Panthers Thinking about Trading Steve Smith (1 Viewer)

No link yet. This blurb is on FF Mastermind, referencing ESPN:

ESPN's Matt Mosley reports the Carolina Panthers are considering trading WR Steve Smith, who has been suspended for the first two regular-season games for punching teammate CB Ken Lucas in the face and breaking his nose during training camp. Smith has become a divisive force on the team. One Panthers source said that several defensive backs were walking around after the recent incident saying that if management didn't discipline Smith, they would. This isn't exactly the best way to begin a season.

OK. Here's the link from the ESPN blog. ESPN speculating Dallas as a destination. (Isn't every potentially available wideout linked to Dallas at somepoint?)

Smith to the Cowboys?

August 4, 2008 4:42 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Matt Mosley

I have a call into my esteemed NFC South blog colleague Pat Yasinskas about the status of wide receiver Steve Smith, who has been suspended for the first two regular-season games for punching teammate Ken Lucas in the face during training camp.

There have been rumblings out of Panthers camp that club officials are fed up with Smith's actions (not just the latest incident) and are at least considering the idea of dealing him to another team.

The idea of trading one of the best receivers in football seems far-fetched, but Smith has become a divisive force on the team. One Panthers source said that several defensive backs were walking around after the recent incident saying that if management didn't discipline Smith, they would. This isn't exactly the best way to begin a season.

All that to say that I know an owner in the NFC East who has spent the last four months coveting another star wide receiver. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones struckout with Chad Johnson, the Lions' Roy Williams and Anquan Boldin, but behind closed doors, he's still pining away for someone to play opposite Terrell Owens.

This roster already includes T.O., Tank Johnson and Adam Jones. What's one more player with a few dings on his resume? You think I'm reaching on this one?

Well, I just talked to someone in Oxnard, Calif., site of Cowboys training training camp, and Smith's name has already come up in conversations. But something tells me we won't see this discussion on HBO's "Hard Knocks" on Wednesday.

I'll talk to Yasinskas and we'll get back to you soon.
Also, here's PFT's take:
In the wake of Friday’s troubling incident between receiver Steve Smith and cornerback Ken Lucas, the Panthers could be thinking about life without the talented-but-troubled wideout.

Matt Mosley of ESPN.com reports that there are “rumblings” out of Panthers camp that the team is fed up with Smith’s actions, and are at least considering the idea of trading him.

Mosley says that Smith has become a “divisive force” on the team: “One Panthers source said that several defensive backs were walking around after the recent incident saying that if management didn’t discipline Smith, they would.”

And Mosley, whose covers the NFC East for ESPN.com’s post-Hashmarks blog project, partially justifies his encroachment upon Pat Yasinskas’ NFC South turf by suggesting that the Cowboys could be Smith’s ultimate destination.

Other teams that would at least consider Smith include, in our view, the Eagles, Vikings, Bears, and Redskins.

Assuming that Smith wouldn’t want a new deal, his cap charge for 2008 is a very manageable $1.75 million. Because it’s after June 1, the Panthers wouldn’t take a cap hit for the move until 2009.

Smith currently is signed through 2012. His future salaries are $3.4 million 2009, $5.75 million in 2010, $7 million in 2011, and $7.75 million in 2012.

After seeing ESPN news and Smith's apology and related news - I am targeting this guy after he drops. I think he is truly sorry and will be dedicated to personally kicking some butt. This is the kind of personal kind of motivation that I am looking for. This guy is tremendously serious and I am going to stake a bunch on him this year - even sweeter, it will be at a discount. Yeah - I won't have him for the first three games, I can live with that. he will be chomping at the bit big time.

I don't think he's going anywhere. Dallas would do this deal in a second, but it doesn't make much sense for Carolina. He may be a pain, but he's also one of their best players.

Look at Philly. T.O's attitude got him a bus pass out of town (justifiably) but they've been looking for a wide receive ever since. (Goodbye T.O. - Hello Kevin Curtis! Blech.) Smith may be a pain, but he's no T.O. I'm sure Dallas will offer a lot (first round pick + other goodies) but in the end, I think Carolina would come up on the short end. They might vent a little, and leave it out there as a threat, but at the end of the day, they're a much better team with Smith.

Fun rumor though.

I would love for the Seahawks to trade for him.......unfortunately they only take guys w/out issues :lmao:
ya, like Jeremy Stevens...
ZINGGGG!
Not really. Stevens was drafted in 2002. Ruskell was hired in 2005.
And they knew about his problems when he was drafted. In fact anyone who was around the UW during Stevens time there knew what kind of guy he was. That was the old administration. Now they just trade for players like Branch (what a rip off).

You think he's more sorry this time than when he beat the hell out of another teammate last year?

Are you referring to Anthony Bright in 2002? If not, please provide details about this alleged incident last year...

I think you're agreeing with me, right?I graduated from the UW in 2001. Stevens was a known commodity.

If this happens, it kills Delhomme's value IMO. And it might hurt their running game too... I don't see many defenses getting too worried about Muhammad and Hackett. With Fox on the hot seat, it's hard for me to see this happening.

To be honest I couldn't remember the year of the other fight. I guess he gets a pass and it falls off his record after 5 years

They mortgaged the future in this year's draft. Getting rid of by far the best offensive player on the team in the same season would be surprising.

They won't trade him cheap, but if someone is willing to pay good value I can see them trading Smith.

Are these the same sources that have Peppers being traded and Favre coming to Charlotte? Ain't happening folks.

I don't think so either.Be very tough to get a decent return for Smith, for one thing. Draft picks? A first rounder? Not if I am Carolina. You have Smith signed to a pretty fair deal till 2012 or so, and I think Carolina thinks it may make some noise in the NFC. If Jon Stewart is a hit, and Delhomme stays healthy, they could really improve. Also, making trades of this magnitude this close to the season are tough. Doesn't happen very often.I think that trade rumors are a natural in this situation, but I also think it's a pretty heated time. If Lucas and Smith squash this thing, and Smith says the right things, which he has done, then this will go away. People need to cool down. The defensive backs were upset, so the team is gonna trade their best player? I'm not seeing it.I think the locker room thing is overblown. Wideouts and defensive backs, is it that important that they get along?Smith catches two TDs in game 1, and the forgiveness will flow.

Well, he's not playing in game one; or in game two. I assume you mean the first game back.:hurtingsmithownergladhedidn'tbreakhishand:

I don't see any way TO & SSmith co-exist with only 1 football. Neither guy seems to be a "share" kind of WR
TO would welcome Smith with open arms. Dear God, it would be like a Madden team out there with TO getting single coverage all year long. There would be plenty of footballs to go around, and if Romo knows how to do one thing, its keep his receivers happy. There is no way this happens, but its insane to think of a receiving corp of Smith and Crayton on the outside, TO in the slot, Witten at TE and Felix Jones coming out of the backfield to catch a few. How do you defend that?

Disagree. T.O. really seems to have changed his personality, and Smith would be a good soldier if they're winning.Owens + Smith + Witten.... :lmao: That's just silly.

Beat me to all of my points. :lmao:

From an NFL perspective, adding Smith to the Cowboys would be sick. From a fantasy perspective, I think it would hurt the current expected values of Smith, Owens, and Witten - not enough targets for all of them to maintain what they are used to, along with Barber and Jones. Romo might improve, but he's already projected as QB3 or QB4, and I don't see him bypassing Brady or Peyton.

Basically, everyone under the sun is "headed for Dallas." I really really question this rumor. Smith is the only identity the Panthers have.

Maybe I should start a thread about the Cowboys acquiring Moss and Wayne...it would have as much validity as this thread.

I'd project Romo as QB1 with TO, Smith & Witten as his top 3 targets. You just can't cover them all. It'd be sick, as noted.

Welcome to the Raider Nation Mr. Smith!!.......Big Al needs to let J.W. walk on out the door, and leave the $11M check at the door buddy, and make the trade to get Smith....Shoot, I'll give up next year's #1 for him if I were an owner looking to win right now.....

With one hell of a pass rush. just ask the Pats. (Moss, Welker, Stallworth, Gaffney, Faulk, Watson...)

this would be the dumbest move ever
why? The locker room is extremely important when a team is trying to win a championship and he clearly seems to have some problems within his locker room.
If the Panthers trade Steve Smith they are done for the season. If they don't trade Smith, and lose Delhomme or Smith to injury, they are done for the season. Smith is their most dynamic player on offense. He is essential for their success. Without Smith they end up with starting wideouts of Muhammed and DJ Hackett, ouch! They have a good line and a good running game, but all of that is contingent on having a passing threat. Without Smith they don't have much of one. I am a Bears fan. I would be thrilled if they could give up a first for Smith.

That seriousness and the lackadasial attitude of many players may be what got him in trouble. He'll get anger counseling, but what about the players sleeping through meetings?
