Outdoor TV and speakers at the pool... anyone done it? (1 Viewer)

I haven't done it yet but plan on it. I've already run speakers (which I got from Monoprice).

The trouble is the tv. You can't just throw any tv outside, even if its protected from the elements. TV's aren't meant to stand up to temperature fluctuates and certainly not humidity. You need to get a tv that is specifically meant to be used outdoors. They are expensive...

And get a mount that has a locking mechanism so somebody can't walk away with it very easily. If you have a home security system, it would be good to put a camera pointed at it.
Oh come on.

I've put photos of my setup before. I got a low end sams club TV for 150 bucks that's mostly covered and has no security camera on it. It's outside without any enclosure and has been there for 2 years with no issue.

The enclosures and security will cost you more than the cost of just replacing the TV if it gets stolen or damaged.
I live in Los Angeles. If its not locked down, its gone. Guaranteed. And I didn't recommend installing a system around it. I said if he already has one, point a camera at it.
How do people get in your backyard? What are the fence codes? How do they know it's there?
Gardeners. Cleaning lady. Soon the pool cleaner. I have contractors all over the place right now due to renovation.

This is simply not true.

My pop has had a cheap LCD Flatscreen outside on a patio for 3+ years now... no problems. Buy a decent 42" LCD/LED and as long as it's not going to get rained on, it will be fine. He would fire it up when it was 40 degrees up and watch TV out there while smoking a cigar under an outdoor heater. Took a minute for the TV to warm up but it worked fine.

Think about it....

Cheap 42" LCD TV = $400

Fancy Outdoor LCD TV = $4000

YOu can consider the cheaper TVs to be disposable and still come out ahead.... though chances are any decent one will last just fine as long as it's not getting wet. SEriously.

If you're that sure a tv mounted on your patio in your backyard is going to be stolen you should not be hanging out outside.
That would shatter my dream of floating in my pool and watching football on Sundays. I'll take my chances with the lock and cameras. And buying a cheaper tv makes it even more palatable.

The house is in a very low crime area and the TV will be inside a locked screen room. Of course, any putz with a box cutter could get on to the porch, but we do have ADT and a retired cop/USMC sniper across the street who sits on his front porch smoking 13 hours a day. How much longer he'll be around if he keeps that up, I don't know but the point is that theft is not much of a concern. It's a pretty high rent area that isn't anywhere near a sketchy neighborhood, which is pretty rare in FL.

I went simple, used a Rocketfish to hook up wireless speakers for music, mounted and tv and bought a Bose soundbar for TV sound and I have a fan always blowing on the tv. The only time I bring it in is when I know it will be freezing, maybe 3 or 4 times a year. I've had the 42 inch Vizio out there for 4 years now and still no issues.
Question for you (or anyone else who may know) : I think I'm going to go with a setup much as described here. My question is : is it possible to "cast" audio wirelessly from the TV to the Rocketfish speakers rather than connecting a separate sound bar for TV audio? Would I need some sort of dongle (uh huh huh huh) to plug into the audio out on the television to connect it to the wireless speakers?
