Cole suggests the Raiders offer a third-rounder in 2013 that could increase to a second- or even first-rounder depending on Palmer's performance.
This is just crazy enough to actually happen. The Raiders seem hell bent on mortgaging their future to collect a bunch of players for a run this year. It's foolish for sure, as the Raiders upside for this season is likely a 1st round playoff elimination. I could see them doing this, however, leaving their draft cupboard bare for years to come. Face it, it's the Raider way.
Can I get a quick history lesson here? I have only been following the Raiders for 30 years, so my history might be a little spotty. When have the Raiders left the draft cupboard bare for years? Never mind, don't answer, I actually do know that answer (never).
Which players are we mortgaging our future for? If this team gets any younger, they won't be allowed to drink.
I'm not saying the Raiders aren't young and I'm not saying they constantly leave their cupboard bare. I'm saying they consistently make these moonshot roster moves that no other NFL Franchise would do.
For 2012, their picks look like:
R2 - The Patriots own it. (Raiders got a 3rd and 4th this year I think)
R3 - None. They have Terrelle Pryor instead.
R4 - None. They have a broken Jason Campbell instead.
R7 - None. They have Aaron Curry instead.
The Curry thing is a caluclated gamble. It may prove to be a steal, but NFL scouts seem to think Curry has bust written all over him, so we'll have to wait and see.
I get the idea that you sometimes have to shoot the moon, but from these moves it's pretty hard to tell what year the Raiders think they are shooting for. Presumably, it's this year, and these moves were constructed to try and get one more deep playoff run while Davis was still around.
The Raiders are like the guy at the Craps table who sits there for hours constantly making bets on the Big 6 and the Big 8 and eveyone just looks at him.
Sometimes (like with Curry), he may collect some jack, but in the end he's heading out of the casino without much in his pocket.
Let's break them down, these one year moves:
R2 - The Patriots own it. (Raiders got a 3rd and 4th this year I think)--They did. They took a CB and an OT. Not a one year move. Two players last year for one the next. This kind of move happens all the time.
R3 - None. They have Terrelle Pryor instead.--A one year, moonshot move? You don't even believe that.
R4 - None. They have a broken Jason Campbell instead.-- Ah, he's broken. They should have known he was going to break his collarbone two years ago when they traded a 4th rounder for him, stupid Raiders. Does anyone have a problem with this move? Sucks he got hurt, but he has been well worth a 4th rounder.
R7 - None. They have Aaron Curry instead.--Calculated gamble. #4 pick in 2009. For a 7th and a 5th or 4th, how high are your expectations?
So, traded a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 7th, and got DeMarcus Van Dyke, Joseph Barksdale, Terrelle Pryor, Jason Campbell, and Aaron Curry.
I think people can reasonable question the Terrelle Pryor move. Aside from that, it's tough to see the wasting of draft picks for a shot THIS YEAR.
I hope we can add draft picks next year. How do two 3's or a 3rd and a 4th sound to you? Sound good to me. Maybe we can get them for Robert Gallery and Nnamdi Asomougha.
See, re-signing those two was a moonshot roster move we were told the Raiders were dumb for not making. Raiders offensive line? Managing to scrape along without Gallery, who apparently is injured in Seattle (shocking news to Raider fans, I can tell you). Defense? The same. Gets big plays, lets up big plays. Nnamdi has really put Philly over the top, hasn't he?
Regarding this line:

This team is constructed young, we have all seen teams that are constructed for one big push. The Favre Vikings, etc. I don't see how they have mortgaged the future, we just got our 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 7th round picks early.
Next year we will have a 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th. At LEAST, if not two 3rd rounders. Sounds good to me.
