Panthers Wednesday injury report, WR Smith questionable

Panthers WR Steve Smith (hamstring) did a little running and catching Wednesday, but remains listed as questionable on the first injury report of the week. All his action came on the side, as he didn't practice fully.

It's interesting in that it's the first time he's come outside since his Week 1 injury.

SS Shaun Williams (foot) was down as doubtful, and stayed inside.

Among the questionable players, WR Drew Carter (finger) was the only one to practice, as C Justin Hartwig (groin), CB Ken Lucas (neck) and RB Nick Goings (thigh) were also held out.

LB Dan Morgan (concussion) is again listed as out.

The Tampa Tribune reports Panthers WR Steve Smith, who led the league in catches and receiving yardage in 2005, skipped the four preseason games with a strained left hamstring. Now he has missed the first two meaningful games with a strained right hamstring. Rumors are filtering out of Charlotte that Smith is healthy enough to play but is disgruntled with his contract situation. "Steve is a great football player - he proved that to everybody last year," HC John Fox said. "He's a guy we prefer to have out there, but the reality is he's not. When he's ready, he'll be in. Right now, he's not ready."

If that's true then it would have to be one of the weirdest ways to negotiate a contract ever.

Indeed. I do know this: my team would benefit from his return to the field.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -Steve Smith got closer to the practice field Wednesday.

The Carolina Panthers All-Pro receiver did agility drills and some light running on a separate field while his teammates practiced. He's listed as questionable for Sunday's game at Tampa Bay.

Smith, who missed the first two games after straining his right hamstring Sept. 5, was not seen during any practice last week.

``He's making progress,'' coach John Fox said. ``We'll take it one day at a time. It was good to have him out there today.''

The Panthers (0-2) have scored only one touchdown and 19 points without Smith, the league's top receiver last season.

Fox wouldn't speculate if Smith, who also caught some short passes on the side, will return against the Buccaneers.

``It's day to day. I'll talk to the trainers to see how it reacts after running around today,'' Fox said. ``We'll make that judgment as we move forward.''

Maybe I'm just a desperate SS owner, but this is great news. If he is running at all, it would seem that his meeting with Dr. Andrews went well and he is cleared to start practicing again. I'll probably sit him this week still no matter what, but I'm hopeful going forward.

On the status of wide receiver Steve Smith: He's making progress. We'll take it one day at a time. It was good to have him out here today.

On if Smith might practice this week: Again, it's day-to-day. I'll talk to the trainers to see how he reacts to that running around today and what it felt like. We'll make that judgment as we move forward.

On if Smith being at practice gives the team a boost: Sure. This game is about confidence. I think with him out there, there is more confidence. But the reality is he hasn't been out there, and I don't know if he will be out there this week. Either way, we're going to have to be ready to play.
