Two years too late but at least it's finally happened:

The Green Bay Packers on Tuesday released cornerback Ahmad Carroll. Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson made the announcement.

Carroll, the Packers’ first-round selection in the 2004 NFL Draft, played 34 games in three seasons, starting 28 contests. He had 104 tackles (95 solo), three interceptions, three sacks, 26 passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Burnt man gone. I don't care who his backup is, he has to be 10X better.
Wow. You have not watched a lot of Packer football, have you?The two undrafted rookies will now be thrown into the fire. It's only going to get worse folks...
I don't believe so. Seriously, an undrafted rookie couldn't be worse than Carroll. He is seriously one of the worst CBs in the entire league. No matter who the Packers throw out there as a replacement, at worst it'll be a wash if they also stink to high heaven. Carroll was beyond abysmal.

True, true...Any word on Blackmon's injury? He showed promise in the offseason before getting injured. Maybe he's ready to contribute.

I thought they would after watching that game...but my question would be this. What about bringing in someone from the bench to take his spot? I'm sure he has been torched repeatedly in the past 2-3 seasons. I remember Jimmy Johnson doing this in Miami...I think it was Gene Atkins who got burned really bad on a couple of plays during JJ's 1st or 2nd season...he cut him and basically said if you can't start then I don't need you.Too bad Carroll is the scapegoat for GB, I'm sure someone will pick Carroll up though and put him into their system as maybe a nickleback.

 He sucks.
The decision comes a day after Carroll and the Packers' secondary was torched by Donovan McNabb and the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football.Carroll got beat for a long touchdown and committed two coverage penalties in the 31-9 loss. He also was beat for a 31-yard completion at the end of the first half that put the Eagles in position to score. After the game, Carroll said he apologized to the secondary for his performance, which included giving up receptions of 31, 45 and 23 yards and committing a 14-yard pass interference penalty and a hold that was declined on the 23-yarder. Carroll was the 25th pick in the 2004 draft. He has played in 34 games in three seasons, starting 28 of them. He had 104 tackles (95 solo), three interceptions, three sacks, 26 passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

That was my first thought.

He was playing nickleback for the Packers - backing up Woodson and Harris. The Eagles did a better job of finding and isolating him than most other teams have don, fully exposing his weakness on national television. That said, although I am no Carroll defender, I think management may have overreacted here. Carroll has been a problem in the lockerrom and on the field since he was drafted, but he did show some flashes of the speed and talent needed to be a starting NFL corner. Nonetheless, I like the statement Thompson is making here as Carroll is added to an incresingly long list of formerly highly-regarded players brought in during the Wolf/Sherman years.

You must not watch alot of Packer games if you think Carroll is being cast as a scapegoat. He sucks plus he has a bad attitude. His chest thumping whenever he made a play, which wasn't very often, got old real quick. Good riddance!

He liked to do this at Arkansas also. One game vs. Florida or Tennessee he was burned all day, Arkansas was down by 3 or 4 TDs, he gives up a 15 yard completion but makes the tackle and he jumps up thumping his chest and pointing at the other team. 15 yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. It was a big shock even in AR when he was picked that early.

I just wonder how Batman ended up getting drafted in the 1st round to begin with. I never thought he was worthy of that draft position after watching him in college. He's slightly undersized, grabs and holds a lot and was like this all throughout college. He runs a fast 40 and bam, he's a first rounder.

Got to love these after-the-fact posts. :D I told everyone that Akili Smith would bust, but nobody listened.

I can not speak for the poster who wrote that above but the opinion that Ahmad Carroll was a wasted pick was a popular one...even when he was drafted late 1st round. The Packer fans remembered the ghost of Terrell Buckley and didn't want another speedy, undersized cornerback with a me first attitude playing at Lambeau Field for the green and gold.TBuck went on to have a productive career. I highly doubt Ahmad Carroll will be around 3 years from now.

Ron Wolf trained Sherman to draft. You always take the best athlete. You can train them to be football players later.Wolf was much better at picking up free agents than drafting. Sherman was a good coach but very bad at judging personel.

no way to prove it, but I can say I was quite shocked he was getting 1st round pub after watching him a few times. The only time we get to talk about it is after the fact. Not like there's a running Ahmad Carroll thread going on...unless I missed it? :D

who was in charge of drafting Jamal Reynolds out of FSU?

Has anyone seen Carroll and former Patriot Chris Canty in the same room. They are so similar it's scary.

I wouldn't be suprised if Crennel/Savage at least placed a phone call after the news of his release.

Know what I remember about Carroll? Watching Devery Henderson just absolutely humiliate him during the Senior Bowl that year. It was ridiculous, Henderson looked like Holt-on-crack. I keep wondeing if this guy could play FS, does he have decent ball-skills at all? I've never been able to tell since I don't think I've ever seen him close enough to make a play on the ball!!

Good riddance! Man, he was terrible....

Does anybody remain from the 2004 draft class? I don't even think their second pick CB Joey Thomas is in the NFL - 2 years after being drafted:

2004

1 1 25 25 Ahmad Carroll DB Arkansas

2 3 7 70 Joey Thomas DB Montana State

3 3 9 72 Donnell Washington DT Clemson

4 3 24 87 B.J. Sander P Ohio State

5 6 14 179 Corey Williams DT Arkansas State

6 7 50 251 Scott Wells C Tennessee

Even the guys drafting them are gone. Literatally.

Poor Batman. Arkansas talk radio was discussing this today and one of the local guys stated that Carroll probably is the least well-liked former Razorback in history. His chest thumping schtick got old during two-a-days his freshman season. He would get burned and have a receiver drop a pass, and then get in the guy's face like he had something to do with the incompletion. Just a putz.

Wells is starting at C and Williams is decent for spot-duty at DT - had a couple sacks against Detroit week 3.Joey Thomas was cut under very similar circumstances to Batman - had a terrible game at the Metrodome last season and was cut a couple days later.

Watch NE pick him up and make him a quality starter by week 10!

That is what they do. As a Colts fan, I hate it! I admire their ability to get it done, but I hate it nonetheless!

This is Ahmad Carroll we're talking about...it will never happen.

This means that Will Blackmon is ready
 it means Ahmad Carroll sucks.Blackmon is more of a project CB than anything. Sure he played some in college, but he is very raw. Expect him to be tested and give up some big plays if he does indeed get the start (I wouldn't think he'd be the first guy they throw in there)

St. Louis is coming to Green Bay this week.

As an owner of Holt and Bruce, let me be the first to say.... :banned: :banned: :banned:

If Linehan is smart, his pass:run ratio this week will be 98:2.

guy is not the scapegoat. he was MISERABLE.gave up 2 td's yesterday, a couple long completions and had 3-4 penalties.sadly, that's about the average game for him. AND HE'S NOT EVEN A STARTER. dude is not going to learn. he can't play w/o clutching, grabbing, pushing, shoving. and he's just not smart enough (apparently) to pick up on WR's tricks. he's far & away the #1 target of every QB when he's on the field. he didn't get cut because of 1 bad game. he got cut because of 36 really bad games in a row. i mean REALLY bad.

 Wolf's mantra was "take players from winning programs who have multiple years experience"

Sherman's mantra was "man he looks like an athlete.. whaddya say? we should take him, no?"

HE DRAFTED A GUY WHO DIDN'T PLAY COLLEGE FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HE TOOK A GUY IN THE 3RD ROUND WHO WAS A BACKUP FOR A MIDDLING COLLEGE FOOTBALL TEAM AND WHO HAD A REPUTATION FOR BEING LAZY AND UNMOTIVATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall: :wall:

Agreed, the only reason Carroll lasted as long as he did is because he was a 1st round pick. Any other player would have been cut long ago - he's terrible and I can't imagine anyone who has watched him play not saying the same thing. Put it this way - put him on the Chargers last year and he wouldn't even be the nickel back.

But he'd be on the short list to be Oakland's starting QB.

I wasn't disagreeing Furley. The Gene ATkins reference was to show this has some set precedence as well. I think I should have gotten a little more love for making reference to Gene Atkins, c'mon!

Anyone else catch that McCarthy didn't even call him by his proper name at the press conference announcing his release? Called him Ahman Carroll. Kind of sums up the guy's worth as an NFL player...
