Packers | Vinatieri leaves town without an offer

Fri, 17 Mar 2006 22:34:42 -0800

Michael Felger, of the Boston Herald, reports free agent PK Adam Vinatieri (Patriots) left Green Bay Friday night, March 17, without a contract offer from the Green Bay Packers following a two-day visit. The prevailing wisdom was that the Packers were serious about offering Vinatieri a mega-deal; otherwise the visit would not have taken place. Vinatieri is likely looking for the largest deal ever given to a kicker, which would mean an annual salary well over $2 million per season and a signing bonus north of $3 million.

Dolphins | Team not pursuing Ashworth heavily

Fri, 17 Mar 2006 21:46:32 -0800

Jeff Darlington, of the Palm Beach Post, reports free agent OL Tom Ashworth (Patriots) will continue to seek other suitors as the Miami Dolphins have not pursued him since Wednesday, March 15. "There's plenty of talk, but not a deal," agent Tom Mills said about the Dolphins. "It'll probably be into Monday before we have something (with one of a number of teams.) The Dolphins have not been very aggressive, so I'm not sure they're a player."

McGinest statement

Former Patriots linebacker Willie McGinest released the following statement through his agent on Friday:

"I would like to thank the New England fans, players, media and organization for all of their support during my time with the Patriots. The last 12 years of my life have been nothing short of spectacular, and there will always be a special place in my heart for the Patriots. That being said, I am extremely excited about starting a new chapter of my life in Cleveland. To all of you in the New England area who have laughed, cried and celebrated with me and the Patriots over the past 12 years, thank you. I will always cherish those memories, and I will miss you."

The statement was signed by McGinest, with his No. 55 next to the signature.

Good bye, good luck and thanks for everything, Willie. :banned:

McGinest has always been one of the classiest athletes ever to play in the Boston area. I can't think of a single Patriots fan who thinks otherwise. Good luck Big Willie. You'll be missed but there will always be a place for you in New England once your playing career is over. You will always be a legend to all Pats fans.

Patriots | Roehl signed

Sat, 18 Mar 2006 19:06:19 -0800

The New England Patriots have signed free agent OL Jeff Roehl to a one-year contract with a base salary of $350,000 (2006).

Earning respect -- and his due

Richard Seymour is back home in South Carolina wondering, just like everyone else.

The Patriots' four-time Pro Bowl defensive end is wondering what the Patriots are doing, which hasn't been much, and he's wondering how, if at all, he fits into what they'll be doing. If they're doing anything.

As with most things the soft-spoken Seymour says, there is more thought behind his words than he lets on. As he spoke about the departure of Willie McGinest last week and the business side of the game, Seymour was asked if he'd thought about the possibility that the Patriots might try to protect their interests next year if a deal is not reached by franchising him as a defensive tackle -- a move that this year would have saved $2.676 million because of the cost difference between a defensive end ($8,332,000) and a defensive tackle ($5,656,000).

''I did the calculations," Seymour said. ''I played more defensive end snaps than defensive tackle snaps. I know where my snaps are at, but I would hope it doesn't come down to something like that.

''I'm optimistic at this point. Hopefully it will go ahead and work itself out. I think after last year they understand I'm serious. I'll go to the wall if I have to, but that's not my choice."

This sort of summed it up for me...

Should the Patriots have kept Givens?

JOHN STONE

Niantic, Conn.

As of now, my vote ''no" is in the minority. All teams have a salary cap and must manage within it. David Givens and Willie McGinest were both victims of the cap, as were Drew Bledsoe, Lawyer Milloy, Ty Law, etc. The immediate emotional reaction is one of sadness, as we like these guys. However, we have learned to like the new guys, too, and the product continues to be one of high quality. The Krafts are an excellent business family. They manage well and hire well. In Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli they have two of the best minds in football. As a team they are not afraid to make the tough decisions

* The Tampa Tribune reports that the Patriots have expressed an interest in free-agent receiver Marc Boerigter (Chiefs). The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Boerigter, a four-year veteran, has battled injuries the last two seasons. He has 39 career catches for 697 yards and eight touchdowns (all TDs in 2002).

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this... but if there are big Pats fans that would like to give their advice - it would be greatly appreciated...

I'm inquiring about Ben Watson's and Reche Caldwell's [DYNASTY] value...

I have just traded for Watson (I'm gambling on greatness) - as he seems to be unstoppable at times late last year... it seems to me that he could develop as a definite stud for year's to come... am I reading too much into this?

As for Caldwell, he's avaliable and cheap in my league... wondering if he's worth a late flyer / longshot pick?... since the Pats have always look for good matchups on sundays - and not many WRs have been studs (fantasy wise) lately because of this...

I think Watson could be something special...but remember he is on a team that spreads the ball around a lot. Also keep an eye on Daniel Graham...I think this is the last year of his contract. As for Caldwell....you need to wait and see who else gets signed (Moulds, K Johnson, etc). I put Caldwell in the same class as David Terrell, Andre Davis, and Donald Hayes when they signed. Potential but no real breakout, although I think Andre Davis could have developed into a good #2 or #3.

Funny that Caldwell's only TD last year was a 28-yard touchdown catch against the Patriots at Gillette Stadium! :D

I suspect the Pats will end up signing/trading for at least two more better options at WR than Caldwell to go along with Branch. As you mentioned, they spread the ball around a lot in the passing game. I think he will put up numbers similar to what he's done in the past and similar to what Tim Dwight produced for the Pats last year. Unless your league has a ton of teams and plays a lot of WR each week, I would not make a big push to acquire him unless he comes dirt cheap and you have extra roster space.

IIRC They've looked at him before

Interesting article in the Providence Journal:

Success supports Patriots' decisions

An excerpt:

The New England Patriots have won three Super Bowls in the last five years. They've made the playoffs four of the last five years. They've won three straight AFC East titles, and four in five seasons.

That record would seem to speak eloquently, and emphatically, for itself. Yet some people, upset by the departures of veteran free agents David Givens and Willie McGinest, and concerned that popular kicker Adam Vinatieri might follow those two out of town, are wondering if the Patriots know what they're doing.

San Diego Chargers general manager A.J. Smith, who grew up in Cranston, and began his career in pro football as a part-time film grader for the Pats more than 25 years ago, isn't one of those people.

"I study other organizations," he said last week, "to see how they do business. It's interesting to see the ones who'll stick to their guns. If you overpay players, of course they'll sign with you. But you have to draw a line in the sand. That's why I admire the Patriots."

Others are questioning the Patriots for allowing Givens and McGinest to sign with other clubs.

McGinest, who has been with New England since he was taken with the fourth pick overall in the 1994 draft, and who holds the NFL career record for postseason sacks, with 16, received close to a $6-million bonus to sign with Cleveland. The Browns are coached by Romeo Crennel, who was defensive coordinator in all three of the Pats' Super Bowl victories.

Givens, a seventh-round draft pick out of Notre Dame in 2002, was the Patriots' leading receiver in 2004, with a 56 catches for 874 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was second on the team last year with a career-high 59 receptions for 738 yards and 2 TDs, and his seven postseason TD catches are a club record. Considered the club's No. 2 receiver, behind Super Bowl XXXIX MVP Deion Branch, Givens signed with the Titans, where he received a signing bonus of $8 million and is expected to be the team's primary receiver.

The bonuses, which are guaranteed, and overall deals -- 5 years, $24 million for Givens; 3 years, $12 million for McGinest -- are too high in both cases. McGinest is 34 years old. Givens is being paid like a No. 1 receiver, which he wouldn't be in New England. The financially disciplined Patriots were wise not to match those contracts.

"If somebody was going to pay those players that kind of money," Smith said, "they were smart to grab it.

"It's a business. Teams and players have to make hard decisions all the time. We would love to keep all our guys. I wish we could fit them all in under the (salary) cap and have them retire here. But that's not possible. It's sad, but there's no way it can be done.

"It hurts sometimes when players who helped you win sign with other teams. But you must put a dollar-sign value next to each player and stick to it."

Scott Pioli, New England's VP of player personnel, and coach Bill Belichick have done a superb job in recent years of evaluating what each player is worth to the Patriots, and of determining how they can put together the best possible team under the salary cap.

"It's a painful situation to be in," said Smith, "but when Scott and Bill are telling you about players, you know they're right."

:goodposting: I think most Patriot fans understand the economic side, but it still hurts to see the caliber of player go somewhere else. I think if the Patriots try to deal with the players before it gets to FA then they could still have these players. Other teams seemed to be creative when it comes to the Cap, and you have to figure it would be better to keep pieces of your team that already know the system and what you expect.

*My only issue is that by waiting until free agency than the team loses their hand. Patriot players have titles on their resume which usually means teams will overpay for that experience. So, the question is did the Pats simply want these guys to walk or did they miscalculate with the new CBA (i.e. more money for teams to throw around)?*I have no problem letting players walk...as long as their replacements keep the team at it's current level. There's two issues with letting players walk and until the second one is addressed (i.e. who's the replacement) you don't know if the strategy was wise. The first issue is not overpaying for current players and they were wise in this area.

*The Pats are as creative with cap as any team in the NFL. To win three titles and not go into cap hell is an incredible accomplishment. They always spend right to the limit but don't get themselves in trouble for the future. They don't give out the silly contracts but usually build a very healthy middle class which tends to give them very solid depth. Yet, the dynamic of the team is changing a little as some of the younger players are becoming "star" players and will look to be paid accordingly. That means the draft becomes even more important.

*It's so difficult to really comment on the Pats right now. Until we see how they use this cap space and what their roster looks like after the draft and free agency any comments (good or bad) are being made without the full amount of information. It's pretty much wait and see time or as we say around here..."in Bill we trust."

More About Caldwell...

Caldwell signed to bolster receiving corps

Reche Caldwell isn’t a Pro Bowl receiver and the Patriots aren’t going to pretend he is. However, if New England were to sign someone like an Eric Moulds or Keyshawn Johnson, Caldwell would become a very dangerous third receiver for the Patriots. Even if he’s the Patriots No. 2 receiver when the season begins, Caldwell could be a pleasant surprise. It’s shocking how much better a great quarterback like Brady can make a decent receiver look. Perhaps when the 2006 season is over with, Caldwell and Givens will both be examples of that.

Mon, 20 Mar 2006 20:59:29 -0800

Roy Cummings, of the Tampa Tribune, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will likely lose out on free agent OT Tom Ashworth (Patriots). Ashworth's agent, Tom Mills, said the team's contract offer is not what they are looking for. Mills said, "His visit there [last week] went great and they're telling us he's better than both of the starters they have there now, but they're not saying that with their offer. It's a multiyear offer, but it's at backup rates."

More on Stephen Neal

* Keeping track of the whereabouts of players with Patriots ties, offensive guard Stephen Neal was planning to visit the Texans, offensive tackle Tom Ashworth visited the Seahawks on Monday, and receiver Tim Dwight followed up a weekend trip to the Jets by meeting with the Steelers, according to his agent, Jack Bechta. Dwight could also visit the Seahawks this week if he doesn't sign a contract with another club beforehand.

Lost Poole to Oakland
Who will play his 3 snaps next season?
likely a fair point, I think he's played 6 games the last two years. However, I was under the impression he really caught on to BBs system and was just awesome with the young CBs. "We" had a slew of CBs the last two years, I wonder if "behind the scenes" he was extremely valuable and will be missed.

From Patriot Blogs...nice rundown.

When the 2005 season ended, the Patriots had 17 players scheduled for unrestricted free agency. A look at how things have unfolded:

Offensive tackle Tom Ashworth -- Took free-agent visits to the Jets, Buccaneers and Dolphins, and was also speaking with the Texans, Seahawks and Saints late last week. Still a possibility to return to New England.

Receiver Troy Brown -- Has drawn interest from the Jets, but has yet to sign a contract. Still mulling his options, which include re-signing with the Patriots, retiring, or signing with another club.

Linebacker Matt Chatham -- Signed a three-year contract with the Jets. Agent Paul Sheehy said the deal will pay Chatham as a starter should he fulfill that role.

Receiver Andre' Davis -- Signed a one-year deal with the Bills. The contract was for $1.3 million and included a $500,000 signing bonus.

Linebacker/safety Don Davis -- Re-signed with the Patriots, for one year ($770,000), before free agency began. The contract includes a $25,000 signing bonus.

Receiver Tim Dwight -- Has drawn interest from teams seeking a boost in the punt return game, visiting with the Jaguars and Jets. He plans to meet with the Seahawks this week. Agent Jack Bechta said the door remains open for Dwight to return to the Patriots.

Running back Heath Evans -- Has yet to sign with a team.

Tight end Christian Fauria -- Signed a two-year, $2 million contract with the Redskins that has base salaries of $810,000 in 2006 and $1 million in 2007, with a reported $190,000 signing bonus.

Quarterback Doug Flutie -- As of late last week, he was unsure of his next career step. If the Patriots are interested in having him back, it will be tough to walk away. Like Troy Brown, retirement is an option.

Receiver David Givens -- Signed a five-year, $24 million contract with the Titans. Also visited the Dolphins and Texans. The Patriots were also in the mix to re-sign him.

Safety Artrell Hawkins -- Re-signed with the Patriots for two years. The deal totaled $1.53 million, with base salaries of $710,000 in 2006 and $670,000 in 2007, and a signing bonus of $150,000.

Offensive guard Stephen Neal -- Has visited the Vikings and Bills in free agency. Has yet to sign with a team.

Cornerback Hank Poteat -- Re-signed with the Patriots for one-year ($585,000). The deal doesn't include a signing bonus.

Cornerback Chad Scott -- Has yet to sign with a team.

Safety Michael Stone -- Had been offered a contract by the Patriots but said he is exploring other free-agent options.

Offensive lineman Ross Tucker -- Re-signed with the Patriots for one year ($585,000). The deal doesn't include a signing bonus.

Kicker Adam Vinatieri -- Visited the Packers. The Patriots are still in the mix to re-sign him. Other teams who could potentially be active in the kicker market include Atlanta, Dallas, Indianapolis and Miami (if Olindo Mare is cut).

Salary cap cuts:

Linebacker Chad Brown -- Has yet to sign with another team.

Outside linebacker Willie McGinest -- Signed 3-year, $12 million contract with the Browns.

Cornerback Tyrone Poole -- Took first free-agent visit with Falcons late last week. ESPN.com reported on Monday that Poole has signed a two-year deal with the Raiders.

Signings:

Receiver Reche Caldwell -- Inked a two-year deal for slightly more than $2 million. Base salaries of $585,000 in 2006 and $1 million in 2007. There was no signing bonus, a $300,000 roster bonus in 2006 (due date unknown), a $20,000 workout bonus in 2006, and a $100,000 workout bonus in 2007.

thanks for all the info/effort you put into this thread NE
Thanks Bri...tough to get any scoops being here in PA now instead of MA. Patriots.com was never good about having current info since they get it from Boston.com and bostonherald.com. They just ususally add a link to those existing sources. I like keeping the thread up to date so we can look back at it and see how things turn out.I am waiting to see who the Pats go after for WR...heard there are no talks going on with Keyshawn even with the Coach BB connection. I really am hoping they can bring in Eric Moulds somehow. I think he will be a good fit with Brady and company.

There is and there isn't. Just saw something last night, apparently those two still keep in touch so I guess it's that there's been no "official" talks but yet they have talked. My computer shut down unexpectedly so it's not in my "history" sorry can't give ya a link. I'll see if I can find one

Patriots Draft: Top DB visits Foxborough

By Patriots Insider Staff

Date: Mar 20, 2006

The Patriots are serious about upgrading their roster through the NFL Draft in April. That has become evident even to the casual reader of Patriots Insider. With all the news of scouting trips and personal interviews pouring in, we're starting to get more Patriots specific information. The latest piece of news is from an Insider conversation with a top ranked DB who says, the only team he’s worked out for is New England at this point. Hmmm...

WHo??? :D LOL

Don't know if this is good news or not....

Sources: Vinatieri switches agents

By Nick Cafardo, Globe Staff | March 21, 2006

League sources indicated today that Adam Vinatieri has chosen Henderson, Nev., based Gary Uberstine to be his new agent, though the move will not be official for a few days.

The free-agent kicker has ended his long-time association with the Neil Cornrich firm after slow-going in the free-agent market to this point. With Cornrich suspended for a year by the National Football League's Players Association, Vinatieri has been represented by Jonathan Hurst of the Cornrich firm. The move to Uberstine will become official when the proper paperwork is filed with the NFLPA. There's also a three-day waiting period before the new agent can assume negotiations so Vinatieri's talks could be on hold until the end of the week or into next week.

Uberstine has represented several Patriots in the past.

He recently negotiated a huge deal for Willie McGinest with the Cleveland Browns, netting him $6 million in guarantees and bonuses and $12 million over three years. Uberstine also represents Troy Brown, who is being courted by the New York Jets. Both players recommended Uberstine to Vinatieri.

Vinatieri currently has two known suitors -- the Green Bay Packers and the New England Patriots. The Packers visited with Vinatieri last week and would like to sign the kicker soon. The Patriots had their initial offer to Vinatieri rejected. The Dallas Cowboys could become a player with Vinatieri's strong ties to Bill Parcells and Drew Bledsoe.

NOT Happy at all about this one!!!!

Eyes on Adam

Sports radio 850 WEEI in Boston reported that kicker Adam Vinatieri has reached an agreement in principle to join the Indianapolis Colts. ESPN has confirmed the agreement in principle.

Sorry, but this is one signing I did not want to go this way. I don't doubt what Coach BB is doing, but I don't have to like seeing my favorites go to other teams.

I am not impressed with the kickers that are left. Mike Vanderjagt is a great kicker, but does most of his kicking in a dome...not sure how that would turn out for the Pats.

Paul Endinger did not impress me enough to think he will be a great kicker in NE. Longwell probably had the best tools to be a match for NE...but he was not an option with such a quick signing.

Better get my Adam V patriot shirt while they go on sale! :X

Fans getting restless

The first week of free agency featured many more goings than comings for the Patriots and that didn't sit too well with the Nation. Not surprisingly, this week's mailbag was full of fans wondering what is going on in Foxborough with a few pleas for patience sprinkled in. The breakdown was about 80-20 in terms of negative to positive, but I tried to give each side a chance to offer its views. As is usually the case with issues of this nature, the truth probably lies somewhere in between.

While they will probably help I can't say I'm too excited about guys like Keyshawn and Vandy. They've both been dopes in the past. The Pats have had minimal idiots during this run which is a bonus in the fan department. Guys lile Key and Vandy just aren't the easiest guys to root for.

I think fans would have an easier time with someone like Eric Moulds than Keyshawn Johnson. I could force myself to cheer for Vandy since he is my dynasty league kicker. :P

Let's just say there is mutual interest." As for potentially making the switch from indoors to the northeast, Vanderjagt's agent said his client would welcome the chilly climate. "People forget that Mike kicked for two years in Canada," said Scott, referring to the Canadian Football League. Scott says Vanderjagt's list of possible teams next season is New England, the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys.

Tue, 21 Mar 2006 21:27:01 -0800

Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports according to a source familiar with the agreement, free agent PK Adam Vinatieri (Patriots) received a five-year deal from the Indianapolis Colts that was worth $7.5 million over the first three years, $9.6 million over the first four, and included a $3.5 million signing bonus. By most accounts it is the richest deal ever for a kicker.

Kick in the teeth for Patriots

Vinatieri has said that he longed for an opportunity to kick in either a warm-weather climate or a dome. He has a home in Celebration, Fla., but no Florida team was interested in him.

Vinatieri, who last season surpassed Gino Cappelletti to become the Patriots' all-time leading scorer, has scored 100 or more points in 10 seasons. In 2005, he hit on 20 of 25 field goal attempts. All told, he was 263 of 321 with the Patriots.

The Packers appeared to be front-runners for Vinatieri and were prepared to make him the highest-paid kicker after allowing their own free agent, Ryan Longwell, to sign a four-year, $8 million deal with a $3 million bonus with the Vikings. But the Packers never got a chance to match or trump Indianapolis's offer, nor apparently did the Patriots.

I think the Players are getting tired of how BB negotiates and are sending him a message...

Good Luck Adam...
