to chop down the trees, by all means rent/buy a chainsaw. Don't half ### it with an axe. Will save you boatloads of time.

:lmao:  For real, if you can't cut those trees down yourself...it's a sign to not do any more DIY projects. Those suckers should be easy to remove. Not very big. Should fall down the slope.

Bow saw could easily take them down. I already said a chainsaw would make the job of cutting them up much easier.
Will a bow saw magically allow him to miss the power lines in the background? Otis has never fell a tree and this a terrible idea for him to pop his felling cherry. Too many things that can go wrong, with the power lines, the trees leaning toward the street and being in his front yard. he should start on something small in his backyard, but hey what the hell do I know?

What BF says... It take YEARS to get pachysandra to cover like that. It saves you a whole lot of work and grows where grass struggles. I can't make out clearly just what borders the drive there, but it looks like it might be hostas. Great border plant. Yours just need to be thinned out a bit.

save the professional looking turf dreams for your next house, farther out in the burbs, with a flat lot and lots of sun.

Growing grass on a hill in the shade sucks balls. Trust me.
