Pacman gets 16 games - Henry 8 games (1 Viewer)

NFL suspends Pacman Jones and Bengals' Henry

(April 10, 2007) -- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has informed Adam Jones of the Tennessee Titans and Chris Henry of the Cincinnati Bengals that they have been suspended without pay for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy and engaging in conduct detrimental to the league on numerous occasions, the NFL announced today.

Jones was suspended for the 2007 season, while Henry was suspended for the first eight games of the 2007 regular season. Each player must earn the right to be reinstated.

“We must protect the integrity of the NFL,” Commissioner Goodell said. “The highest standards of conduct must be met by everyone in the NFL because it is a privilege to represent the NFL, not a right. These players, and all members of our league, have to make the right choices and decisions in their conduct on a consistent basis.”

In a letter to each player, Commissioner Goodell wrote: “Your conduct has brought embarrassment and ridicule upon yourself, your club, and the NFL, and has damaged the reputation of players throughout the league. You have put in jeopardy an otherwise promising NFL career, and have risked both your own safety and the safety of others through your off-field actions. In each of these respects, you have engaged in conduct detrimental to the NFL and failed to live up to the standards expected of NFL players. Taken as a whole, this conduct warrants significant sanction.”

Jones will be strictly monitored by the Titans and the NFL during the suspension as part of his opportunity to earn reinstatement through adherence to a set of conditions. His status will be reviewed after the Titans’ 10th regular-season game to determine the extent to which he has complied with the conditions and whether the suspension should be affected by the disposition of any pending or prospective charges.

The specific conditions that apply to Jones’ suspension include the following:

 He must have no further adverse involvement with law enforcement.  He must fully cooperate with all required counseling, education, and treatment assigned under league or court-ordered programs.  He must adhere to the restrictions on his activities that have been agreed to by he and the Titans.  He may not be at the Titans’ facility through May 31 and may not participate in any practices or organized workouts during the term of the suspension. Beginning June 1, he must visit the team facility once each week to meet with the team’s player development director. Also, beginning June 1, he is permitted to spend one day a week at the team facility for conditioning, film study, and other similar activities.  In conjunction with the team’s player development director and other professionals working with him, Jones must develop with the Titans a structured program of community service or other activity. This program must be submitted to the league office for review and approval.

Henry will be reinstated after the Bengals’ eighth regular-season game if he meets certain conditions during his suspension that will be monitored closely by the Bengals and the NFL. Those conditions include the following:

 He must have no further adverse involvement with law enforcement.  He must fully cooperate with all required counseling, education, and treatment assigned to him under league programs.  He is eligible to be at the Bengals’ facilities during the rest of the offseason for customary activities and he must meet weekly with the team’s player development director.  If he fully complies with all other conditions, he may participate in the Bengals’ training camp and preseason games.  During the regular season, he is permitted to be at the Bengals’ facility for team meetings and must meet weekly with the team’s player development director, but he may not attend or participate in practice.  He must fully comply with all conditions imposed on him by any court, including requirements of community service.

Jones and Henry were told that any failure to comply with these conditions will result in additional discipline, including possible banishment from the league.

“I must emphasize to you that this is your last opportunity to salvage your NFL career,” Commissioner Goodell wrote to Jones and Henry. “I urge you to take full advantage of the resources available to support you in that effort.”

Only question i have is how can they inforce a rule on actions that took place before the policy was put in place? Didn't know they could make those actions retroactive. But I guess so.

Was he suspended for the season or 16 games? If Tennessee makes the playoffs, can he play?
From above link...
Jones was suspended for the 2007 season
Ok. Thats what I thought. The way it was posted above though would suggest he would be available for playoffs.

I am sure there is some clause in his contract about behavior that is detrimental to the team, nfl, etc etc. Just like when the Eagles suspended T.O.

Actually, it is under the current rules, under conduct detrimental to the league. From what I heard on the radio it is unclear what constitutes conduct detrimental and the appropriate punishment and it is pretty much left up to the commish. The new policy is meant to have clearer guidelines.

I like this. Sets a good precedent.

I am sure that the Players Assoc. will appeal and the suspensions will get knocked down some.

thats what i thought but I also thought that there were guideline to suspension for a year. like 4 games then a year. Not that I care for either of these guys just wondering if the NFL is playing by their own rules. Or is Goddell trying to make a name/statement. Does anyone think these suspensions will hold up?

Henry has no chance at playing in the other 8 games. I'd wager he'll get arrested at least 8 more times before week 9. Henry might not make it rain like Pacman, but he's twice as dumb.

Cue Bil Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson in 5 4 3 2...oh nvm, they too busy acting as if Imus pissed on the Rutgets family graves and raped their dead ancestors.

/clap @ NFL

if they start suspending people in the NFL for being stupid... there won't be anyone left!

Bramel and Bloom better start training.... they may get a call to suit up!

:boxing: :bs: :lmao:
That's funny? They were in the race until Week 17 last season.
:lmao:  :lmao: Tennessee has had a terrible off season. The Turner BS to me was just some window dressing to their fans to make it look like they were trying. They let Henry and Bennett go, where has their offense gotten better? Seriously. And now they lose Pacman for their defense who they invested a high 1st round pick in a couple of seasons back...Tennessee is going in the wrong direction. The 8-8 record last season hides their overall talent...if Fisher were not the coach they would be an even stronger candidate to finish 4-12 or below this season. I will take all bets for the Titans making the playoffs this year...will not happen.

I'll take "Sleeper WRs" for 200, alex.

The answer is: "These four WRs have a chance to step up and take

Chris Henry's #3 spot while he's suspended"

*buzz*

Who are Tab Perry, Bennie Brazzell, Glenn Holt, and Reggie McNeal?

edit to add: Perry has the most upside and is a guy I have been stashing on all my deep dynasty rosters for this eventuality. He actually started out the year well last year - a big WR who is also a speedster (check his kick return yardage - as a Steeler fan, I hated seeing him with the ball in his hands after a Steeler score). The fact that they let Washington walk tells me that Perry's hip is going to be ok.

if he can stay out of trouble he is who i would put my money on.

Also in Henrys case isnt this like Double Jeopardy. I might be wrong but didn't he already get suspended for this already?
Henry has had multiple arrests and has plead guilty (plea bargained IIRC) to reckless driving and supplying underage girls with alcohol. He also had driving infractions in multiple states for driving with his license under suspension. I'm sure I'm missing some other run ins with the courts/law, but he's had plenty of indescretions since his suspension last year.

lol nice. I think whoever steps in as the #3 in Cinn has a good chance at having a decent year since CJ is often injured during games.

I don't know why you laugh. Ten won 6 of their last 7 games w/ V. Young at QB and finished 8-8. They have a real good shot at being in the playoffs.
And GB went 8-8 IIRC last season and they still have less talent on that team than probably 24 other NFL teams...they are bottom 25% for sure. SF was winning games last season and did go out and sign some big talent...but they still don't have weapons for Alex Smith, Davis is not ready at TE, Turner left for SD HC job...do you think SF is going to make the playoffs?Who cares how many games teams win the year before. You evaluate what is happening now.

Lets take 2 teams form the AFC Championship.

Indy: Has lost June and Harper on their defense...probably not as good right now as they were last season. Lost some role players on offense...will be hard pressed to repeat. Very hard pressed.

New England: Went 12-4 last season but now they went out and got Thomas to upgrade their defense. Signed Stallworth, and Welker to bolster their offense and provide Brady with some weapons. They are a team that even though they won 12 games last season they went out and got better, much better IMO and they are the front runner to win the SB IMO.

In fact, the AFC is already down to a handful of teams that have a chance. NE, Baltimore, and the dark horse is Denver right now. I don't see where most of the other teams have gotten any better. The NFC is a lot more wide open but even there we could probably thin it down to a few teams.

Offseason is far from over. Agreed they have lost a bit with T. Henry, D. Bennett, & P. Jones. But they still have an NFL draft to find replacements and also still could make trades.

My understanding is that the way the league rules are written right now, Goodell has great latitude to impose any type of punishment he chooses. I'm sure both parties will appeal but not sure if they will succeed in getting a reduction.

:lmao: After missing out on the Stallworth/Curtis sweepstakes and not pursuing Turner to an extent that would indicate interest, its hard to be so optimistic about their prospects- even within the division. Both Houston and Jacksonville have retained or acquired key parts.

Seriously, another reason to love the nfl. If only they would start this in the NBA, then maybe I would start watching it again....

No Double Jeopardy in the NFL. Repeat violations equal more punishment.
After his 4 game suspension all of that other news was old news from what I have read on this board. the only thing I could think of since was just recently for driving with a suspended license and although that may be stupid but that is a traffic violation and has nothing to do with the NFL. And by that standard player will start getting suspended for speeding tickets?

ack, how could I forget ole reliable Antonio Chatman. I think Cincy will be just fine at WR without Henry.
Raises the likelihood of a pass catching TE in the draft. And almost assuredly means the Bengals look at a WR again in the 4th or later. And I don't think one player gets all the value here. Perry gets the possession looks, Chatman the deep looks.

I am not arguing that Tenessee will make the playoffs. I am just saying its possible for them to make it. They still have a decent team that has proven they can win some games. To laugh at the idea that they can make the playoffs is off base. I think they will be fighting for a wild card spot when all is said and done. If they get it or not is hard to say right now, but if they make a few moves before the offseason is over to shore up some needed areas, they can very well be in the hunt.
