Owens not talking to media until after Sunday's game

Associated Press

Updated: October 10, 2007, 5:42 PM ET

IRVING, Texas -- A new tactic for Terrell Owens: Instead of talking, he wrote a note.

Even Owens apparently knows the Dallas Cowboys' game Sunday against New England, a pair of 5-0 teams and multiple Super Bowl winners, doesn't need any extra hype.

Nor does Tom Brady vs. Tony Romo, and more interestingly, Owens vs. Randy Moss in a matchup of the league's highest-scoring offenses.

In place of the usually talkative receiver, reporters found at Owens' locker Wednesday a nearly poster-sized, typewritten note:

"Dear Reporters,

"Due to the magnitude of this week's game and high volume of questions for the Original 81 about the other 81. I will be taking all questions immediately following Sunday's game.

"Sincerely, (followed by Owens' signature)

"p.s. Getcha Popcorn Ready."

The "other 81" was an obvious reference to Moss, the controversial five-time Pro Bowl receiver who after two difficult years in Oakland is flourishing in his first season with the Patriots.

Owens' postscript referred to his "get your popcorn ready" comment made when he signed with the Cowboys in the summer of 2006 -- before he caught an NFL-high 13 TDs in his Dallas debut. Owens has 21 catches for 387 yards and three TDs this season.

"I think he's pretty focused. We don't want to give them any bulletin-board material," tight end Jason Witten said. "There's enough said. We all know what the challenge is. ... He's staying focused. He's anxious, excited about the challenge."

Moss is tied for the NFL lead with seven touchdown catches and has a league-high 551 yards (on 34 catches), even after being sidelined much of training camp with a hamstring injury -- similar to Owens' first camp with the Cowboys last year.

While Owens wasn't in the locker room, he was at practice, an unusual Wednesday workout with players in shorts without pads or helmets.

During the open locker room period, several of Owens' teammates stopped and read the note, then walked away smiling.

"It was funny reading it," Chris Canty said. "That's T.O. being T.O. You've got to love that guy."

Plus, they saw bigger messages in Owens' short statement.

"He's going to show it on the field. ... The talk is over. Now it's all about getting prepared and trying to get a win," DeMarcus Ware said.

"Anytime it's a big game, you [reporters] get on that guy pretty good and look for a sound byte," Marcus Spears said. "He's taking a different road. he's letting 5-0 speak for him right now."

When reporters crowded around Romo, whose locker is in a different area of the room, they asked him about Owens' sign.

"I think it's interesting," Romo initially responded. "What is it?"

After being told, Romo quipped, "I may do that, too."

I really hope someone writes an article on how T.O. brushes his teeth. What type of toothbrush is it? Mint toothpaste? Does he use mouthwash?

Seriously, I am just so tired of reporters making stuff like this news.

What else are they going to report on a wed.? They gotta fill space. Can you imagine a 30 second sports center or a two page sports page? That doesn't sell. Capitalism. Can't live with it. Can't shove it up Chris "WHOOOOP" Berman's ###.

You came into this thread so it's something that clearly you have an interest in. Why would (should) reporters stop giving us what we want? All of us-you, me, everyone else-eat this kind of stuff up.I love me some T.O. Always good for some laughs and he's always busted his butt to play the game. He's not the smartest man to ever walk the planet but he's a damned good football player.

Seriously....LOL.Did you think ESPN was going to report facts? That doesn't sell Chevy trucks or Miller Light.

Just curious, do Owens and Moss ever talk to each other? I don't know how many times they have played each other, but do they have any relationship or do they just ignore each other?

Just another example of the Cowboys preparing for their Super Bowl while the Patriots get ready for Week 6. ;)
preparing for their 9th Super Bowl :football:

*victory that is
They only won 5. LOL....'only'....
what are you talking about? they've won 3. and lost 2. they've been to 5 total. the TO stuff just gets old - and folks, it's hard to blame this one on the media. it's clearly a TO-driven event, since he posted the note on his locker to get attention, as always.

Correct.

TO has gotten a lot of flak from fans and media alike -- much of it largely deserved, some, IMO, not as much.

Regardless of whether you love or hate or are ambivalent to TO, there are a few undeniable facts:

1) He is freakishly talented

2) He has consistently remained one of the best WRs in the league over the last ten years.

3) It appears he has matured in many ways in comparison to years' past. Gone are the constant sideline shouting matches, self-serving press tirades, public battles with players and coaches, etc.

I may not have always loved me some TO during his low points, but I sure am loving me some of the new and improved -- and more silent -- TO

If I was an elite professional athlete like TO, I'd leave notes like that too.

Having been around hundreds of them, 9/10 sportswriters are lazy, useless morons.

That is pretty much what I thought, but then again, the Patriots are a top team, win, lose or draw this week. The Cowboys are probably using this game as a barometer for how good they really are. So, in that respect, this game is more important to Dallas. New England will most likely still win, though.

For a guy who doesn't want to create bulletin-board material, he did it in his note.

"Due to the magnitude of this week's game and high volume of questions for the Original 81 about the other 81. I will be taking all questions immediately following Sunday's game."

He's the original, Moss is "the other?" Regardless of how new that number is to Moss, that's a slap. Probably not a good idea for the Cowboys to slap at the Patriots. You don't want it to get ugly, Dallas.

:goodposting: I didn't see it that way at all. In his own way, he went "I'm not talking to the press" without doing so in a way as to incur the wrath of the NFL press police. He went passive-aggressive in a humorous way.I'm guessing he's got much more respect for "the other 81" than most defenders he lines up against.

I'm amazed at how good you guys think the Patriots are......like if the Patriots WANTED to, they could beat them so bad it would hurt.Listen, bring everything you got New England. Play it anyway you want. Say this is Dallas's Super bowl while it's another game for New England so that if Dallas does win, you shrug it off. Say that if Dallas gets killed, it's because they opened up their mouths 1 to many times......whatever. Dallas is in the perfect situation because everyone in the world thinks NE is the greatest team of all time. This is a big game but also a true measuring stick for the Cowboys who haven't played anyone yet this year. So, if they win, lose close or get killed they will be able to go back to the drawing board one way or another and try and improve. So bring it all, bring it often and let's just see how good New England really is.Keep in mind Dallas is the all time leader in Super Bowl appearances, not New England. So these references about it's just another week for New England and it's Dallas's SB are comical.

Is the magnitude of any other game less?

Its probably better that TO left a note and is not talking to the media. He has a tendency to say dumb things. I'm looking forward to his presser after the game when he is asked about the final stat line for him and the other 81.

TO going against NE's secondary will be more difficult than Moss going against Mr. Horse Collar and that fat guy from Seinfeld.

He's just telling us ahead of time that it will be about 40 yards, no TD's, and 5 or 6 drops. Just like against the Bills on Monday Night.

Yeah that was a funny statement, I mean that is a statement you make a to a franchise that has never been to the big game not the franchise that has been there more then any other team in the league period. Nonsense is what that is. Don't start making excuses if by chance the Pats lose that this was not a big game for the Pats and it meant the world to Dallas. To put it quite simply this game should mean more to the Pats then Dallas cause the Pats play in the AFC and it will probably take 13-15 wins to get home field while it will take Dallas about 11-13 to get their home field. Stop playing down how much this means for the Pats just to be able to save a little face if in fact they go down.

Maybe. NE doesn't give up a lot of yards but they have given up more TDs than Dallas through the air. This is an incredible match-up. I do think NE is the better team, but the stats of both teams are incredibly close. Looking forward to this one. And as TO says....

Technically he may not be "talking", but he is yapping and saying "Please, I want, no make that need, to be the center of attention of the media." This is the same old T.O. Imagine if he either poops himself as he did against the Bills, or if he doesn't get opportunities due to the defense. If either happens he will start his pouting and his demands for more balls. He stands ready to tear this team apart. Yes, he has not done so yet because of success, but if any percieved adversity hits he will revert to form.

Here's where you're mistaken, and it's a pretty big mistake. I'm sure that no one in the Patriots locker room thinks this. Go ahead and try to make the argument that anyone in the Patriots organization is going to look down on or look past the Cowboys. Ain't happenin. The "greatest team of all time" stuff is fodder for fantasy football forums and ESPN analysts.

The not talking is just another attention grabbing ploy Owens has not done much the last couple of weeks and needed his name splashed around.

Ya, who do you know in the Patriots locker room to make this assumption? Also, I didn't say that NE or the people in their organization will look past this game. I said the world thinks NE is this great team so that puts Dallas in a win win situation. Even if they lose, it's expected. Not by Dallas or Dallas fans but in general it's expected that Dallas loses this game because they're playing New England. It has nothing to do with what the individual players and coaches think on each side, I'm talking about the fallout after the game by fans and media. If Dallas loses, it's another NFC loss to an elite team and no big deal. If New England loses, all the talk about their perfect season and all these early season records go up in smoke. There is A LOT more pressure on New England to win this game than Dallas. Sure, it's important for Dallas to win, keep going etc... but New England has Indianapolis to worry about. They are also undefeated. If they lose this game to Dallas, they means obviously they're very beatable. Then, on top of falling behind a game to Indianpolis, they play in INdy.....making that game a MUST win game to get home field advantage because if they lost that game, assuming the colts and Pats haven't lost again, the Pats would be down 2.5 games due to the head to head loss.Very, Very big game for the Patriots this Sunday.

I disagree. If Dallas loses and Washington keeps winning, they are then even in the loss column. That is just as important as NE staying even with Indy. Besides, like I have said before, from a psyche standpoint, you know the Cowboys are viewing this game as a litmus test for how good they really are. The Patriots and everyone else knows that they (the Pats) are one of the top two teams in the NFL, so, win, lose, or draw, their standing as a top team remains after this Sunday. If the Cowboys win, most will consider them a real contender who can compete in the Super Bowl this January if they get there. If they lose to the Patriots, most will write them off as another NFC patsy who is going to get their clock cleaned by the AFC in the playoffs.

You confirm my entire point......you just said the Patriots and everyone else KNOWS that they are one of the top two teams in the NFL. So, ALL the pressure is on them. This actually would have been more of an important game for Dallas if they would have lost to Buffalo, because this could have been their 2nd loss.As far as your point about Washington, it's not the same. Washington isn't undefeated like Indy. Washington has already lost to the Giants at home, a team Dallas scored 45 points on. So to say that it's the same is almost a joke.

On the biggest stage there is the SB, Terell Owens outplayed everyone on the field in a losing effort. How has Moss done on that stage?

LOLI actually agree with your post, but not your conclusion.Moss will destroy Owens this week. But, I agree. Owens showed up to the Bowl and Donovan let him down.Moss didn't get to the bowl because the team was coached by Denny Green. Otherwise it might have happened. Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda don't you know.

the amount of hate for T.O. boggles my mind.

People just love to wax conjecturally about his motives all the time. I'm not sure if they realize how petty they come off.

MNF is a big game to players. That game last year when he botched the hold was pretty big. I question his ability to deliver agaisnt a good team when it matters.

I think it is because Owens has been a petty, selfish player his whole career. Owens is reaping what he has sowed.

I think Moss has the potential for a Monster game where I don't think Owens does. This is purely speculated because I think Dallas might be weaker in the safety area in pass coverage. However, I do think Owens is capable of a 100 and a TD type game, in fact he'll probably have to have something like that for Dallas to be competitive.

It ,ust be because people are talking about what a good job Romo did in sticking in there and overcoming 6 turnovers, and yet sports shows are railing on To for 2 crucial drops, 1 of which was a tough low grab from a hort throw by the saintly Romo. A catch a WR of TO's ego should make, but tough for anyone.

Dallas is in the perfect situation because everyone in the world thinks NE is the greatest team of all time.
How is their more pressure on New England? Given their schedules, NE is more likely to go undefeated (outside of the Indy game) than the Colts are, so the Patriots can probably afford to lose this game. If they lose this game and beat the Colts, they are in fine shape. And even if they don't get home field, does anyone doubt NE's ability to win a road playoff game? I think not. Meanwhile, Dallas isn't going to keep playing patsies all year, so they are likely to lose some games, so winning each and every game is necessary, especially with a team like Washington on their heels. Dallas needs every win they can get to stay ahead in the face for the NFC East title. That is why it is more important to them. And that is with the psyche thing I mentioned earlier notwithstanding.

TO hasnt caught a TD pass in 3 weeks. 3 scores the 1st 2 weeks, but hasnt had one since. And while Im sure he's not displeased that theyre winning, dont kid yourself into thinking that he's unaware this team is winning without him scoring. The longer he goes without scoring in the NE game, the more chance he has of blowing up. Especially considering all the hype that his greatest rival Moss has been getting. So from that perspective, I hope NE keeps him out of the endzone the entire game. God, that would be fun to watch. As for the note, Randy Moss seems to be surviving in NE without either giving notes or talking to any media. Just heard a NE reporter on the radio this morning say Moss basically hasnt spoken to anyone since the Jets game. So keeping quiet, playing at a high level, helping your team win, and NOT writing silly little notes to poke subtle little jabs at your greatest peer arent nessecary.
TO won't get one this week either. Moss will outshine him on the big stage.Oh, and I'm a TO owner, not a Moss owner.
On the biggest stage there is the SB, Terell Owens outplayed everyone on the field in a losing effort. How has Moss done on that stage?
He got a slew of yds, but how many TDs did TO score in the game? and then that idiot acted after the game like his team had just WON the game. Moss is 6-0 lifetime against Dallas with over 600yds and 10TDs. TDs. and WINS. Philly actually WON 2 games in the playoffs on their way to the Superbowl without the guy.

the amount of hate for T.O. boggles my mind.People just love to wax conjecturally about his motives all the time. I'm not sure if they realize how petty they come off.
You dont think that silly little note was petty? thats exactly what it was. Professionals dont do things like that. Only attention starved guys like TO and Chad Johnson find that kind of thing nessecary. Situps in the driveway. Hammering McNabb in the press while he was still a teammate right after the Superbowl. Calling Jeff Garcia a ######. It just gets old with the guy. He has his moments. I loved the pom pom thing. But he's the one that's petty, and it often brings out the worst in fans.
