Owen Daniels - Anyone starting him this week? (1 Viewer)

Thinking about rolling him out this week over Carlson.

Anyone heard anything more recent than this?

Owen Daniels-TE- Texans Aug. 30 - 4:55 pm et

Owen Daniels has been activated from the Texans' camp/PUP list.

As expected, he's on the practice field Monday. Daniels, however, is not expected to be an every-down tight end to open the year. Coach Gary Kubiak anticipates using him for only 15-20 snaps in the regular season opener.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports...nt/7190666.html
Kubiak likes to keep four tight ends. Quarterback Matt Schaub likes to throw to his tight ends, especially Daniels, who is supposed to play 15 to 20 snaps against the Colts. It will be Daniels' first time on the field since he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in the eighth game at Buffalo last season.

"He's worked very hard, and he looks good," Kubiak said.

Before he was injured, Daniels was on a pace for 80 catches for 1,138 yards and 10 touchdowns.

"My knee feels good," Daniels has been telling the media since he was cleared to return to practice two weeks ago. "Every day, I'm building a little more confidence to get ready for Week One.

The bottom line is that Kubiak and Pariani have a lot of players to utilize at a position they value. The key, of course, is getting Daniels back.

"We know what type of player he is," Kubiak said. "We didn't want to risk anything (during rehabilitation). The idea has been to get him healthy and get him ready to go (for Indianapolis)."

In wait and see mode with him until we see some real action ... Going with Zach Miller (Oak flavor) for now

Going with Celek instead, but I can't wait to get him into my lineup when he is on the field more.

Likely rolling with Heath Miller over him.

Just want to see what he has and don't like the limit of 15-20 snaps.

How many of those snaps do you think he will actually see targets?

But is 15-20 snaps better than most alternatives.
The league I own him in, I got him real late and waited on all TE's in general. I have to decide between Gresham and Daniels and am trying to go with the one who is going to be on the field more. Whats the PT look like for Gresham this week up against NE - Starting TE and target #3? That would be worth more than "15-20 plays"(which could be only 2 series) in my opinion. If you believe the 15-20 plays shtick, I would say he is a bench/hold until at least week 2. Doesn't seem like a lot.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak said TE Owen Daniels could get 20-25 snaps on Sunday. 1/4 or 1/3 of the plays, maybe more depending on how he feels

If you waited and everyone else drafted backups...it could be.I waited a bit after missing on Finley, Gates, Celek, Davis, Clark and Witten. Was targeting Shiancoe when he went off the board. I knew several guys were not big on Daniels so I took him a bit later. Actually had Zach Miller ready to go later and he was snatched up leaving me with Heath Miller at least for a week or two.Right now, I feel better about Miller than Daniels for this week at least.

That could be three, 7 play drives and done for the game. Risky business there.
I think the more important thing to take from this is the "maybe more depending on how he feels" part. I guarantee you if they are in the middle of this big game and slugging it out and OD feels good, he'll be in there.

I don't have him in any leagues, but I wouldn't start him this week. I would hope that anyone who drafted him to be their starter would have had the sense to draft a very capable backup. So put that investment to use and start the backup until you know Daniels is going to play enough to be worth a start.

I hope you're right.I really was hoping there was some report on how he has looked at practice and how the knee was holding up.

All I've seen is this, though it's a week old:

"I felt good," Daniels said. "I was gassed, that's for sure. It's a lot different than just running sprints and catching passes and sprinting up the field. We work on that play clock, that's good, in terms of simulating what it's going to be like in the game. My knee felt really good, but my lungs were hurting."

How much of Kubiak's talk is just "coachspeak"?

First he had a setback.

Then he was only going to play 10 snaps.

Now he is going to play 1/3 of the snaps and "maybe more"????

Interesting.

This is my dilemma too. FWIW, most of the "expert" sites are ranking Owen Daniels in the TE2 range, and Gresham in the TE3 range, even in light of this news. I just hope we hear some more news on Gresham (and Daniels) sometime between now and Sunday.

The latest:

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports...nt/7192530.html

After watching tight end Owen Daniels practice, coach Gary Kubiak plans to play him 20 to 25 plays against Indianapolis.

"I'm feeling good about that right now," Kubiak said about increasing Daniels' playing time. "As far as him starting, let me see how he feels. I want to do whatever is comfortable for him. I don't want the pressure on O.D. To me, the pressure is on us to bring him back the right way."

Daniels, who is playing for the first time since suffering a knee injury in the eighth game at Buffalo, would like to start but is just happy to be back on the field.

"Maybe we'll start two tight ends," Daniels said, meaning he and Joel Dreessen. "The plan all along was to get me ready for this game, and I'm ready to go."
A couple things I took away from this:1. He must look really good in practice for Kubiak to increase his playing time only after watching him.

2. If his knee were at all suspect I think that the statements would be a whole lot different.

3. The coach saying the right things about not wanting to rush him back and showing him some respect.

4. OD again stated that he's ready to go and feeling 100% healthy.

I'm in a wait and see mode until Sunday about OD. My other option is Carlson and I think OD may see more than 25 plays (although probably will still be diminished from his usual amount). I think OD at 25-30 plays is equivalent to a whole game of Carlson where he has to stay in and block for a very poor Seattle O-line.

GTD right here

Kubes: Owen, how's the knee feeling?

OD: 110% coach

Kubes: Get out there

Sep 8 TE Owen Daniels is hoping to play as many as 40 snaps against the Colts. Coach Gary Kubiak said he will watch Daniels in practice and talk to him before he determines how much playing time he'll get considering he hasn't played since the eighth game last season because of a knee injury.
Yeah, I'm starting him. I wouldn't be surprised to see him play almost the whole game if its close and he's feeling good.

By my count his snaps are increasing at a rate of 2 per day

Aug 30: 15-20 (rounded to 18)

Sep 09: 40

Aug 30-Sep 09 = 11 days

40 - 18 = 22 / 11 = 2

By Saturday it will be 44 snaps.

Of course if you use the time and distance from 25 snaps to 40, he'll play somewhere around 80-10k snaps.

Picked him up late and with a short roster policy in our league I didn;t draft another TE. TEs aren't very valuable in my league scoring system, 3-6 pts a week is all I can really expect unless there are TDs. If he looks like he's lacking game fitness I'll drop one of my late round fliers depending on how they look. Not ideal but needs must...

Owen Daniels will play on Sunday. How much isn't quite known.

Daniels, the Houston Texans tight end who hasn't played since sustaining a torn anterior cruciate last November, is expected to play about 20 to 25 plays or more in the regular-season opener Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, Texans coach Gary Kubiak said.

Daniels missed the preseason rehabilitating the injury.

"It's easy for me to tell you all 20-25 plays," Kubiak said. "I'm feeling good about that right now. I'll listen to him, is what I'll do. He's going to play a quarter of the snaps I would say, or a third of the snaps.

"If he tells me he feels good then I may let him go. I'll see how he'll respond to this week's work."

Kubiak said he would wait to determine if Daniels will start.

"I want to do whatever is comfortable for him," Kubiak said. "I don't want the pressure on OD. To me, the pressure is on us to bring him back the right way."

Daniels, a Pro Bowl tight end in 2008, is critical to the Texans' offense. When healthy, he is an ideal second option for quarterback Matt Schaub, with wide receiver Andrew Johnson typically the go-to receiver.

Alright, I'll admit I'm getting the jitters on this one. I have him in two leagues as my starter. In one league I have no backup. In another I have Hernandez.

Team with no backup is dynasty and I could drop Dwyer for a backup. But would anyone consider starting Hernandez over him? If half of Daniels still better than an unproven yet promising rook in a timeshare? I grabbed Hernandez in the second to last round and I think he will be a great value y week 5 or so. Don't want to drop him.

Scheffler is sitting on my WW just daring me to pick him up and start him over OD. I'll probably stick with OD, provided there isn't a setback between now and Sunday.

No way, I'll take OD's 20-25 over Hernandez's likely 10-15

Rotoworld:

Owen Daniels-TE-Texans Sep. 10 - 5:50 pm et Texans coach Gary Kubiak confirmed Friday that Owen Daniels (knee) will start Sunday's opener against Indianapolis. We never thought Daniels was coming off the bench, but the fact remains that Kubiak doesn't plan to use him for more than 25 snaps. He could end up playing more based on the flow of the game, but we'd still bench Daniels in most leagues. There are too many good fantasy options at tight end.
I'm starting him.

I'm starting Celek, benching Daniels.

But if Daniels scores a TD I would not be surprised. he was the No. 1 TE in football for the first half of last year.

If I had Celek I would start him this week too.But I bought in to the Carlson "hype" and now I am not convinced that he does more than play like an offensive lineman and block on every play.

Its sounding more and more that if OD wants to play the whole game he will (unless its a blowout of course).

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports...nt/7195850.html

Tight end Owen Daniels said his knee felt great Friday, but he's concerned about his lungs. In other words, his conditioning.

Coach Gary Kubiak said he planned to play Daniels 25 snaps "and hope he's arguing with me for more . He's ready to go. I've got to be smart with him because he hasn't played in a long time."

There was a time when he suffered a stress fracture of his kneecap, and he worried he might not be ready to play in the opener.

"I'm so excited to get back on the field," Daniels said. "I can't wait to play. To think of where I was and how far I come, words really can't describe what I'm going to be feeling before the game."

Nobody is happier to see Daniels back than quarterback Matt Schaub.

"It's great to have him back," Schaub said. "He really opens up our playbook when we have him because he's a playmaker."

As of now he's in my starting lineup ... but Miller may replace him in the last minute.

In a deep dynasty and picked up Fasano earlier in the week, but now I'm wavering. Thankd for the thread, whodey -- I'll keep checking back.

I go back and forth between he and Heath Miller...was starting Heath, but about to put Daniels back in the game.

Just an upside thing. What am I looking at out of miller? Really basically hoping for 30 and a TD?

With Daniels, his upside is more than that...think Im going to just take a chance with him.
