Owner dropped out after draft order picked... (1 Viewer)

Just had a guy drop out almost two weeks after we did the draft order, and found another owner (who already co-owned another team) to take his spot. However, the guy that dropped out had the #1 pick. Should we just give the new guy his spot, or put all the teams in and pick the draft order again? We do have two weeks until the draft. Input from league members has been mixed....just want some more input on what would be fair for everyone.

My original thought was just to give him the team and the draft slot, since we all already had our draft slot, and regardless of who was picking at #1, it wasn't any of us. But like I said, league members are about 50/50 on whether we should pick the draft order over. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I say give him the spot. Its not messing anyone else's strategy up. Everyone has known for two weeks where they are picking, and had you not had a co-owner take the team that #1 Spot would have been a big selling point to a new owner.

Keep it how it is and roll.

BTW with draft in 2 weeks how many rounds is it? Thats a pretty late draft

Keep it the way it is. I don't even see the debate w/in the league.

. Of course you're going to get a mixed reaction from biased league members. If he got say #12 pick, you wouldn't hear a peep.

We draft the Sat. before the league starts....so its on the 5th of Sept and its 25 rounds (IDP league). I was leaning towards keeping it the same anyway, just wanted some other input. Thanks.

That's just sad! What are you going to do? Keep redoing the random draft order until everyone is happy with their spot? Don't open that can of worms.

I'd let him walk and find another owner, but if you want to coddle him...open up trading of draft picks or draft positions. Someone in the league would surely like to have the #1 pick. In my main league, we draw numbers and choose our draft order. The 12th person is stuck with the last remaining slot of course.

A nice rule for the future of your league, all $ must be paid in full before the draft order is determined.

Yea I know....he's definitely getting the lifetime ban from ever getting back in. We had a guy take the spot, and I'm giving him the guys #1 pick.

That is the right call IMO.

We had the same thing happen this year. A few weeks after we had picked our draft order I get a call from one of the guys telling me that he isn't going to be in our league anymore. We filled the spot within 24 hrs. and I gave him the previous owners draft position. It is the #2 spot.

Give him the #1 spot and don't worry about it. Everyone will forget it soon enough.

I just wanted to chime in on a couple of points.

1. This is a very good microcosm of what happens in a lot of non FBG dominated leagues(I hear there are some of them out there)...I'm in a local league of 15 years and this sounds like something that would happen in that league. I could see them all whining and crying that "The new guy just walks in and gets the #1 spot, it's not fair, boo hoo hoo"...so before everyone rolls their eyes at this thread do understand that it is quite more the norm out there in the Reality World.

2. I would send a storng message to the league that they have known about it for 2 weeks and no matter who picks first their strategy doesn't change. There are likely owners that are worried now that they might lose to the new guy who has never paid a nickel into the league. This is why a lot of people out there stop playing in money leagues. The stakes are never enough to change your lifestyle but they seem to always be enough to ruin friendships over a lousy $50 entry fee.

Good thread, terrible problem, but one that should make you an even better commish for the future, good luck.

I agree wif MoP. Anyone arguing for something other than letting the new guy take the #1 is just being a selfish #####.

next year draw picks at the draft
No way. you need to know going into the draft where your drafting.Keep the picks the same order and give the new guy the old guys pick....just happens in this case to be the #1. Thinking about though.....you coud put the new guys slot up for bid. Give the #1 pick to the highest bidder (which just goes into the general pool) and let the new guy take over that winning bidders draft slot.Money talks

+1 to making sure everyone is paid up prior to setting the draft order.

No need to change anything now, MoP summed it up perfectly.

I'm in a redraft league that drafts in reverse order of last years finish. I don't really like that system, but that is not the point of me posting. It just so happens that we had to replace 2 owners this year. The 2 owners who quit finished last and next to last. The 2 new owners drafted 1 and 2. Nobody complained.

Why is it so important to know where you're drafting? Sure, it cuts down on prep time, but really, don't you need to figure out the relative value of all the players ahead of time, especially if you're in multiple leagues? Our draft league determines the draft order by rolling dice/picking names out of a hat 5 minutes before the draft starts and it's a blast never really knowing ahead of time where you're going to wind up. (Obviously this doesn't hold true for keeper league drafts, but that's a different story.)

Personally, I like the added "excitement" of not knowing the draft order prior to draft day. Its also good for all owners to "witness" the process. I can't imagine a guy would show up to draft and then walk out right after the names are drawn from a hat.

It might be easy to whine about a #1 pick going to a newbie but look at the downside of that #1 pick: your second pick is a long way away.

I think we are seeing more dropouts because a lot of people just have more life-stress this time of year than last year. The guy who had to bail in one of my leagues lost his FT job and had to get 2 p/t jobs to tide him over while he job-hunts on top of that.
