Multiple sources, including ESPN, are reporting that Bill Parcells will accept a high ranking position in the Falcons front office.
Personnel wise, John Abraham could again become a 3-4 OLB and Jamaal Anderson could work as a 3-4 end. I don't think either will have great value in those roles in standard systems. Keith Brooking was very productive as a 3-4 ILB, but that was in 2002 as part of the more aggressive Phillips 3-4 scheme. Michael Boley is probably where Karlos Dansby was this summer -- could play inside or outside, with interesting value in either role.
Obviously, we're speculating about things that may not happen (Parcells may not sign, he may not change the scheme immediately, plenty of player movement to come), but staying ahead of the pack is key for dynasty owners.
For those of you new to the IDP landscape, this is why the offseason can be every bit as interesting as the regular season in these leagues.
I'll hold off on creating our 2008 offseason coaching and scheme thread yet, but this could have some interesting ramifications for the Falcon defense. Parcells, who strongly favors a 3-4 defense, will apparently be in charge of hiring a coach and general manager. Current defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer worked reasonably well under Parcells, setting aside his favored (and current) 4-3 scheme after a season to acquire the appropriate personnel. It's unlikely he'd be back, but it's obviously too early to say. The rumors about Bill Cowher and Mike Singletary should grow still stronger; both have experience overseeing or coaching 3-4 schemes.Parcells told the newspaper that he will oversee the football operation but he has no plans to return to coaching.
"I'm going to oversee the football operation, Parcells told the Daily News. "I'm going to hire a general manager if the deal is finalized in Atlanta. We are going to hire a coach and talk to all the coaches who are there. It's going to be a collective effort. The triangle is going to be the GM, the coach and Bill Parcells. I'm also going to include Rich McKay if he wants to stay in the business.
