Did some gardening today. There is a huge planter and about a dozen pots in the yard that previously had nothing but dirt in them. Got up and hit the nursery, bought a whole crapload of flowers that I know nothing about, along with some soil. Realized I don't have any gardening tools so I used one of my wife's big pot spoons that she uses to make pasta as my digging item. Not sure if there is a rule to all this other than bury the roots and then water a ton, but that's pretty much what I did. Now the yard is looking a little more lively.
The Suburbs: Piece o Cake
I also spent the morning at Home Depot. My strategy now is just to walk around and see what things are, and then ask myself if I have that problem or my house would otherwise be better off if I bought it. THis probably leads to a lot of wasted money and makes me a sucker for marketing, but so be it. I'm improving my home, right?? The spoils of my trip today:Miracle Gro Evergreen & Miracle Gro Tree & Shrub fertilizer sticks - need those trees to grow for more privacy. These things seem cool, whether they do anything is another story.
Scotts Patchmaster Grass Repair - I ####ed up when I put a stone there overnight. Wifey was not happy.
Spectracide Weed & Crabgrass spray - doesn't seem to hurt the grass, did it a few weeks ago and took care of a lot of the clovers etc, but there's still some. Did another spray.
Solar path lights
4 new hanging outdoor lanterns plus one for the post in front. The ones we have now are fugly.
A thermacell because you guys recommend it... and I hate bugs.
Also, last week I bought a garden rake, pruning shears, hedge shears, and a shovel. I don't why I really need any of these - what the hell am I digging for? - but seemed like something I should have right?
Still don't have a lawnmower or edger... pay someone $30 a week to do it (about 1/3-1/2 acre, so not a ton, but still takes time).
BTW - if you want landscaping lights, stay away from the solar ones unless you get a LOT of light on the front. We bought the "better" ones which were "6x brighter" (at $25 a pop) and they were barely visible... going to get the wired kit which is like $100 for 4-5 lights plus the transformer.
