Pat Thomas to start at MLB?..... (1 Viewer)

Now this is new info. :boxing: Thank you.

Not much to go one about Thomas. 3 years of mainly special teams.

Always an OLB. Played primarily Strong side in college at NCState. 240lbs. Only 25 years old.

I have heard/read that Demorrio Williams has actually played well (making noticeable plays) and taken a few snaps at the MLB as well. He appears undersized for it though.

Seems to be a hint to Nap Harris.

I was actually going to post this myself but in a thread I'd title "Deep Sleepers." I don't see Thomas "beating out" Harris yet, and there's some mild politics involved. But Harris is a very average LB and I think the Chiefs would rather see if they have anything in Thomas, whom they like. If not, add MLB to the list of needs for the 2009 offseason.

Definitely worth keeping an eye open for and shouldn't be dismissed.

 This may end up being Herm sending a message to Harris. Ideally I believe they want to keep the linebackers the same as last year, but with Harris performing better. This may be do or die for Harris here.I'm reading the Demorrio signing as more of a long term move now. Edwards is older. I think he's at least 35. Harris hasn't showed anything to speak of. So having him around as a safety net for this year and a starter for next makes sense to me.In any regard now is the time to see if you have a player in Thomas. You have nothing to lose.

Pat Thomas was in teh same position in JAX two years ago, lots os sparks but when it came down to it he was not talented enough to hold a starting role. And after they drafted Durant, not even a spot on the team.

It was a talent issue? He was only 22/23 at the time.

Q&A with Herm Edwards

Q: Lot of movement at middle linebacker. What’s going on over there?

EDWARDS: “How about that. Competing, competing. I said that in the spring and there is going to be movement there. We want guys to do it right and it’s going to be very competitive there. We’re going to get some good players.”

Q: Can you define right?

EDWARDS: “Proper gap fits, proper entry on those gaps. Gun (Cunningham) is a big stickler and I’m a big stickler too. When you play a one-gap defense it’s very, very important that your gap responsibility is taken care of. If not, there is going to be a big, a big play. When you get into those eight-man fronts you shouldn’t have gaping runs. Sometimes guys don’t get focused or get cut off and there is a lot of responsibility on linebackers. They get confused and we’re trying to fight through that. It’s not unusual.”

Sounds like he is trying to send a message to me.

Sorry if I'm being dense here, but what does his age have to do with talent?

Q: It seems like Gunther is trying to figure out who his starting middle linebacker is? He’s had Napoleon Harris, Demorrio Williams and Pat Thomas. What’s going on?

EDWARDS: “He’s going to keep coaching them and the great thing about it we’ve got four games to find out. We said all along that the players who do it correctly are the guys who are going to play.”
I am a big fan of what the Chiefs are doing. Harris is not going to get the job by default. I don't think they'll think twice about cutting him if he sucks in pre-season.

I was thinking that him not starting at age 22/23 may not be solely because he had no talent.Things can change alot in 3 years when you are in your young 20s. Especially if his issues werent primarily physical.

He was good enough to be drafted by an NFL team in the 6th round, stay in the NFL for 3 years and start 3 years at NCState.

Obviously, some modestly talented UDFA players can improve (I saw that happen with Antonio Pierce in Washington through no less than 3 coaching regimes), but you'd think that if he was improving the Jags would have held onto him, especially with a former LB as their head coach in Del Rio. If that's what's happened to Thomas, then he's a great bargain pickup.

Maybe his lack of talent is being over matched by Harris' lack of defensive responsibility comprehension?

More likely Borbely is right and Edwards is challenging the guys to improve. I doubt Thomas keeps the job. Don't they scrimmage with the Vikings this weekend.

This usually is good. Last year they blitzed Tavaris Jackson a lot. How they line up should tell us more.

It's so funny to me that the Redskins were absolutely raked across the coals for charging for fans to attend practices eight years ago, but now it's commonplace.

No kidding. I took my son to Packer camp in 92 and there only a few fans. Now it, the draft and the combine are huge.
