Out of the Park baseball sim league starting (1 Viewer)

Spock question: How easily could I "train" either Tracy or Hillenbrand to play 2B? OF?
Training is best done during the season in the minors. Just put them over there and after a couple months (sometimes a couple seasons) the scout will give them a rating for that position. Or the scout will come back and tell you that he's not learning the position and continuing to play him there will have negative effects on the other part of his game. If he's a good fielding 3B, he'll probably make an OK 2B. Same for OF. But again you never know if they can successfully learn it.

You may have luck training them to play a new position during spring training. But there's a high chance of failure, and whether or not they successfully learn it you'll notice other parts of their game take a hit since they couldn't focus on those aspects during spring training. It's easy to train OF's and catchers to play 1B during spring training. But don't expect someone to learn a skill position during spring training. Let them learn that for a while in the minors.

Glaus will be fine. His HR and walks ratings are superb.... and that's all that really matters to me.
I get it. I think your pitching acquisitions are huge but losing Tex and Blalock is going to hurt. Glaus will help some I guess.Soriano wasn't much of a loss.

Soriano wasn't much of a loss.
No kidding. He is a fraud. I felt great dumping Chan Ho Park on that guy with him... the only thing that pissed me off was that he agreed to Bedard, Roberts, Cust and then backed out of it. I had to settle for Riley, Roberts, and Cust... but clearing Park off the slate was huge.

so, anyone interested in Rodriquez??? 4.5 star catcher...
For what?
not sure...I definately want to get younger, and Rodriquez is not young, and his $10 million price tag is kinda steep (although he is good enough that I'm ok with keeping it)... I'm just not sure I can turn the team around fast enough for him to do that much good for me...

what would you give me? (what team are you? lol)
Do you need any OF or 1B help?

I pretty much need help everywhere except 3B lolIt would, however, be nice to get a decent C in return for him, too... doesn't have to be great, but a couple stars or a decent prospect would be kinda nice...

Update: Byung-Hyun Kim added to the fold. You know, the BH Kim that used to be good in real life, but is still good in sim life because OOTP doesn't know then what we know now.

George McQuaid (SP prospect) was sent to Frost.

That guy likes trading.
I took over the Rangers after the trading deadline... so I was just waiting for the offseason. I've been anticipating the makeover for weeks. That's why it is hilarious that they almost kicked me out for inactivity before the offseason.

What's up with the downloading I've seen mentioned? I have a feeling I won't be able to get to these sites at work, which would diminish my interest quite a bit. Seems like alot of work and tweaking that I don't have time to do at home right now.Kraft, I see your post about the Sox.
I do it at work and it didn't require admin rights. You should try downloading OOTP 5 and see if it runs on your machine.
Where's that at?
http://ootpdevfiles.com/ootp/ootp5freesetup.exe
No dice. Sorry fellas, this seems fun.

Someone take Piazza. Please.
What do you want?
Mostly I need pitching but I'm also looking for a a decent offensive option at 2B and a 1B prospect. Not all for Piazza. Those are just my needs.
Take a look at Matt Riley and Ricardo Rodriguez. One of those guys is expendable for me. Catcher is a need. Edit to add: I also have Adrian Gonzalez as a 1B prospect. Not necessarily wild about moving him in a deal for Piazza, but he is avaliable.

I have this game on my desk top at home. I have been extracting the league file into OOTP since about 5pm & it's only about half done. Any advice on how I could get this to be faster? I have cable moden & my computer is not that old.

Here's what I do.

Download the league file into goldenspikes.

extract that into programfiles, OOTP on my C drive.

Am I doing something odd?

All you need to do is this:Download league file to desktop

Unzip into Program Files/Out of the Park Baseball/OOTP 5

Mine takes a couple of minutes to download and extract.

How about: Carl Everett - OF (.304 24 101, 33 yr old, switch hitter, $3.5 million through 2005) &

Brian Schneider - C (28 yr old, 2.5 star, Left Handed, B Range, A Arm, $1.195 million - arbitration for 2 more years)

for Pudge Rodriquez - C ($30 million over next 3 years)

It'll save you about $23 million, Schneider's defense is just as good as Pudge's, being a lefty he could be platooned with a cheap RH catcher, and Everett's offense is just as good as Pudge's.

I want to get young guys like Rivera, Wilkerson, and Pascucci to start in the OF, and utilize Sledge and Chavez as reserves. As such Everett is expendable despite being my best hitter in '04. And I can easily afford Pudge's contract.

I need more than that from you, I'm giving up a 4.5 star player, and I'm getting a throwaway 2 star OF and a 2.5 star C back?? I have OF as good as Everett, I need an upgrade somewhere...that being said, how about we do this:

Pudge Rodriquez, Carlos Guillen, & Bobby Higgenson, & Dmitri Young

for

Brian Schneider, Orlando Cabrera, & (Wilkerson, Rivera, or Vaspucci), Carl Everett & Dustin McGowen

what do you think???

Hey Larry, any interest in Wade Miller (4 star)? Solid stats from last year...

13-10, 3.74 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 214.1 IP, 181 K's.

I'd be interested in Pudge, and could probably absorb the salary hit.

just sent you a PM about Miller at the other site... lolmake an offer, Pudge could possibly be included in a trade involving Miller, I could probably even get you that leftie OF pop you were looking for...

I think Larry is overstating the importance of the gold stars just a bit.
Agreed.
Guys, I just taught him the difference in gold stars and blue stars a few weeks ago. He was trying to tell me that a guy had more blue stars than gold stars, as though they were interchangable. He's learning. ;)

I wouldn't mind finding out exactly what this means. I've been treating it as blue stars = potential, but may not pan out and gold = their current rankings? Not really sure, so any help would be groovy.

Blue stars are potential but you can't read too much into that. Once a player turns 26 his stars go to gold and it isn't necessarily the same number as the number of blue stars he had. They aren't completely accurate. You need to look at those, the ratings, and the players' stats.

not really that hilarious. the commish had to send an APB out on you to get some kind of life from the front office of the rangers.

What do you want from me? To anxiously await the 4th place finish of a team that I had no control over? :hophead:

eh - a lot of guys didn't have much control over the teams they took over but they were active, posting in the league since they assumed control of their team.i don't really care one way or the other; i just want active GM's in the league, much like most of the people in SLOB do.

I don't think I'm going to land a FA. Wanted Polanco, but I'm guessing he's going to command too big of a salary.
i remember looking at his player page and seeing 125 RBI last season.

Anyone doing pro or college hoops?
I'm in SLOX - one of the pro hoops leagues.

So you're saying I'm not active? PS- I had 8 posts between the acquisiton of a team I couldn't control and the off-season. What more did you want? Commentary on teams that I didn't care about?

i really don't care what you post about, but to clarify, i'm saying you weren't active. there's lots to contribute besides the welfare of your own team. you are active now though - hopefully you'll remain so.

With all due respect, I think I understand what it takes to be active in an OOTP league. I ran two of them, and have played dozens of them since the days of OOTP2. It is silly to bring on a GM, give him a team he can't access or change, and then try to get rid of him prior to the offseason activities. You were the only person that even tried to contact me. The commish didn't even PM me before he was going to cut bait. Real classy move there.

that's great that you understand, and that you ran two leagues, however, that's irrelevant. the point is, you weren't active in the only league that we're talking about. you could have been an active spectator and been openly musing about planned offseason activities - SOMEthing to contribute to the league...but you didn't. that's not even up for debate, and this song and dance is kind of tired, so i'm not sure why we're talking about it.now you're active and that's great and that's the point. i look forward to seeing you winning the world series with the rangers in the future and staying as active on the message board as you are now - that can only help the league.

if you'd like to leave the league over complaints from the commish, the door is easy to find. not sure what the whining is for about the commissioner, but he saw you weren't active at all, much like everyone else. i fully support him in seeking some answers why and if he got someone more constructive to the league, then bringing them in. the commish doesn't have to be classy - it's his league; thankfully he is though, and i think all of the guys in this thread who are in the league would agree. it's too bad that you weren't even involved or active in the league last season or else you'd have easily seen that.

This discussion is really pretty silly. We're talking about a period of a few weeks where nothing was going on.
:goodposting: BTW, I'm in the process of extracting the new file now. I'll be with you RE: Piazza in a few mins.

Well, the bottom line is that now is a good time to be active and get your team going in the right direction, and thankfully most teams are at least efforting to do so. I can't wait to see how this draft class shakes down, and how many of the guys are brought straight from the draft into the majors.

Anyone look at the draft class? I love some of these nicknames the players have:

Clifton "The Bandit" Vanderburg

Vernon "Thunder" Kort

Francis "Crystal" Rasberry

George "The Worm" Acres

I was active in that time period. I had worked deals out with Detroit and Baltimore behind the scenes. Just because I'm not posting "Teixeira hit another HR today!!!!!!! Only 13 games out!" in the season discussion thread doesn't mean I'm not involved. Thanks for making grand assumptions though.I never said I had a problem with the commish, I actually think he does a great job. I said it was silly to get rid of a GM without at least PMing him to see what is up. That is all I said. I'll stand by that as well. Again, glad you are making grand assumptions though.

Not that I owe you an explanation, but I had other things going on in my life during the few weeks between July 31 and the offseason. Sorry I didn't dedicate enough time to commenting on the team that I couldn't control. Next time I'll check with you to make sure it is okay to not visit the site for a couple of days. Also, I'll continue to check with you to make sure I am active enough for your liking. I wouldn't want to be up for "firing" again.
